West Liberty, KY 41472, USA

4.0
10 sites, only 3 available, 7 were under water due to flooding. Locals said that is normal for this time of year. My site on 4/13 vs 4/14. You can see how much the water rose overnight. Lots of trash along the waterline and in the overgrowth around the sites. Sign posted a warning that “campground is possibly going to be closed permanently due to human feces, toilet paper and trash”. There are 2 port-a-potties that were reasonably clean so not sure why people can’t use them. A shame that humans can ruin such a beautiful area. I’d definitely have a back-up plan if you plan on camping here. - Jacki Swanston Fagan

Paragon Dispersed Camping Area Introduce

For Kentucky locals who truly embrace the essence of primitive camping and desire a raw, unfiltered connection with nature, Paragon Dispersed Camping Area offers a unique and often rewarding experience. Located in the heart of the Daniel Boone National Forest, specifically near the scenic Cave Run Lake, this area provides a handful of designated, free campsites designed for those who prefer to "rough it" away from crowded commercial campgrounds. It’s a place where the sounds of wildlife often replace traffic noise, and the night sky is unfettered by light pollution. While it comes with specific considerations, including its primitive nature and susceptibility to natural conditions, Paragon Dispersed Camping Area promises stunning lakeside views and a genuine sense of escape. This article will provide a detailed look at what you can expect from Paragon Dispersed Camping Area, covering its location, the basic amenities available, its unique highlights, and important information for planning your visit.

Paragon Dispersed Camping Area is located in West Liberty, KY 41472, USA, situated within the vast expanse of the Daniel Boone National Forest on the Cumberland District. Its strategic placement directly on an arm of the beautiful Cave Run Lake is a significant draw for campers. Access to the camping area is generally considered easy, with paved roads leading all the way to the campsites. This is a considerable advantage for those with a variety of vehicles, from cars pulling small trailers to vans, ensuring a relatively smooth journey to your chosen site.

The area is specifically located near Forest Service Road 947. To reach it from I-64, you would typically take exit 137 (KY 32) toward Morehead, turn right onto US 60, then left onto KY 519, and continue for several miles before turning left onto Forest Service Road 947, where the campground will be on your right. This route offers a scenic introduction to the Eastern Kentucky landscape, winding through forested areas. Its location provides both a sense of wild seclusion and reasonable accessibility to the nearby town of Morehead for any last-minute supplies, though it's advised to arrive prepared as services are limited on-site. The close proximity to Cave Run Lake, a well-known recreational hotspot, means that campers have immediate access to fishing, kayaking, and enjoying the water right from their campsite.

Paragon Dispersed Camping Area offers a very basic, primitive camping experience, meaning amenities are minimal and campers should be largely self-sufficient.

  • Designated Primitive Campsites: There are approximately 10 designated campsites, designed for tent and trailer camping. Some sites may include basic features like a lantern post and a fire ring. These sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis; no reservations are accepted.
  • Chemical Toilets: Two port-a-potties are typically available and are generally maintained to a reasonable standard, providing a basic restroom facility. These are available mid-April through November.
  • Trash Pickup (Limited): While there's a general understanding that trash pickup is available (mid-April through November), reviews indicate that trash accumulation can be an issue. Campers are strongly encouraged to practice Leave No Trace principles and pack out all their waste to help preserve the area's beauty.
  • No Potable Water: There is no potable (drinking) water available on-site. Campers must bring all their own water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs.
  • No Electric or Sewer Hookups: As a primitive dispersed camping area, there are no electric or sewer hookups. RV campers must be prepared for boondocking.

Paragon Dispersed Camping Area, despite its primitive nature, offers several distinct features and highlights that appeal to specific types of Kentucky campers:

  • Lakeside Sites with Scenic Views: A major highlight is that campsites are located directly on the water's edge of Cave Run Lake, offering "amazing" and "picture worthy" views. Many sites provide plenty of tree coverage for shade and ideal spots for hanging hammocks, creating a serene and picturesque camping environment.
  • Free Camping: This is a significant draw for budget-conscious campers. As a free, primitive camping area within the Daniel Boone National Forest, it offers an economical way to experience Kentucky's natural beauty.
  • Direct Water Access: The lakeside location means campers can enjoy easy access for fishing directly from their campsite. It also provides convenient launching points for kayaks and other small watercraft, allowing for effortless paddles on Cave Run Lake.
  • Abundant Tree Coverage: The presence of ample trees around the campsites offers natural shade, which is invaluable during warmer months, and adds to the secluded, natural feel of the area.
  • Wildlife Observation: Reviewers have noted opportunities to observe local wildlife, including herons, woodpeckers, and hawks, enhancing the immersive nature experience.
  • Seclusion and Quiet: When not overly crowded, the dispersed nature of the campsites can offer a sense of quiet and privacy, allowing campers to truly disconnect and enjoy the sounds of nature.
  • Off-Grid Experience: The lack of cell service (requiring a walk of about a mile up the road to find a signal) is highlighted as a positive by those looking for a true break from technology and a chance to fully immerse themselves in the outdoors.
  • Primitive Camping Ethos: For those who prefer a less developed, more self-reliant camping adventure, Paragon offers the quintessential primitive camping experience within a beautiful national forest setting.

Phone: (606) 784-6428 (This is a general Forest Service contact number that can often provide information about specific dispersed areas.)

It is highly recommended to call ahead, especially during spring, to inquire about current water levels and accessibility, as the area is known to be prone to flooding, which can lead to temporary closures.

Paragon Dispersed Camping Area is particularly well-suited for Kentucky locals who are experienced campers, value genuine primitive experiences, and seek an escape from the ordinary. For those residing in Kentucky, its location within the beautiful Daniel Boone National Forest and directly on Cave Run Lake provides an accessible wilderness retreat without requiring extensive travel. This means more time enjoying the serene lakeside views and less time on the road. The fact that it is a free camping area makes it an incredibly attractive option for budget-conscious Kentuckians who want to maximize their outdoor adventures without a significant financial outlay. This affordability allows for more frequent trips and a deeper connection with the state's natural resources.

The primitive nature of Paragon, including limited amenities and the lack of cell service, is not a drawback but a feature for a specific segment of local outdoor enthusiasts. For Kentuckians looking to truly disconnect from their devices and immerse themselves in nature, this "digital detox" is a welcome break. The challenge of potential flooding, while requiring a backup plan, is also part of the raw, wild appeal for those who understand and respect nature's unpredictable elements. The beautiful lakeside sites, offering opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and simply enjoying the tranquility of the water, resonate deeply with Kentucky's outdoor culture. Despite some challenges like trash accumulation (which underscores the importance of Leave No Trace principles for all visitors), Paragon Dispersed Camping Area offers a unique and authentic taste of the Kentucky wilderness that is both accessible and profoundly rewarding for those prepared to embrace its untamed beauty. It’s a perfect spot for locals who prioritize solitude, natural beauty, and a truly off-grid camping adventure in their own backyard.
