Oak Point Campground is situated on San Juan Canyon Road, San Juan Bautista, CA 95045, USA. This location places it within a scenic area characterized by rolling hills and impressive views, offering a sense of elevation that allows for dramatic sunrise and sunset spectacles above the clouds. While the campground is managed by a local entity, its specific location within the broader San Juan Bautista area positions it as a gateway to the region's natural attractions, including nearby state parks or open spaces that feature significant trail systems.
Accessibility to Oak Point Campground is generally straightforward by vehicle. San Juan Bautista is a well-known town in San Benito County, easily reachable via major highways. The drive to the campground itself along San Juan Canyon Road takes you away from the immediate town center and into a more secluded, elevated environment. While some aspects of the campground might suggest a lower level of maintenance, the general consensus is that it is accessible for camping purposes. The campground also features a "first come-first serve lot which is tucked back a good amount from the main campsite and is a bit more secluded," offering an alternative for those seeking extra privacy and a slightly more remote feel upon arrival. This combination of standard access to the main sites and a more secluded, walk-in option enhances its appeal to different types of campers within California seeking varying levels of isolation.
Oak Point Campground offers basic services typical of a more rustic or budget-friendly camping experience, with some key amenities for convenience.
Campsites: The campground offers various spots at a good price of $25 per night. While many spots may have "very little privacy" and can be "quite small," site 25 is noted for its "best view." For those seeking more seclusion, a "first come-first serve lot which is tucked back a good amount from the main campsite" is available and is "a bit more secluded."
Restrooms: The campground has restrooms on site. While one review mentioned a "dirty restroom" and "no bathroom" (likely meaning no flush toilets or showers), another specifically stated that the "Restrooms are clean." This suggests varying maintenance levels or experiences, but basic toilet facilities are present.
Self-Check-in: The campground operates on a self-check-in system, offering convenience and flexibility for arrivals.
Fire Rings: Fire rings are provided at the campsites. However, it's important to note that a previous camper found their fire ring "wasn't cleaned before we arrived" and had "leftover dust & broken glass," and that a "grate at site 24" was missing. This indicates potential inconsistencies in site readiness and suggests campers should be prepared to clean their own fire pits upon arrival.
Cement Table and Shelter: One remote campsite (HP01, potentially associated with this area, though the review seems general to the park) specifically mentioned a cement table and shelter over the eating area. While not confirmed for all Oak Point sites, such features can be present in similar remote campgrounds.
No Potable Water (Implied): The reviews do not explicitly mention potable water. For primitive or low-maintenance campgrounds, it is always safest to assume no potable water is available and bring your own supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene.
Oak Point Campground, despite some noted limitations, boasts several compelling features and highlights that make it an attractive option for campers seeking specific experiences in California.
Amazing Sunset/Sunrise Views: The most consistent and impressive highlight is the "beautiful sunset/sunrise view above from the cloud." This elevated position offers spectacular panoramic vistas, making for unforgettable photographic opportunities and a truly magical start and end to your day. "The sunset views are amazing" is a recurring sentiment.
Incredible Peak Trail Access: A major draw for hikers, the campground provides access to an "incredible peak trail." This suggests challenging and rewarding hikes leading to high points with breathtaking scenery, making it ideal for avid trekkers.
Affordable Pricing: At "$25" per night, the sites are considered "good" value, making Oak Point Campground a budget-friendly option for California locals looking to experience the outdoors without a hefty price tag.
Secluded First-Come, First-Served Area: The availability of a "first come-first serve lot which is tucked back a good amount from the main campsite and is a bit more secluded" offers a valuable option for those prioritizing privacy and a more remote feel, adding a layer of flexibility to the camping experience.
Quiet Atmosphere (when not full): When not at full capacity, the campground can be "pretty quiet," indicating periods of peaceful solitude, which is highly valued by many campers.
Good for Short Stays: Given the modest amenities and emphasis on views and trails, it appears well-suited for shorter camping trips focused on hiking and enjoying the natural scenery.

Oak Point Campground Reviews
Beautiful sunset/sunrise view above from the cloud. Few nice trails. Rather than that, nothing else impressive. Self checkin. Dirty restroom. No bathroom. Low maintenance. My site fire ring wasn't cleaned before we arrived, so we had leftover dust & broken glass from the previous occupation. Also missing grate at site 24. Will not return.
May 31, 2023 · Huong TranAverage campground, 3 stars for the sites themselves, 5 stars for the incredible peak trail. Most spots have very little privacy, and can be quite small, the best view is probably at 25 though this has very little privacy, pick a spot in the back of the camp if you want a tiny bit more privacy. Also, there is a first come-first serve lot which is tucked back a good amount from the main campsiteand is a bit more secluded. The price for the sites are good, 25 dollars.Restrooms are cleanThe sunset views are amazing
Mar 29, 2021 · Teo HahsStayed 1 night at site 24 in late November.Pros:*Site itself was very private, cut off from the other sites*Great views from the edge of the site*Nestled in the luscious oak trees*Lots of shade (for summer camping)*We experienced no flies in late November*Beautiful sunriseCons:*There was little space for a larger tent, ours is about 9x13 feet and there was only 1 spot it would fit*Sort of far from the bathroom, we bring our own toilet tent system, but for those who don’t it would be annoying.*The space was really windy; of course it’s on the edge of a mountain, so I get it. Be prepared for wind.*The drive up was quite windy and more precarious than I was prepared for, but do-able.See my photos, all are taken in or just outside of site #24.
