The campground was beautiful and the spot we got had a direct view of the ocean so that was a plus. The only downside was that the site had not been kept up so coming with my dogs was a pain because weeds kept getting no stuck on them. A day or two in they were doing lawn mowing and weeding while we were there though but that was distracting. The campground was nice and was easy to access. Great beach access and fire rings on the beach for a late night bonfire. - Dana Salas

Introduction / Overview

For California locals yearning for the quintessential Central Coast experience, Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground near Watsonville offers an idyllic and cherished escape. Perched on a scenic bluff overlooking the expansive Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay, this campground provides a breathtaking backdrop for your outdoor adventures. It’s a place where the soothing sound of crashing waves is your constant companion, and every sunset paints the sky in unforgettable hues.

Manresa Uplands is a unique "walk-in" tent-only campground, which contributes to its tranquil atmosphere, keeping out the noise of large RVs (though ample parking is available for your vehicle). While it encourages a more traditional camping experience, it doesn't skimp on essential amenities. Visitors consistently praise the "beautiful" surroundings, the "direct view of the ocean" from many sites, and the convenient "great beach access." Beyond the natural splendor, the campground provides clean facilities, including regularly maintained bathrooms and showers, ensuring a comfortable stay. It’s a beloved spot that many Californians return to year after year, offering a peaceful retreat that feels wonderfully removed from the hustle and bustle, yet remains easily accessible for a weekend getaway or a longer coastal sojourn. From morning strolls collecting shells to late-night bonfires on the beach, Manresa Uplands promises a truly memorable slice of California’s iconic coastline.

Location and Accessibility

Manresa Uplands State Beach & Campground is ideally situated at 205 Manresa Uplands Rd, Watsonville, CA 95076, USA. This prime location places it directly on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay, offering sweeping views of the coastline, including the Santa Cruz Mountains to the northwest and the forested hills of the Monterey Peninsula to the southwest. From Highway 1, south of Aptos, visitors take San Andreas Road southwest for several miles to reach Manresa, which is the first beach access upon reaching the coast.

Accessibility to the campground itself is generally easy by car, with a dedicated parking area for day users and a separate lot for campers. It's important to note that Manresa Uplands is primarily a "walk-in" tent-only campground. This means campers will park their vehicles (there's a lower lot for unloading for up to 20 minutes, then an upper lot for overnight parking) and transport their gear a short distance to their individual campsites. While some visitors find this "a bit of a trek" for hauling gear, the trade-off is a quieter, more secluded camping experience without the immediate presence of vehicles at each site. Bringing a wagon or dolly is often recommended by seasoned campers to make this process easier.

Beach access from the campground is convenient via stairs or a trail that leads directly down from the bluff to the sand. While the stairs can be "a workout" and may pose a challenge for elderly visitors or those with mobility issues, beach wheelchairs are available free of charge through Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks (reservations recommended). This commitment to accessibility ensures that more people can enjoy the stunning shoreline. Its proximity to the city of Santa Cruz, with its famous Boardwalk, and other natural attractions like Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve, makes Manresa Uplands a superb base for exploring the broader Central Coast region, all within a reasonable drive for California locals.
