Little Pan Staging Area Introduce
For Arizonans seeking a true off-the-grid adventure that is both free and full of opportunity, the Little Pan Staging Area is a well-known secret. Located on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), this site is far from a manicured campground with all the frills. Instead, it offers a raw, authentic Sonoran Desert experience, perfect for those who are self-sufficient and appreciate a more rustic setting. Little Pan serves as a major hub for off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts, but it also provides a peaceful, primitive camping experience for anyone looking to escape the city. It's a place where the stars shine brighter, and the desert landscape stretches for miles, offering a sense of freedom and solitude. The site's character is defined by its rugged beauty and the wide-open spaces that are a hallmark of Arizona's public lands.
Little Pan Staging Area is located off of Table Mesa Road near New River, AZ, approximately 42 miles north of downtown Phoenix. The journey to the site is a significant part of the experience, as it requires a multi-mile drive on an unpaved, washboarded, and rutted dirt road. While the road is manageable, it is essential to take it slowly and carefully, especially if you are in a larger RV. This rugged accessibility helps maintain the area's serene, low-traffic environment. The site is part of the larger Table Mesa Recreation Area, an 18-square-mile zone known for its off-road trails and desert landscapes. Once you arrive, the campground area is coated in crushed rock, which helps prevent mud, a great feature for both RVs and tents. The area offers on-site parking and plenty of space, making it easy to find a spot to settle in. It's a no-fee site, but visitors must adhere to BLM rules, including a maximum stay of 14 days within a 28-day period. The location's remoteness doesn't mean you're disconnected—in a pleasant surprise, reviewers have noted that there is good cell signal for major carriers like T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T, which can be a valuable asset for safety and staying in touch.
As a primitive BLM site, Little Pan Staging Area offers a basic but crucial set of services. Visitors must come prepared to be self-sufficient, bringing all necessary supplies, especially water and food. The amenities that are available, however, are highly valued by campers who appreciate the simplicity and the "pack it in, pack it out" ethos of public lands. The services provided are as follows:
- Public Restrooms: The site has well-kept, accessible vault toilets, which are a major convenience for campers and day-use visitors alike.
- Picnic Tables: There are a number of picnic tables available, providing a designated and clean surface for meals and gathering.
- Primitive RV and Tent Camping: The area is open for both RV and tent camping. While there are no hookups for RVs, there is plenty of flat, open space to accommodate rigs of all sizes. The sites are well-spaced, offering a degree of privacy.
- On-site Parking: Little Pan is designed as a staging and rest area, so on-site parking is a core feature, with ample space for vehicles and trailers.
The true highlights of Little Pan Staging Area are not its man-made amenities but its natural beauty and the unique opportunities it presents. It's a place that rewards those who are prepared to embrace a more rustic style of camping. The rugged landscape and the specific recreational offerings are what make it a must-visit spot for a particular type of Arizonan. Here are some of the key features that make this location special:
- OHV and Off-Roading Hub: The area is a premier destination for off-highway vehicle and ATV riders. It features two OHV training areas and is the entry point to a vast network of off-road trails, providing endless exploration for motorized adventurers.
- Rugged and Peaceful Environment: Despite its popularity with off-roaders, the campground itself is noted for being peaceful, especially at night. The sites are well-spaced, ensuring privacy and a quiet atmosphere.
- Dark Skies: The remote location, far from city lights, makes Little Pan an excellent spot for stargazing. The Milky Way is often visible, providing a stunning natural light show.
- Wildlife and Nature: The campground is a great place to experience the Sonoran Desert. Visitors may hear coyotes in the distance and see various desert flora and fauna.
- Family and Kid-Friendly: The open spaces and opportunities for outdoor play make the area good for kids, who can explore and enjoy the natural environment.
- Strong Cell Signal: The availability of full-bar cell signal for multiple carriers is a significant and unexpected highlight for a remote location, providing a sense of security and connectivity for campers.
Since Little Pan Staging Area is on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), there is no private office or dedicated phone number for the campground itself. The best source of information is the BLM's Phoenix District Office, which oversees the Hassayampa Field Office responsible for this area. It is highly recommended that you contact them for any questions regarding rules, regulations, or current conditions. While the provided address is helpful for navigation, it is not a traditional physical address. It is crucial to use a map or GPS and to be aware of the bumpy road as you approach. The contact information for the managing office is the most reliable way to get up-to-date information before you head out.

Its main appeal lies in its wide-open spaces and the freedom it provides. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Camping at Little Pan. Several miles of washboard and rutted dirt road. Take it slow, no problem. Space for about 10 RV’s. Some picnic tables. Pit toilets are a plus, but as stated by others, bring your own TP. Shots can be heard in the distance at all times of the day. Better spot than Table Mesa
December 19 · GJRWonderful BLM land with off road trails. A great place to camp and relax. No worries about mud in the pit area as it is coated in crushed rock. There are even well kept vault toilets here.Another pro is full signal T-Mobile LTE, even without a band 12 capable phone.Sprint and AT&T also work here. I did not test Verizon. (I am sure it works though.)There is a fair amount of litter along the sides of the trails and near the parking areas. Shame on anyone who would discard refuse here. Pack it in, pack it out. Don't you want your grand children to be able to come here and enjoy riding too? I have no children, but we all share these public lands. Let's do everything we can to keep it that way.
January 03 · Kenji FoxBeautiful and quiet but not a great place for a tent.
March 12 · Pastor Anthony LucasEntrance to lots of outdoor fun. Table Mesa is awesome place for shooting, and offroad vehicles. If you don't have a good 4wd stay off the TV trails. Clean up after you shoot please. Plenty of trails for stock vehicles with lots of scenery.
January 05 · Jason ClaiborneNice area to use as a base for off-roading. There are vault toilets thankfully. Usually out of toilet paper so make sure to bring some with you. There is a nice flat space for parking and a few picnic tables, no shade. Pretty popular area. Fee of charge. Can use for day use or overnight. There is a corral area for beginning riders to practice.
