What is Worth Choosing
Pharaoh Campground stands out as a premier choice for those seeking a rustic and genuine camping experience in Southern Illinois. What makes it particularly appealing is its commitment to providing a primitive, back-to-nature atmosphere. This approach allows visitors to truly disconnect from their digital lives and reconnect with the natural world.
The location is perhaps its biggest asset. Being situated in Herod, right on the edge of the Shawnee National Forest, means that campers have direct access to a wealth of outdoor activities. Reviews from past visitors often highlight the campground’s natural beauty and the peaceful solitude it offers. While some have noted the primitive nature of the facilities, such as the use of pit toilets, they also frequently comment on how clean and well-maintained they are. The absence of electricity is seen not as a drawback but as a key part of the experience, encouraging campers to enjoy the simple pleasures of a campfire and the night sky. While some sites may have drainage issues during heavy rain, as noted by a reviewer, this is often a minor inconvenience compared to the overall positive experience. The on-site running water and picnic tables are valuable amenities that enhance the camping experience without compromising its rustic charm.
Ultimately, choosing Pharaoh Campground is about choosing an experience. It’s for those who value authenticity over luxury, tranquility over convenience, and connection with nature over connection to the internet. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Beautiful but small. Not alot of camp sites. One day was not so busy with some spots open. Next day all spots filled up after noon. Bathrooms are pit toilets but not bad. Clean water on site. No electricity. Plenty and simple and difficult trails near by. Definitely would stay here again.
June 22 · David VaughnWe ended up there during an unfortunate weekend with a bunch of snow and rain.If they were looking for some suggestions, I'd say try to level out some areas and improve drainage. Most of the sites had standing water in the gravel and outside of the gravel quickly because a mud pit. With that being said, if you go there during nice weather I'm sure it's great

July 14 · Sergey DunaevPretty nice campsites that are fairly large. We had a nice walk out view from our site. This campsite is right across from Garden of the Gods so it can be tough to get a campsite. We hammock camp so we have to be selective of our campsite.
