Campground ★4.0

Preston, ID 83263, USA

4.0
Nice spot to camp for cheap. This is a dry campground, no water, no electricity, no trash services. There are pit toilets that were nice and clean, minimal odor, but bring your own toilet paper because the five rolls they put in there don't last long.We were there in mid-July and it was hotter than expected. The nights didn't really cool off as much as usual in the mountains near water and the heat set in by 9am. Luckily several of the camping spots have decent shade, which helps some. Any river access areas are full sun though, so bring your shades and your sunscreen. The river is fun, but wear your life jackets. A couple of members in our group had some scary moments and we were so grateful for the life jackets. We have floated this river many, many times and had gotten a bit complacent. Luckily this time the people who needed them, had them on and others floating the river jumped in to help during the critical moments. Faith in humanity=restored. We would hesitate to return for the camping, at least at this time of year because the mosquitoes were SO bad. We have never encountered mosquitoes that flew right through every attempt at keeping them back. Thermacells, citronella everything, bug spray, nothing phased those suckers and we all were eaten alive! Everyone left with dozens of bites and some of the kids literally looked like they had chicken pox. There is a playground listed in the description. It is a large sandbox and a horse shoe pit. Our youngest kids found the sandbox surprisingly fun. There is a small dock that you can fish from and enjoy watching the river. Someone has also built a small pond using rocks that is about knee deep for an adult (maybe river depth dependant?) That was a lot of fun for the kids too and wasn't full of moss and algae like the natural cove several yards away.Overall the campground was nice for the price. Close to the road which was busy during peak float hours, but quiet during evening/night, so not really an issue. Pack in plenty of ice and water, toilet paper and big spray and have a plan for packing out your trash! - Chris Nielson
