Mountwood Park Campground

Borland Springs Rd, Waverly, WV 26184, USA

4.0
We planned a three-day stay at the Lake House, but chose to seek other accomodations once we arrived. Our host, Briana, was clearly disappointed, but she treated us with consideration. On arriving, we almost drove by the Lake House because we thought it was a public restroom for the archery course. We suspect the building was originally built as a public restroom and was modified to create one apartment from the men’s room and another from the ladies’ room. The front door opens to a narrow hallway, at the end of which hangs a dustmop and broom. The back deck is spacious and has a scenic view of the lake, but traffic noise from Route 50 competed with birdsong. Deck seating is limited to a large picnic table with wheelchair access. Guests would apparently need to bring along any additional deck seating. We do not recall seeing any closets. The walls contained no artwork. There is no TV or wifi, which we knew in advance. The furniture is plain and sturdy. The units are nonsmoking, as indicated by the sign on the front door.In lieu of windows, translucent material covers openings in the walls and ceiling. Sliding glass doors to the deck lack screens, leaving no opportunity for fresh air ventilation. The fragrance of cleaning products was strong. On the plus side: Brianna is delightful and an excellent communicator. The interior was spotlessly clean, and the kitchen and large bathroom looked new and quite functional. The building is located near the entrance to a mountain bike trail. Also, pricing is quite affordable. - Arlene Armstrong

Location and Accessibility

Mountwood Park Campground is strategically located at Borland Springs Rd, Waverly, WV 26184, USA. This address places it conveniently in Wood County, West Virginia, making it easily accessible for residents throughout the state, particularly those in the western and central regions. The park is just a short drive from Parkersburg, WV, providing easy access to city amenities and services while allowing campers to retreat to a peaceful natural setting. Major state routes connect directly to the park, ensuring straightforward navigation. While some areas of the park may experience ambient noise (like traffic from Route 50 near the lake house, as noted in a review), the majority of the campground, especially the upper loops, offers a quiet and serene environment, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the sounds of nature. The accessibility combined with the park's vastness makes Mountwood a practical and appealing destination for West Virginia locals seeking both convenience and immersion in the outdoors.

Services Offered

Mountwood Park Campground offers a variety of services designed to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable, catering to different camping styles.

  • Campsites: The campground provides numerous sites suitable for both RVs and tents. These sites vary, with some offering electric hookups. Visitors recommend the upper loops of the campground for a quieter experience with more wildlife activity, and easier access for larger campers compared to the lower levels which tend to have more permanent summer spots.
  • Cabin Rentals: For those seeking more comfort, Mountwood Park offers cabin rentals. These cabins, particularly those at the uppermost part of the campground, are noted to be "nice and at the upper most part of the campground very peaceful spot." While one specific "Lake House" cabin received mixed reviews regarding its conversion and amenities (no TV/WiFi, strong cleaning product fragrance, limited seating), the general availability of cabins provides a good option for non-tent campers. Features like spotlessly clean interiors and functional kitchens/bathrooms were praised even in critical reviews.
  • Restrooms and Showers: Public restrooms are available within the park, and typically at campgrounds. While specific details on the quality of these at the campground were not provided, the park aims to provide functional facilities.
  • Potable Water Access: Given it's a developed campground within a park, access to potable water points is expected.
  • Fire Rings and Picnic Tables: Standard at most campsites, fire rings for campfires and picnic tables for outdoor dining are generally provided at each site.
  • Recreational Opportunities: The park itself offers a wide array of recreational services, including access to extensive mountain bike trails, hiking trails, and a 50-acre lake for fishing.
