Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping Attn: Sue Rose Introduce
For us Ohioans, the lure of Lake Erie is undeniable, offering a refreshing escape from the everyday. When it comes to camping near its shores, sometimes a truly unique, no-frills spot can provide the most memorable experience. Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping, located in Ashtabula, Ohio, offers just that – a distinct, budget-friendly option for those seeking a convenient place to stay with incredibly friendly owners, all while being close to the beautiful lake. It’s a place that might challenge your typical camping expectations, but delivers on genuine hospitality and a memorable, if unconventional, stay.
Attn: Sue Rose, along with the other friendly staff, are consistently praised by visitors for their warm welcome and helpfulness. This personal touch seems to be the true heart of Luoma's. While some aspects of the camping setup might be considered "rustic" or "unconventional" by traditional campground standards, the positive attitude and amiability of the owners create a welcoming atmosphere. One reviewer, for instance, humorously recounted pitching a tent near a boat trailer parking area, noting that the friendly interactions made the experience worthwhile, even with a nearby dumpster and fish cleaning station. This speaks to a certain laid-back charm and the owners' commitment to ensuring guests feel comfortable and valued.
Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping offers a "paradise" that is perhaps more about the unique spirit of its hosts and its proximity to Lake Erie's beauty than about lavish amenities. It caters to a specific type of camper – one who values a budget-conscious stay, appreciates genuine, friendly interactions, and is perhaps a bit adventurous about their camping location. While it may not be for everyone, for many, the quirky charm and the chance to be close to Ashtabula's attractions and the lake are enough to make it a recommended stop on their Ohio adventures. It's a testament to the idea that sometimes, the people and the location matter more than perfectly manicured campsites.
Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping is located at 5649 Lake Rd W, Ashtabula, OH 44004, USA. This address places it squarely in Ashtabula, a city known for its historic harbor, covered bridges, and, of course, its access to Lake Erie. The "Lake Rd W" in the address explicitly highlights its proximity to the lake, which is a major draw for visitors.
Being on Lake Road West means campers have convenient access to Lake Erie's shoreline, offering opportunities for fishing, boating, or simply enjoying the view. The surrounding area is generally beautiful, with the "awesome view over the sea" (Lake Erie) being a consistent highlight. While the immediate neighborhood might feature a mix of residential and mobile home park elements, the overall location within Ashtabula County means easy access to a variety of local attractions. The city of Ashtabula itself offers a charming historic district, unique shops, and local eateries. For those looking to explore more of Northeast Ohio, the location provides a good base for visiting nearby wineries, covered bridges, and other points of interest within Ashtabula County. Accessibility by car is straightforward via local roads, connecting to larger state routes and interstates, making it a viable option for Ohioans looking for a lakeside getaway.
Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping offers a modest but functional set of services, primarily focused on providing a basic and friendly place to stay for campers on a budget or those seeking a less conventional experience.
Tent and RV/Trailer Parking: The campground primarily caters to those with tents and potentially small RVs or trailers. One reviewer mentioned pitching a tent in a "boat trailer parking area of a mobile home park," suggesting that the sites might be less defined than in a traditional campground. There may be a single designated "actual tent camping spot" available at a slightly higher premium.
Basic Utilities (Limited): While not explicitly detailed, the mention of "30 Amps" on one third-party listing indicates that some form of electrical hookup might be available, likely for RVs. "Drinking Water" is also listed as an amenity, suggesting potable water access.
Restroom Facilities: The campground offers toilets that are described as "clean and well stocked" and "free" to use, which is a significant plus for campers.
Pay-Per-Use Hot Showers: Hot showers are available, but they require payment (coins) for use. This is a common feature in budget-friendly campgrounds, allowing guests to choose if they want to pay for this amenity.
Friendly Staff and Owners: A consistent highlight is the "very friendly owners" (Sue Rose and "the dude") and "friendly staffs" who are noted for their welcoming demeanor and willingness to chat about the area's history.
Fire Pit: Some listings mention a "Fire Pit," suggesting that campers may have access to a communal or individual fire pit for campfires.
Water Access: The property is noted to have "water access" to Luoma's beach area, providing direct entry to Lake Erie.
It is important for prospective campers to manage expectations regarding the level of amenities, as the reviews suggest a more basic setup. It's advisable to clarify specific needs and availability directly with the owners when booking.
Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping offers a set of unique features and highlights that distinguish it from more conventional campgrounds, particularly for those seeking a memorable and authentic Ohio experience.
Awesome Lake Erie View and Access: The most significant highlight is the "awesome view over the sea" (Lake Erie) and direct "water access" to Luoma's beach area. This provides immediate opportunities for enjoying the lake, whether for swimming, surfing (hence "Surfers Paradise"), or simply soaking in the scenic beauty.
Exceptional Hospitality and Friendly Owners: The genuine warmth and friendliness of the staff and owners (Attn: Sue Rose, and "the dude") are consistently praised. Their welcoming nature and willingness to engage in conversation make for a very pleasant and personalized experience, overcoming any potential shortcomings in amenities.
