Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Colorado locals seeking an authentic and immersive wilderness camping experience, Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground offers an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature's raw beauty. Tucked away near both the vibrant town of Aspen and the charming community of Buena Vista, this dispersed camping area provides a truly "beautiful" setting far removed from the crowded, developed campgrounds. It’s a destination where the sounds of a rushing river become your lullaby and majestic mountain landscapes frame your every view. Unlike traditional campgrounds with designated amenities, Lincoln Creek embraces a more primitive, self-sufficient style of camping, appealing to those who prefer a deeper immersion into the natural environment.
Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground is renowned for its stunning natural features, including the clear, flowing river that meanders through the area. Many sites offer the delightful experience of hearing the water rush by, adding a tranquil soundtrack to your outdoor adventure. This location is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, providing incredibly convenient access to excellent rock climbing spots and a multitude of outstanding trailheads. Whether you're an avid hiker, a climbing enthusiast, or simply someone looking to escape into the Colorado backcountry, Lincoln Creek serves as an ideal basecamp. However, potential visitors should be prepared for the terrain; a 4WD vehicle or at least a larger vehicle is highly recommended due to the rocky nature of the road leading to the dispersed sites, ensuring a safer and smoother journey into this pristine area. This requirement helps maintain the natural integrity and peaceful ambiance of the campground, as it deters less prepared visitors, preserving the serene atmosphere for those who are truly seeking it.
Embracing the concept of dispersed camping, Lincoln Creek allows for a more spread-out and private experience than typically found in established campgrounds. This means fewer facilities but a greater sense of freedom and solitude, which is often precisely what Colorado locals are looking for when they venture into the mountains. It's an opportunity to truly disconnect, breathe the fresh mountain air, and witness the raw, unfiltered beauty of the Rockies.
Location and Accessibility
Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground is strategically located on Lincoln Creek Rd, near Buena Vista, CO 81211, USA, with very close proximity to the renowned town of Aspen. This dual accessibility makes it an incredibly appealing destination for Colorado locals, offering a wilderness experience that's surprisingly close to popular hubs, yet feels wonderfully remote. The campground is approximately 20 minutes down the road from Aspen, providing convenient access to its amenities while allowing campers to retreat into a pristine natural setting.
Accessibility to Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground is a key factor to consider. The road leading to the dispersed sites is described as "very rocky," and as such, a 4WD vehicle is "highly recommended," or at the very least, a larger vehicle with good ground clearance. This characteristic of the road ensures that the campground maintains a certain level of wildness and remains less crowded than more easily accessible areas. Additionally, it's important for potential visitors to be aware of seasonal access restrictions; the road to Lincoln Creek is often not fully open until around June 21st due to snowmelt and road conditions, so planning your trip accordingly and checking current road status is essential.
Once you navigate the access road, the rewards are immense. The location places campers directly alongside Lincoln Creek, a river that runs through the area, providing soothing natural sounds and a source of natural beauty. Beyond the immediate campsite, the campground's proximity to a "dozen awesome trailheads" makes it an ideal base for hikers, backpackers, and nature explorers. Furthermore, excellent rock climbing opportunities are just a stone's throw away, cementing its status as a prime location for adventure seekers. This combination of challenging but rewarding access, stunning natural features, and proximity to major recreational areas makes Lincoln Creek a highly desirable, albeit adventurous, destination for Colorado residents looking for an authentic dispersed camping experience in a truly spectacular part of the state.
The feeling of being immersed in nature, with the convenience of being relatively close to established towns like Aspen and Buena Vista, strikes a perfect balance for many local outdoor enthusiasts. This unique blend of wilderness and accessibility ensures that Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground remains a favored spot for those in the know.

Lincoln Creek Dispersed Campground Reviews
BeautifulBe aware that you can’t drive through until June 21
Jun 08, 2025 · Claire MorrisAmazing dispersed campsite just 20 minutes down the road from Aspen. There is a river that runs through and from a few of the sites you are able to hear the water rushing which is lovely. When camping here you are very close to excellent climbing and a dozen awesome trailheads. Not sure if this is true for all but our site was very dusty/ashy so I would recommend some extra wipes for sure. Also, 4wd is highly recommended or at least a larger vehicle as the road down to the dispersed sites is very rocky.
Jul 27, 2019 · Maren BurnsI love this dispersed camping area. I stayed at site 7 which is right across from a waterfall and gorge. The wildflowers were amazing (mid July).I recommend only going with 4x4, good clearance, strong car, and really great tires. I had a tire blowout here and it isn't an area mobile mechanics / tow companies will service.Still, i love the area and highly recomend it!
Jul 22, 2024 · Rebekah El MaskalyNice campground with great views. Road wasn't too bad when I was there in early September.
Oct 20, 2017 · Tom ReplogleIt isn't dispersed, and they expect you to pay $25. Temperature was in the mid 30's, overnight, in the beginning of September. There are bears. The vault toilet smells like hell. The road leading to this site, and away from it in the same direction is treacherous. The only reason I drove 100 miles was because it is advertised as dispersed, and Colorado rest areas discriminate against anyone not driving a semi truck limiting the stay to an absurd 3 hours. A beautiful state; horrible government. Drive around it, if you are trying to pass through.
