Miller Canyon Group Sites

Crestline, CA 92325, USA

4.0
Unfortunately Millard Canyon Group site 2 (part of Silverwood Lake campground) is not near the parking area. All your camping gear needs to be walked 200 feet to the site location and if you have people in your group in trailers they essentially won’t be camping with you as they will be parked in the parking lots. Additionally site 2 is the closest to the creek so those in site 1 and 3 will come into your site and use the creek there. The biggest disappointment with this site however is the amount of trash the visitors leave behind. When we arrived the site was covered in broken water balloons. My three young children picked up over 900 pieces of trash and didn’t make a dent at all. There is a nice large field between all the group sites and it appears others thought it appropriate to have a water balloon fight there and leave their trash. While there we also found people who were enjoying the creek left their bottle caps in the creek as well.In another note the park staff talks about how frequent black bears are in the area, however there are not bear boxes at each campsite, nor bear proof bins, and there are basic trash cans at each site without campers discarding trash in dumpster each night. We did find out however that the bears frequent the day use areas every night and are more frequent in the main campgrounds near the lake because of this. There is not a single bear proof trash container the Silverwood Lake SRA to my knowledge.Lastly the Nature Center is lovely, and worth visiting, but unfortunately you need to wait in the hours long line of cars trying to access the lake each morning. They really should consider a separate entrance for those visiting just the nature center or are existing campers. - Roxanne Pipkin Tamayo

Miller Canyon Group Sites Introduce

For Californians seeking a spacious and convenient outdoor escape for their large family gatherings, scout troops, or group events, Miller Canyon Group Sites at Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area in Crestline, CA, offer a compelling option. Tucked away in the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains, this designated group camping area provides ample space and a picturesque setting for your next collective adventure. It’s a chance to gather with your community amidst nature, enjoying the fresh mountain air and the natural beauty of one of Southern California's beloved recreational areas.

Miller Canyon Group Sites cater specifically to larger parties, providing a unique alternative to individual campsites. This means you’ll have plenty of room to spread out, set up multiple tents, and enjoy communal activities like grilling and campfires. As one reviewer noted, the sites are "big for multiple campsites" and have "plenty of picnic tables and areas for grilling and campfire." This expansive setup fosters a sense of camaraderie and shared experience, making it ideal for creating lasting memories with your entire group.

Beyond the spaciousness, the location offers a wealth of recreational opportunities. Silverwood Lake, known for its boating, fishing, and swimming, is a major draw, and while the group sites aren't directly on the lake's edge, a nearby trail provides a scenic route to the water. The presence of a creek adjacent to some sites adds a delightful element, perfect for cooling off or simply enjoying the tranquil sounds of flowing water. For those who love hiking, trails abound, and the local Nature Center offers educational insights into the area's ecology.

While the experience at any popular California outdoor destination comes with its nuances, Miller Canyon Group Sites provide a valuable resource for locals looking to host substantial gatherings in a natural setting. It’s an opportunity to create a memorable group experience, surrounded by the natural beauty that makes the San Bernardino Mountains a cherished escape for Californians.

Location and Accessibility

Miller Canyon Group Sites are nestled within the scenic Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, located in Crestline, CA 92325, USA. This position places the campsites in the beautiful San Bernardino Mountains, offering a refreshing mountain escape for Southern Californians.

Accessibility to Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area and subsequently to Miller Canyon Group Sites is generally straightforward by vehicle. The park is accessible via State Route 138, which connects to major freeways like I-15 and I-215. For Californians driving from the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County, or the Inland Empire, it's a manageable drive into the mountains, offering a relatively quick transition from urban environments to natural landscapes.

It's important to note a specific aspect of accessibility for the Miller Canyon Group Sites, as highlighted by a customer review: "Millard Canyon Group site 2 (part of Silverwood Lake campground) is not near the parking area. All your camping gear needs to be walked 200 feet to the site location and if you have people in your group in trailers they essentially won’t be camping with you as they will be parked in the parking lots." This indicates that while there is plentiful parking available, campers should be prepared to transport their gear a moderate distance from the vehicle to the actual campsite. Those with trailers or RVs will need to park them in designated lots rather than directly at the group site itself, meaning their setup will be separate from the main group camping area.

Another point of accessibility mentioned is the potential for "hours long line of cars trying to access the lake each morning," particularly on busy days, which can affect access to the Nature Center or entering the park for existing campers. This suggests that planning arrival times, especially on weekends or holidays, is crucial. Despite these considerations, the overall access to the Silverwood Lake area from major population centers in Southern California remains a significant advantage for this popular recreational spot.

Services Offered

Miller Canyon Group Sites, as part of the Silverwood Lake State Recreation Area, provide a range of services designed to accommodate large groups while offering a traditional camping experience. While specific amenities might vary slightly by individual group site, the general offerings are geared towards functionality and group interaction.

  • Designated Group Campsites: These sites are specifically reserved for groups, offering large, expansive areas suitable for multiple tents and gathering spaces.
  • Reservations Only: Access to these sites requires advance reservations, which helps manage capacity and ensures a spot for your group. Prices for reservations are noted to be in the range of "$250-300."
  • Plenty of Picnic Tables: Each group site is equipped with numerous picnic tables, providing ample space for dining, games, and communal activities.
  • Grilling and Campfire Areas: Designated areas for grilling and campfires are available, often with fire rings, allowing for outdoor cooking and evening gatherings (subject to fire restrictions).
  • Restrooms: Easily accessible restrooms are provided within the group camping area, ensuring convenience for campers.
  • Plentiful Parking: Large parking areas are available for vehicles, although it's important to note that access to the actual campsite may require walking gear from the parking area (approximately 200 feet for some sites).
  • Trash Cans: Basic trash cans are available at each site, however, a critical note from a customer review indicates a lack of bear-proof bins and the need for campers to be diligent about discarding trash in dumpsters each night due to bear activity.
  • Creek Proximity: Some sites, like Site 2, are noted to be closest to a creek, offering natural water access for enjoyment (though shared with other group sites).
  • Trail Access: Proximity to trails that lead to Silverwood Lake and other areas within the park.
  • Nature Center Access: Campers have access to the Nature Center (though potentially requiring waiting in line to enter the main park area on busy days).

It is crucial for campers to be aware of the "leave no trace" principles, especially regarding trash management, as highlighted by customer feedback about litter. Given the presence of black bears, proactive food storage and trash disposal are paramount for safety and park preservation.
