Prewitt Ridge Campground

Big Sur, CA 93920, USA

3.0
Good spot, once you get off highway one expect 25 mins uphill followed by another 20-25 mins rough dirt road, the end you will see a huge steep downhill with huge holes which is bad. I barely made it with my stander height 2 wheel drive FJ cruiser(I know), but I also never off-road so.Decent high clearance I think is very necessary.(only if you wanna make it to the very end)Flies are annoying but no big deal once it gets dark. So yeah, rough drive but the view is amazing👍 - patrick xia

Prewitt Ridge Campground Introduce

For Californians with an adventurous spirit and a penchant for breathtaking vistas, Prewitt Ridge Campground in Big Sur offers an unparalleled, albeit challenging, outdoor experience. This isn't a typical family campground with paved roads and plentiful amenities; it's a raw, dispersed camping area where the journey is as much a part of the adventure as the destination. If you're an experienced driver with a capable vehicle and a desire to earn some of the most spectacular views Big Sur has to offer, then Prewitt Ridge is an essential addition to your California outdoor bucket list.

Prewitt Ridge is renowned for its sweeping, panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the dramatic Big Sur coastline. Imagine setting up camp high above the fog line, with the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out before you, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues, and the Milky Way blazing overhead at night. This is the promise of Prewitt Ridge. The effort required to reach this elevated sanctuary is richly rewarded by an unforgettable visual feast that truly captures the essence of California's iconic coastline.

The emphasis here is on self-sufficiency and embracing a minimalist approach to camping. There are no services – no water, no garbage, and no bathrooms – meaning you must pack in everything you need and pack out everything you bring, including all waste. This commitment to Leave No Trace principles ensures the continued pristine condition of this incredible natural treasure. While the drive can be intimidating for some, the payoff of having a whole view to yourself, or sharing it with just a few like-minded adventurers, is what makes Prewitt Ridge a truly sought-after destination for those who are up to the challenge.

Prewitt Ridge Campground is located in Big Sur, CA 93920, USA, high above the Pacific Ocean within the Los Padres National Forest. Its exact location is more defined by its access roads off Highway 1 than a specific street address. It sits on a ridge offering expansive views of the coastline, making it a highly coveted spot for dispersed camping.

Accessibility to Prewitt Ridge is perhaps its most defining characteristic and a crucial factor for potential visitors. After turning off Highway 1, expect a significant drive that is both uphill and features rough, unpaved terrain. Reviewers consistently describe the journey as approximately "25 mins uphill followed by another 20-25 mins rough dirt road." The road culminates in a "huge steep downhill with huge holes," making vehicle choice paramount.

While some have successfully navigated the road with 2-wheel drive (2WD) trucks or SUVs (like a standard height FJ Cruiser or a 2015 GMC Canyon 2WD truck), a vehicle with high clearance is considered "very necessary." It's strongly advised against attempting the drive in a standard 2WD vehicle that sits low to the ground due to the "large dips that appear in the path." Terrain tires and a lifted vehicle will certainly help mitigate the challenges. The path is largely a single lane with tight corners, requiring "inexperienced drivers" to exercise extreme caution or consider an alternative. There is no cell service once you embark on the dirt road, reinforcing the need for preparation and self-reliance. Always check current road conditions with the Monterey Ranger District before attempting the drive, especially after adverse weather, as conditions can change rapidly. This challenging access ensures that Prewitt Ridge remains a secluded and breathtaking reward for those prepared for the journey.

Services Offered:

  • Dispersed camping; no designated sites or fees.
  • No potable water source; campers must bring all their own water (e.g., 8 gallons for 2 people, 2 nights recommended).
