Such a fun experience. A 3 mile hike in (my first time EVER backpacking), took about an hour and a half to get there with the ups and downs of the trail. You can certainly do it as an inexperienced backpacker, just be prepared for a few small inclines there and back. Gorgeous scenery, and the lake is so serene. It wasn't too busy on Memorial weekend but busier than I expected. Lake was cold but I got in twice! Bear country so bring your bear spray and/or other protection AND LOTS OF BUG SPRAY! You can have your dog off leash in most areas just be sure they don't stray far as other people most likely are in the area. Plenty of spaces to camp, and trails lead further north to more hiking and camping! - Hope F

Location and Accessibility

Plowboy Campground is beautifully situated near Coolin, ID 83821, a location that places it in the highly sought-after Priest Lake region of Northern Idaho. What makes Plowboy truly unique is its accessibility—or rather, its purposeful inaccessibility by vehicle directly to the campsite. This campground is primarily a hike-in, bike-in, or boat-in destination, which contributes significantly to its serene and pristine environment.

For Idaho locals, reaching the starting point for Plowboy Campground typically involves driving to the northern end of Priest Lake. From there, the adventure truly begins. The most common approach for hikers is a roughly 3-mile trail. This trail, while presenting some ups and downs and a few small inclines, is generally considered manageable even for inexperienced backpackers, taking approximately an hour and a half to complete. This relatively short and scenic trek makes backpacking accessible to a wider range of outdoor enthusiasts in Idaho, offering a rewarding sense of accomplishment upon arrival.
