Ponderosa Campground

Co Rd 721, Gunnison, CO 81230, USA

3.0
This is a forest service campground with 29 sites. The fee is $16. There is no electric hookup. There are vault toilets and potable water from a tank filled by a solar pump. The campground is near a branch of the Blue Mesa reservoir, with the campground road leading to the boat ramp (closed for the season) and a beach. There are sites suitable for pull-ins, as well as walk-in tent sites. There are other campgrounds north along 721 and numerous dispersed camping sites (free!).It's a beautiful area, so I wish there had been more hiking opportunities. The trails we tried were poorly marked with really no signage. But there are other trails that seem more official (shown on the area maps) that we didn't have time to get to.Overall, a great place to camp on our road trip. - Isaac T

Ponderosa Campground Introduce

For Coloradans who truly value getting away from it all and immersing themselves in the raw, natural beauty of our state, Ponderosa Campground near Gunnison offers a compelling and authentic camping experience. Situated within the vast expanse of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, this Forest Service campground is a testament to the rugged charm of Colorado's high country. It's not a resort, nor does it pretend to be; instead, it provides a straightforward, peaceful, and incredibly scenic basecamp for exploring the wonders of Blue Mesa Reservoir and the surrounding wilderness. Imagine spending your days with incredible views, the quiet hum of nature as your soundtrack, and your evenings under a blanket of stars, completely disconnected from the digital world.

Ponderosa Campground caters specifically to those Coloradans who prefer a more rustic approach to their outdoor adventures. With a modest fee and no electric hookups, it's designed for campers who are self-sufficient and appreciate the simplicity of a traditional camping trip. The focus here is on the natural surroundings – the majestic views, the proximity to the reservoir, and the quiet solitude. While cell service is non-existent, many locals will find this to be a welcome feature, providing a rare opportunity to truly unplug and rejuvenate. It's a place where the grandeur of Colorado's landscapes takes center stage, inviting you to create your own adventure, whether it's by the water, on a trail, or simply by your campfire. Ponderosa Campground offers an ideal escape for those seeking peace, affordability, and genuine outdoor immersion right here in our home state.

Ponderosa Campground is located at Co Rd 721, Gunnison, CO 81230, USA. This places it within the Curecanti National Recreation Area, a vast and stunning natural expanse centered around Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado's largest body of water. The campground is situated near a branch of the Blue Mesa Reservoir, specifically at the northwest end of the Soap Creek Arm. This location offers easy access to the water, making it a prime spot for those interested in water-based activities when water levels permit.

Access to Ponderosa Campground involves navigating County Road 721 (also known as Soap Creek Road). While generally manageable, it's important to note that during dry conditions, the first 7 miles of Soap Creek Road are passable to trailers and RVs. However, heavy rain can make this road hazardous or even impassable. Therefore, checking road conditions, especially during or after wet weather, is highly advisable before you depart. The campground road itself leads directly to a boat ramp (though this may be closed seasonally or due to low water levels) and a beach area, providing convenient access to the reservoir's edge.

While Ponderosa Campground offers a secluded feel, it is part of a larger network of camping options in the area. There are other campgrounds further north along 721, and for those on a budget or seeking even more solitude, numerous free dispersed camping sites can be found just a mile past Ponderosa, near the creek. This variety in accessibility and proximity to other camping styles allows Coloradans to choose the adventure that best suits their preferences.

Ponderosa Campground, as a Forest Service campground, provides essential amenities designed for a straightforward and rustic camping experience, focusing on functionality within a natural setting. While it doesn't offer luxury, its services are well-maintained and cater to the fundamental needs of campers.

  • 29 Designated Campsites: The campground features 29 individual sites, suitable for both pull-in RVs (up to approximately 35 feet) and walk-in tent sites, offering flexibility for different camping setups.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for outdoor dining and a fire ring or grill for campfires (subject to local fire restrictions, which are common in Colorado).
  • Vault Toilets: Clean and well-maintained vault toilets are available within the campground area, providing basic restroom facilities. Reviews highlight their cleanliness, which is a significant plus for this type of amenity.
  • Potable Water: Potable (drinkable) water is available from a tank, which is filled by a solar pump. This provides a reliable source of water for campers, though users should be mindful of its source. Note that water availability can be seasonal or affected by conditions, so it's wise to check current conditions.
  • Garbage and Recycle Cans: Designated bins for garbage and recycling are available within the campground, encouraging campers to maintain a clean environment and properly dispose of their waste.
  • Bear-Proof Lockers: Given its forest setting, bear-proof food storage lockers are often provided at such campgrounds to protect both campers' food and local wildlife.
  • Horse Corral and Boat Ramp: The campground includes a horse corral for equestrian campers and a boat ramp for direct access to Blue Mesa Reservoir (though the ramp may be closed seasonally or due to low water levels).

It is important to remember that there are no electric hookups at Ponderosa Campground, aligning with its rustic, off-grid appeal.
