For us Virginians, New River Junction is not just a campground; it’s an institution. For decades, it has served as a beloved local retreat, perfectly encapsulating the outdoor spirit and natural beauty that defines our Commonwealth. Its primary suitability for locals stems from its unparalleled access to the New River itself – a truly ancient and remarkable waterway that provides phenomenal fishing (as countless local anglers can attest, boasting catches of "biggest smallmouth yet" and even muskie opportunities) and the unique, beloved tradition of tubing. The ability to "rip some lips" on a fishing line or simply enjoy a leisurely float down "Mother Nature's water park" without having to travel far makes it an ideal spontaneous escape or a well-loved annual tradition.
The consistent praise for the staff being "very nice and respectful" and "always friendly" reinforces the welcoming atmosphere that Virginians appreciate in local businesses. This family-oriented approach ensures that even with the occasional train passing at night (which, as one camper noted, "it is what it is to be this close to my favorite fishing spot"), the overall experience remains overwhelmingly positive. The convenient location near Blacksburg means it’s easily accessible from many parts of the state, reducing travel time and maximizing time spent enjoying the river. Features like hot showers, Wi-Fi, and complimentary grilling services at Big Falls Park enhance comfort without detracting from the rustic charm.
The fact that people have been "visiting this place for about 10 years now and have never once been disappointed" speaks volumes about the consistent quality and lasting appeal of New River Junction. It’s a place where generations of Virginians have made memories, perfected their casting techniques, and found solace in the river’s rhythm. For any Virginian seeking a reliable, fun, and genuinely welcoming outdoor experience centered around the magnificent New River, New River Junction stands ready to deliver an unforgettable adventure right in our own backyard.

New River Junction Reviews
This was a great place to go fishing. We caught a smallmouth bass on the first cast. The workers were very nice and respectful. Overall a great place. The sight was amazing.
Jun 11, 2025 · Will ReedI've been visiting this place for about 10 years now and have never once been disappointed. The accommodations fairly fit the price of the stay. The fishing is phenomenal and the staff are always friendly. If you don't think they are, then maybe the staff are not the problem. Train runs at night which can disrupt sleep but it is what it is to be this close to my favorite fishing spot.Caught my biggest smallmouth yet just last year (pretty close to citation size at about 20in long respective to the paddle size). You can also hookup on some muskie but if you're not fishing for them with correct tackle, then good luck landing one. I've already booked my trip for this year and ready to rip some lips.
May 12, 2025 · Andrew DilleyWent here for the first time the other day. Was very well maintained and clean. Every single staff member was nice. The water was more shallow than expected but it was still a good view. Bathrooms are apparently outdated so just be mindful of that before you go.
Jun 09, 2025 · Ky VoBased on some previous reviews, I guess we just lucked out! Our campsite was great, the view was amazing, the tubing was wonderful AND all of the staff we encountered, including Jake, were friendly and helpful. They even stopped by before leaving for the night to see if we needed anything! We were in an RV and did not need to use the bathrooms. We just had to conserve water but not a problem for four days. The weather was great, low humidity… a little rain. I normally draw mosquitos to me. I got one bite the whole four days we were there. The website was clear about the trains and turns out we really enjoyed them…at midnight and at 6 am. It was not crowded this weekend, I think the rain in the forecast kept folks away. Blacksburg was fun to explore. Maybe just the perfect weekend for a great experience…I don’t know.
Jul 23, 2024 · Donna RinaldoOffice staff was rude. They have NO accommodation for people arriving late and absurd rules like no one is allowed to drive in after 11 pm, even if you are staying there (I assume this is for noise which is understandable but seems extreme). Bathrooms (one for men and one for women- meaning one toilet and one shower for each) are so gross you don’t feel like you’re getting clean when you shower. Legitimate mold along the top of the shower. Warning, this campground is located right next to a train track. You don’t have to wonder if it will come… just how many times! Came 5x in one night, tent sites are so close you feel like you are laying on the tracks, you can feel the ground shaking and because it is by an intersection they blow the whistle which is EXTREMELY loud. What could be a great experience camping on the New River is otherwise abysmal and regrettable.
