Pleasant Valley Owens River Campground is located at Bishop, CA 93514, USA. More precisely, it is situated along the renowned Owens River, just north of the town of Bishop. This location places it within the vast and beautiful landscape of the Eastern Sierra, a region traversed by U.S. Route 395, the primary north-south highway that connects much of California to this outdoor paradise.
For Californians, the campground's accessibility via Highway 395 makes it a relatively straightforward drive from both Northern and Southern California. Once you reach the Bishop area, access roads to the campground are generally well-maintained. However, as noted in a customer review, navigating the campground itself can be "very confusing" due to the distinction between "reserved online and walk up only sites," and markers being at the "BACK of the sites, not toward the front." This suggests that upon arrival, it’s advisable to take a moment to understand the layout and identify available sites carefully before setting up camp. Despite this initial navigational challenge, the underlying "peaceful" location and "amazing" scenery make the effort worthwhile once settled.
Its proximity to Bishop means campers have convenient access to a full range of services, including grocery stores, gas stations, outdoor gear shops, and various dining options, providing essential support for any camping trip.
Pleasant Valley Owens River Campground offers a blend of essential services and rustic amenities, catering to campers who appreciate direct access to nature. Based on customer reviews, here's what visitors can typically expect:
- Campsites: The campground features two types of sites: those that can be "reserved online" and "walk up only sites." This requires arrivals without reservations to first identify available walk-up sites. While some sites might feel "more for trailers" with less space for tents directly adjacent to vehicles, sites are generally present to accommodate various setups. No specific details about individual site amenities (like picnic tables or fire rings) were provided in the reviews, but these are standard for most developed campgrounds.
- Bathrooms: The campground provides bathrooms. Reviews offer mixed opinions: one praises "very nice to have clean bathrooms and garbage collection readily available," while another states, "Bathrooms are pits, but if you're into the rugged, this is the place to be." This suggests the restrooms are basic vault or pit toilets, not flush toilets, and their cleanliness might vary depending on usage and maintenance schedules, aligning with a more rustic camping experience.
- Garbage Collection: "Garbage collection readily available" is a noted convenience, meaning designated trash bins are provided for waste disposal, promoting cleanliness within the campground.
- Water Access: While not explicitly detailed, the mention of bathrooms and a general campground setting implies some form of water access, though it might be via hand pumps or shared spigots rather than individual site hookups. Campers should always confirm potable water availability.
- No Clear Boundaries for Sites: A unique characteristic is that "there's not very clear boundaries between sites and the markers are at the BACK of the sites, not toward the front." This can lead to initial confusion but also potentially offers a more open and communal feel once settled.
Pleasant Valley Owens River Campground offers several compelling features and highlights that make it a highly desirable destination for Californians, especially those drawn to the Eastern Sierra's unique allure:
- Exceptional Fishing: A consistent highlight across reviews is the "Great fishing" offered by its proximity to the Owens River. This makes it a premier destination for anglers, offering access to one of California's most famous trout fisheries.
- Stunning Mountain Views: Campers consistently praise the "scenery and mountain views amazing" and "nice views in every direction." The open landscape of Pleasant Valley provides unobstructed panoramas of the surrounding Sierra Nevada peaks, creating a truly majestic backdrop for camping.
- Peaceful and Quiet Location: Despite the initial confusion of site layout, the campground's overall environment is described as "peaceful" and "quiet." This makes it an ideal retreat for those seeking to escape urban noise and find tranquility in nature.
- Diverse Site Availability (Reservable & Walk-up): The availability of both "reserved online" and "walk up only sites" offers flexibility for different types of planners. While it might be confusing initially, it caters to both spontaneous adventurers and those who prefer to secure their spot in advance.
- Wildlife Encounters: The presence of "marauding little beasts" (raccoons) indicates active wildlife in the area. While a "word of warning" regarding securing food is necessary, it also highlights the opportunity for wildlife viewing and an immersive natural experience.
- Gateway to Eastern Sierra Exploration: Its location near Bishop provides easy access to a wealth of other outdoor activities in the Eastern Sierra, including hiking trails, other fishing lakes, hot springs, and scenic drives along Highway 395.
- Long-Standing Appeal: The sentiment "I've been going here for years. Love this spot" speaks volumes about the campground's enduring popularity and the loyalty it inspires among repeat visitors, showcasing its reliable appeal.

Pleasant Valley Owens River Campground Reviews
We found this campground very confusing, here's why:First, there's two types of campsites - reserved online and walk up only sites. So it you are arriving without a reservation, you'll need to note the available walk-up sites before you choose one that someone else reserved.Second, there's not very clear boundaries between sites and the markers are at the BACK of the sites, not toward the front. Once you find a site and get set up; however, the location is peaceful and the scenery and mountain views amazing. One word of warning to note is about the raccoons; they are marauding little beasts! We put our cooler on our rooftop rack and they climbed up the hood and onto the roof to try to plunder it!Also, very nice to have clean bathrooms and garbage collection readily available here as well.We hope to visit this beautiful place again soon!

Jul 04, 2025 · jesse AlcantarHad a great time with the family. Easy to access and far enough away to feel disconnected. Camp sites are marked and in good shape. Definitely recommend going there. The river was easy to fish and trap crawfish.
Jun 06, 2024 · eddie mendozaPleasant Valley Camp Ground is a mile off of 395, 12 miles west of Bishop. Small park with some sites along the river (small as it may be). It's quiet except for an occasional car going by. I am here in late October so it's cool with night time temperature down in the 30's. I would come back here. $14/night no hook ups.
