Lynx Campground

Campground ★4.0

Walker Rd, Prescott, AZ 86303, USA

4.0
Just returned from Lynx Lake Campground, A loop. As always, beautiful, well laid out campground. However, a few multi year problems continue.1. The two flush toilets closed that service A, B, E, F loops. No sign of any effort to open. Door signs says porta potties on the way soon. Not yet. Multi-year problem. Any effort to fix in the 5 months campground closure before the April 1 campground opening? Only alternative for A, B, E, F loops is to hike to the vault toilets in other loops, perhaps in the middle of the night. Note there was no message in the campground website stating these closures - only a message about the low lake level. An advance warning before arriving would have been useful to allow for cancellations.2. All vehicles entering the campground encounter a three-way intersection up the entrance road. First sign say B loop to the left, A loop to the right. No designation for the middle loop. When at the intersection, drivers will face a sign head on with a one way arrow (no loop designation) to head to the right. Photo attached. The result is the majority of new drivers take this route that leads only to the A loop. In the process of a day, this consists of dozens of wayward vehicles looping thru A loop in an effort to find their campsite in another loop. Proper signs, including for the middle road at the 3 way intersection, would help. Or alternatively, paint the directions on the road. - James Kuester

Lynx Campground Introduce

For Arizona residents seeking a peaceful retreat into the cooler, pine-scented air of the mountains, Lynx Campground is a classic and popular choice. Situated just a short drive from the city of Prescott, this campground offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and convenient accessibility. It’s nestled within the Lynx Lake Recreation Area, a stunning 55-acre reservoir that provides a backdrop of serene waters and a landscape of towering ponderosa pines. This is more than just a place to pitch a tent; it’s a destination for families, hikers, and those simply looking to escape the heat and bustle of city life.

Lynx Campground has long been a favorite for its well-maintained, well-laid-out sites. Many visitors praise the cleanliness and the sense of privacy offered by the spacious, wooded campsites. While it is a popular spot, especially on weekends, the campground's design ensures a quiet and enjoyable atmosphere, as noted by a recent camper who experienced "no problem what so ever with wildlife, mosquitos, or loud neighbors." It provides an ideal setting for a quiet evening by a campfire or a day of exploration around the lake.

This article will provide an in-depth, factual look at Lynx Campground, including its amenities, accessibility, and what you need to know before you go. We'll cover everything from the types of sites available to the nearby activities that make Lynx Lake a true recreational hub for locals.

Lynx Campground is located on Walker Rd, Prescott, AZ 86303, USA, within the Prescott National Forest. Its prime location is a key selling point for Arizona residents, as it is just a few miles from Prescott. This means you can be enjoying a peaceful forest setting within minutes of urban conveniences like grocery stores and restaurants. The campground is situated along the west shoreline of Lynx Lake, with many sites offering easy access to the water via short trails.

Accessibility is a strong point for this campground, with a wheelchair accessible entrance and parking lot, and specific sites (20, 21, and 35) that are fully accessible to people with disabilities. The roads and site driveways are paved, making it easy to navigate for both RVs and passenger vehicles. However, a common issue noted by visitors is the signage at the entrance, which can be confusing and lead drivers to the wrong loop. Despite this minor navigational challenge, the overall accessibility is excellent for a national forest campground.

For RV campers, the campground offers RV camping and water hookups. However, it's important to note that while some sites offer these features, there are no RV sewer hookups or dump stations, and RV water tanks cannot be filled directly from the hydrants.

Lynx Campground provides a variety of on-site services and amenities to make your stay comfortable, though it is always wise to be prepared for potential maintenance issues.

  • Public Restrooms: The campground offers both flush and vault toilets, though their availability can be inconsistent due to maintenance issues. It is highly recommended to check for current conditions before your trip and to be prepared with your own supplies, as some flush toilets have been noted as being closed for extended periods.
  • Running Water: Water faucets are located throughout the campground. However, some reviews indicate that water may be unavailable due to maintenance, so it is crucial to bring your own water as a backup, just as you would for a dispersed camping site.
  • Picnic Tables & Fire Rings: Each of the 35 campsites is equipped with a picnic table, a steel fire ring, and a grill, providing the essentials for outdoor cooking and gathering.
  • Tent Sites: The campground is well-suited for tents, with designated tent pads or areas for one to two tents.
  • On-site Services: While there is no camp host or gate house for check-in, the campground is managed by the Forest Service, and staff are noted as being very friendly and helpful.
  • RV Amenities: RV camping is available, with some sites offering RV water hookups. It's important to note that a separate fee may apply for extra vehicles, and there are no electrical or sewer hookups.

The features of Lynx Campground extend far beyond the campsite itself, with the surrounding Lynx Lake Recreation Area offering a wealth of activities.

  • Hiking: The campground offers easy access to a network of trails, including the popular Lynx Lake Loop Trail, which circles the lake. These trails are described as "kid-friendly hikes" and are suitable for most skill levels.
  • Picnics: The campground is an excellent spot for picnics, with dedicated picnic tables and grills at each site. The beautiful scenery and cool climate make for a perfect outdoor meal.
  • Kid-Friendly: Lynx Campground is noted as being "good for kids." The accessible trails, proximity to the lake for fishing and boating, and the general safe and quiet environment make it an ideal family destination.
  • Dog-Friendly: Pets are allowed at the campground, so you can bring your four-legged friends along for the adventure, as long as they are kept on a leash.
  • Lake Activities: While the campground itself is a great basecamp, the main highlight is Lynx Lake. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout and other fish, making it a popular spot for fishing. Additionally, the lake allows for non-motorized and electric motor-powered boating, perfect for kayaking, canoeing, or small fishing boats.

Choosing Lynx Campground is a great option for Arizona locals looking for a well-rounded and convenient camping experience. It strikes a perfect balance between being "in the woods" and being close enough to town that you're not "sol if you forget something," as one camper put it. The quiet, clean, and spacious sites are a huge draw, offering more privacy than many other developed campgrounds. The proximity to Lynx Lake, with its endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, and boating, makes it a destination in itself.

While some visitors have noted ongoing issues with flush toilets and water availability, the positive aspects of this campground far outweigh the negatives. The friendly Forest Service staff, the accessibility for all visitors, and the overall peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect spot for a weekend getaway. The ability to reserve a spot online is a significant benefit, as it ensures you have a place to stay without the uncertainty of first-come, first-served sites. For families, the "kid-friendly" trails and activities provide a safe and fun environment for children to explore the outdoors.

Ultimately, Lynx Campground offers a classic camping experience in a beautiful, natural setting, with enough amenities to make the trip comfortable. It is a testament to the fact that you don't have to travel far from Arizona's urban centers to find a serene and rejuvenating escape.
