Nestled along the picturesque Dolores River, this highly-regarded campground provides a serene and well-appointed base for exploring some of the most iconic landscapes and attractions our state boasts.
Priest Gulch Campground & RV is more than just a place to park your rig or pitch your tent; it’s a meticulously maintained oasis that has garnered a reputation for its cleanliness, friendly atmosphere, and stunning natural surroundings. Whether you're a seasoned RVer, a family with young adventurers, or simply seeking a peaceful retreat by the river, this campground caters to a variety of outdoor preferences. Its dedication to providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience makes it a standout choice for anyone looking to embrace the Colorado outdoor lifestyle.
Priest Gulch Campground & RV is conveniently located at 27646 CO-145, Dolores, CO 81323, USA. This prime address places it squarely within the breathtaking San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado, offering a truly immersive mountain experience. Its position along Highway 145, specifically between mile markers 35 and 36, makes it easily accessible for travelers approaching from various directions within Colorado.
One of the most significant advantages of this campground's location is its strategic midway point between two of Colorado's premier destinations: the charming mountain town of Telluride and the historically rich Mesa Verde National Park. This means you can spend one day exploring the vibrant cultural scene and majestic peaks of Telluride and the next delving into the ancient Pueblo cliff dwellings of Mesa Verde, all within a reasonable drive. This makes Priest Gulch an exceptional basecamp for diverse Colorado adventures.
The setting itself is a major draw. The campground is situated directly on the Dolores River, providing beautiful riverfront sites and the soothing sound of flowing water. Surrounded by mature trees, it offers ample shade and a true sense of being "tucked away" in nature. While some sites are located closer to the main road, leading to some occasional road noise as noted by a past visitor, many highly recommend aiming for the spots across the river for an even more tranquil experience. The overall layout is well-designed, ensuring a pleasant stay despite potential proximity to the highway. The natural beauty of the area is further complemented by its adjacency to the San Juan National Forest, opening up a world of hiking, fishing, and exploration right outside the campground's boundaries.
Full Hookup RV Sites: The campground offers 88 RV sites, most of which include full hookups with 30/50 amp electric service, water, and sewer, catering to a wide range of RV sizes (up to 45 ft max RV length).
Tent Sites: For traditional campers, Priest Gulch provides several dedicated tent sites, many located right next to the Dolores River, offering a more rustic but equally beautiful camping experience.

Laundry Facilities: On-site laundry facilities are available, adding convenience for longer stays.
Camp Store and Gift Shop: The campground office includes a convenience store and gift shop, offering essentials, supplies, and souvenirs, so you don't have to leave the park for forgotten items.
Free Firewood: A delightful perk, free firewood is often provided, enhancing the classic campfire experience (subject to local fire bans due to low snowpack/lack of moisture, with propane fire rings and grills being allowed as alternatives).
Wi-Fi Access: Wi-Fi is available, though some guests note it can be spotty, which is often the case in beautiful, remote locations. It's generally sufficient for basic connectivity.
Propane Sales: Propane is available on-site for refills.
Pet Friendly: The campground welcomes pets, making it a great option for those who travel with their furry companions (call for any specific restrictions/fees).
Beautiful Dolores River Frontage: A standout feature is the campground's location directly on the Dolores River, offering stunning river views from many sites and the soothing sounds of the water. Many visitors specifically recommend requesting a riverfront site.
Well-Maintained and Clean Grounds: Reviewers consistently commend the property for being "immaculately maintained," "clean," and "well-manicured." The owners and staff are frequently described as friendly, helpful, and attentive.
Proximity to Major Attractions: Its ideal location midway between Telluride and Mesa Verde National Park makes it an excellent central hub for exploring the diverse landscapes and cultural sites of Southwest Colorado.
Family-Friendly Atmosphere: The presence of a playground and the overall welcoming environment, along with activities like playing in the river, make it suitable for families. While some reviews suggest it might appeal more to an "older crowd," families with young children have also found it very enjoyable.
Scenic Environment with Mature Trees: The abundance of old trees provides ample shade, contributing to a comfortable and picturesque camping environment throughout the day.
Strict Quiet Hours: The campground enforces a 10 PM "lights out" and quiet hours policy, which is appreciated by those seeking a peaceful night's rest. While it can be quite dark for walking dogs, this policy ensures a serene atmosphere for all campers.
Homemade Cinnamon Rolls: A unique and highly praised highlight mentioned by recent visitors is the availability of delicious homemade cinnamon rolls for purchase on Saturday mornings – a sweet start to a Colorado weekend!

Priest Gulch Campground & RV Reviews
Great campground, clean very nice… people were nice. That being said I gave it 4 because our spot was right off the main road. So somewhat noisy with cars/trucks going by. They have spots across the river aim for them. This campground has a 10p lights out. It’s dark…. Walking the dogs in total darkness is pretty bad. Now these things are not a surprise, it’s in the FAQ. It’s not a complaint as much as a FYI for anyone coming. We had young kids and I kinda get the vide it’s an older crowd here.
Jul 07, 2025 · R NewBeautiful campground, well laid out, friendly people. I've driven past for years and looked at it longingly- finally got to stop and stay awhile!
Jun 17, 2025 · MM PartainBeautifully landscaped campground. We had a site across the river against the mountain. Best sites are definitely on the river. Staff is very friendly. Saturday morning delicious homemade cinnamon rolls are available. Laundry is only available Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from noon until 4:00. There was a line forming at 11:30. We ended up driving 25 miles to Dolores to do our laundry. Although this is a lovely, quiet campground, we probably would not stay again unless we could get a river site.
Aug 23, 2024 · Lisa SteinmeyerSuch a wonderful and peaceful campground! We had such a great time here. It was very quiet and everyone was so friendly. We plan on making a yearly trek because of how much we enjoyed our stay. Get an rv spot along the river they are amazing!
Jul 11, 2024 · Vanessa KingThis is a beautiful campground right along the river and we have come here many times. However, they no longer allow campfires and that, to us, is a major part of camping. I don’t think it’s necessary to offer free wood. That’s a lot of work for the campground, but those that are experience campers are happy to bring their own or buy their own. Unfortunately, due to that change in policy, we will not be back