Budget-Friendly Option: For campers looking to minimize costs, Luoma's provides a very affordable rate (e.g., $35-$40 per night for a tent site), making it an accessible choice for a wide range of travelers.
Clean and Free Toilets: Despite the rustic nature of some aspects, the toilets are noted as being "clean and well stocked" and "free," which is a crucial and appreciated amenity for any camper.
Unique, Unconventional Charm: The campground offers a distinct, unconventional camping experience that appeals to adventurous and flexible campers. The willingness to pitch a tent near a "boat trailer parking area" or a dumpster, as humorously described by one reviewer, highlights its unique character and provides stories for years to come.
Direct Adjacency to the Northern Rivers Bike Trail: This is a fantastic feature for biking enthusiasts, offering immediate access to a scenic trail for exploration.
Pet-Friendly Policy: While specific rules regarding pets (leash, clean-up, behavior) are likely in place, the acceptance of dogs allows pet owners to bring their furry companions along on their Ohio adventures, which is a major plus for many.
Given the unique and budget-friendly nature of Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping, traditional "promotions" as seen at larger, more commercial campgrounds may not be a primary focus. Instead, the "offers" are more inherent in its pricing structure and the distinct experience it provides.
Affordable Base Rate: The base price of around $35 for a tent site, as mentioned in a review, represents a consistent value offer for budget-conscious campers. This makes it one of the more accessible camping options in the Ashtabula area near Lake Erie.
Premium Site Option: The offer of a single "actual tent camping spot" for an additional $5 (making it $40) indicates a tiered pricing structure that allows campers to opt for a slightly more conventional and potentially quieter spot if available and desired.
Cost-Effective Showers: While hot showers require payment (coins), this system allows campers to manage their costs. For those who prefer to rough it or are comfortable with cold showers, it’s a saving, while still offering the option for a hot shower when desired, essentially a pay-as-you-go amenity.
No-Frills Value: The overall "offer" of Luoma's is its simplicity and lack of extensive, costly amenities, which translates into a lower overnight fee compared to full-service RV resorts or state parks. This appeals to campers who prioritize location and a friendly welcome over luxury facilities.
Direct Water Access: The inclusion of "water access" to Luoma's beach area provides significant value, as direct Lake Erie access for camping at such an affordable price point is a notable feature.
For the most accurate and current pricing, it is highly recommended to contact Luoma's Surfers Paradise Camping directly. They can provide specific details on tent and any RV/trailer options, availability, and any particular policies for your stay.

Wonderful place with awesome view over the seeVery friendly staffs!
Jul 04, 2022 · Daniel KurthVery friendly owners I thought nothing about handing over $35 to pitch a tent in the boat trailer parking area of a mobile home parks next to their dumpster and the fish cleaning station the night before trash pick up day. I was offered the one and only actual tent camping spot for an extra $5. I hadn't really budgeted for the premium package. I also accepted the fact i would have to pay for a hot shower in the morning. Some folks may not like people backing a boat trailer a few feet away from their tent but I don't mind if they don't mind my dog barking at them. Even a garbage truck beeping in reverse for a few minutes as dumpster gets dumped didn't bother me there was a bass boat protecting my tent and my dog loves barking at beeping trucks . My dog apparently appreciated the stirring of scents more than me, but it is the dogs vacation too.Having rising early that morning not particularly hungry anymore or motivated to grill until the aromas settled down some. I decided a hot shower sounded like a little slice of paradise, but had forgotten I had to pay for water until I had undressed and didn't bring coins. But the toilets are clean and well stocked and it's free! I really enjoyed that part of my morning the best so far so we decided to get going while everything was still funny.I have camped near many dumpsters and this is maybe my second favorite. San Diego has much better park dumpsters for free. The town is very beautiful Luoma's beach area has water access. It isn't the most dog fun area do to the speed of the road in front of the house and no sidewalks in the neighborhood.Would I recommend camping here for the $35 package? I like to tell my friends and family about that night so...I don't know. Super nice lady and the dude told me all about the old farm and how everything looked and I enjoyed that so maybe if they remembered me they would tell me more about the area some more.
Nov 03, 2022 · Bob HardingI would like to have been able to give this local business a better mark, but I cannot. We stayed for the holiday weekend, with my mother-in-law having booked site 18, more than 2 months prior. We arrived to find another rig set up in that site. After trying to place us into other permanent sites, which later had their owners return, we ended up sharing the site with the other group. Our squatters were very nice folks, and we made the best of it, but we paid full-price, the owners made sure of that, and were not apologetic for their clear error. We should have left, but had driven 12 hours to be together with family before school started. We basically avoided camp, just using it to sleep. The spot was beautiful, as the pictures from another reviewer last year, show, but the service was not good, and the stinky bathrooms/showers kept me on the prowl for public restrooms when we were in town. Its a shame, with the setting, this place could be a gold mine, but currently, its a ghost-town.
Sep 06, 2017 · Don KirbyWas there a couple of weeks ago. Could not have asked for a better site right on the lake everyone there was friendly both staff and residents .
