For Marylanders seeking an unparalleled coastal escape, Oceanside Walk-In Campground on Assateague Island offers an experience that truly is a "dream." Visitors consistently rave about the "wonderful experience" they have here, often returning year after year, calling it their "happy place." The campground is lauded for its "friendly and informative" staff, who ensure the "park is clean and well kept." Even without a clear view of the ocean from every site, the immersive soundscape of the waves is always present, creating a profound sense of tranquility. Campsites are described as "spacious," providing ample room for your setup, even if it's a short walk from the parking area. If you're a Maryland local yearning for a truly distinctive beach camping adventure where wild ponies roam and the ocean whispers you to sleep, Oceanside Walk-In Campground beckons you to make it your own "happy place."
Oceanside Walk-In Campground is nestled within the Assateague Island National Seashore, with its general address being Berlin, MD 21811, USA. This places it on the northern, Maryland portion of Assateague Island, a barrier island renowned for its wild horses and pristine, undeveloped beaches.
Accessing Oceanside Walk-In Campground is a unique part of the experience. Unlike drive-up campgrounds, this is a tent-only, walk-in facility. This means campers park their vehicles in a centralized parking area and then carry their gear to their designated campsite. The walk distance from the parking area to the individual sites can range from approximately 100 to 200 feet, depending on the specific site location. This walk-in aspect contributes significantly to the campground's serene and secluded atmosphere, limiting vehicle traffic within the camping areas and enhancing the natural ambiance.
To reach Assateague Island National Seashore from mainland Maryland, visitors typically drive through Ocean City, Maryland, and then take Route 611 (Stephen Decatur Highway) south to the island. There is an entrance fee to the National Seashore in addition to the camping fees. Upon arrival, campers must check in at the Ranger Station. This strategic location offers the best of both worlds for Marylanders: easy access from major population centers like Baltimore and Washington D.C. (typically a few hours' drive), combined with the feeling of stepping into a truly wild and protected coastal environment. While the walk-in nature requires some planning for gear transport, the reward is an unparalleled sense of peace and direct access to one of Maryland's most iconic natural treasures.
- Tent-Only Sites: Oceanside Walk-In Campground is exclusively for tent camping. Sleeping in vehicles is prohibited in these sites.

- Fire Rings / Grills: Every site includes a designated fire ring, often with a grill, for campfires and cooking.
- Drinking Water: Potable drinking water is available within the campground area.
- Vault Toilets: Basic restroom facilities are provided through vault toilets (sometimes described as composting toilets), which are typically clean and well-maintained.
- Seasonal Cold Water Showers: Cold water showers are available seasonally (typically mid-March through mid-November) for rinsing off sand after a day at the beach. These are often open-air or semi-enclosed facilities.
- Staff On Site: Friendly and informative staff are available to assist campers and ensure the park is well-kept.
- Food Storage: Campers are required to properly store all food inside a latchable hard-sided cooler or inside their vehicle to prevent interactions with wild horses and other wildlife.

Oceanside Walk-In Campground is part of Assateague Island National Seashore, managed by the National Park Service. As a federal campground, it typically operates under standard fee structures set by the NPS and does not frequently offer widespread, ongoing promotional discounts akin to private commercial campgrounds. The value derived from camping here comes from the unique, protected natural environment, direct ocean access, and the opportunity to encounter wild horses.
However, Maryland residents and other visitors may be eligible for federal pass discounts. For example:
- America the Beautiful - National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Pass Series:
- Annual Pass: Covers entrance fees at national parks and federal recreational lands for a year.
- Senior Pass: A lifetime pass (or annual option) for U.S. citizens or permanent residents aged 62 or over. Holders of this pass often receive a 50% discount on individual campsites (like those at Oceanside Walk-In Campground).
- Access Pass: A free lifetime pass for U.S. citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities. Holders also typically receive a 50% discount on individual campsites.
- Military Pass: Free annual passes available for active duty military members and their dependents.
- Fourth Grade Pass: A free annual pass for U.S. 4th graders and their families.
It is essential for Marylanders to check the official Recreation.gov website or the National Park Service's Assateague Island National Seashore camping page for the most current rates, reservation policies, and any applicable pass discounts. Reservations are required for Oceanside Walk-In sites from March 15 through November 15 each year. During the off-season (November 16 through March 14), walk-in sites are typically closed. Planning and booking well in advance are highly recommended, especially for peak season, as these unique island campsites are incredibly popular.

Oceanside Walk-In Campground Reviews
We camp here every year and it is always a wonderful experience. Staff is friendly and informative. Park is clean and well kept. Campsites are spacious, and you can hear the ocean even if you don't have a clear view of it. Waking up to the ocean and wild horses is a dream!!! 10/10 will keep coming back. It is truly my happy place. You should check it out and make it yours, too!!!
May 13, 2025 · JENNifer LaFaziaLoved this campground. I stayed at site 68, it is a short walk from the parking area to the site. There were some ticks, but the flying pests weren't bad Unfortunately we didn't see any horses on the beach or around the campground. The only horses we spotted were right at the entrance in the marsh. Beautiful beach.
May 16, 2025 · Michelle BowmanWe loved camping along the beach with the horses walking through the campsite. Watch out for goathead burrs. Our poor dogs were loaded with them before we realized the burrs were everywhere.
Oct 31, 2024 · Karen DeeWe camped here a couple of nights and very much enjoyed everything. The site was nice and provided a picnic table and fire pit. There were 2 toilets, showers and water pump. The beach is quiet and didn't have tons of people there like at other beaches. It's a nice place to take your family and pets. Just gotta watch out for horses entering the camp site.
Apr 08, 2023 · Raymond R.I drove by looking for wild horses. It seems like this area is where they hang out. Unfortunately I didn't see any, but I didn't realized people camp in tents here!! Not just in RV. Great idea!! There are very roomy restrooms in each area. Note, the toilets are not flushable. Just a toilet with a huge hole. I'm posting a picture I look by the beach to give you an idea how the toilets look.
