Lake Fork Campground

US-50, Gunnison, CO 81230, USA

4.0
The spot is incredible, but 24$ just for the view sounds a bit expensive… there was only one restroom opened and it was smelling like no other restroom I have ever encountered in my life 🤢Also, there was no water, no shower or anything. So, I understand that we are early in the season, but maybe you could offer a better price as we can’t enjoy all the amenities the campground usually offers. We went kayaking on the lake though, and it was awesome. - Alice Roussy

Lake Fork Campground Introduce

For Colorado locals looking to immerse themselves in the stunning beauty of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, Lake Fork Campground offers a prime lakeside camping experience. Situated directly on the shores of the vast Blue Mesa Reservoir, Colorado’s largest body of water, this campground provides an exceptional base for aquatic adventures and enjoying breathtaking high-desert landscapes. While reviews offer a mixed perspective on certain aspects, the undeniable allure of the location – with its incredible views and access to water recreation – makes Lake Fork a perennial draw for those who love to explore our state's majestic outdoors.

Lake Fork Campground caters to a variety of campers, from those with RVs seeking a spot near the water to tent campers looking for a scenic overnight. It's part of the National Park Service's managed campgrounds within Curecanti, meaning it operates under federal guidelines and aims to provide a structured yet natural camping environment. Understanding its amenities and what to expect, especially during the early and late seasons, is key to a rewarding visit. Despite some past challenges regarding seasonal services and host availability, the core appeal of Lake Fork remains its direct connection to Blue Mesa Reservoir and the panoramic beauty that surrounds it. For Coloradans eager to fish, boat, or simply take in expansive reservoir views, Lake Fork Campground promises a memorable escape.

Lake Fork Campground is conveniently located on US-50, Gunnison, CO 81230, USA. Its exact position is 27 miles west of Gunnison on CO Highway 92, near the intersection with U.S. Highway 50. This places it directly on the shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir, which is a significant advantage for those primarily interested in water-based recreation. The campground is nestled within the Curecanti National Recreation Area, a vast and diverse landscape managed by the National Park Service.

Accessibility to Lake Fork Campground is generally straightforward via paved highways. US-50 is a major route connecting Gunnison and Montrose, making the campground relatively easy to reach for both RVs and cars. The campground itself has paved parking spurs for sites, which contributes to easier access and setup. However, it's worth noting that "U.S. 50 has some tight curves coming from the east," and construction might occur, potentially requiring alternate routes or causing delays, as noted by some past visitors. While the campground is readily accessible, it is still in a high-elevation, semi-arid environment characterized by sagebrush and occasional trees, offering expansive views rather than dense forest cover directly at most sites. This makes it an ideal spot for those who appreciate open vistas and convenient road access to the reservoir. The nearby Lake Fork Marina is adjacent to the campground, providing an easy boat ramp for launching watercraft onto Blue Mesa Reservoir. This direct access to the water is a primary draw for boaters and anglers.

Lake Fork Campground, while offering essential amenities, operates with a focus on providing a foundational camping experience within a stunning natural setting. Campers should be aware of seasonal variations in service availability.

  • Potable (Drinking) Water: Potable water is available seasonally. It's crucial to verify if water services are active, especially during early or late season visits, as some reviews indicate it may be turned off.
  • Flush Toilets (Seasonal) & Vault Toilets: Flush toilets are typically available during summer months. Vault toilets are generally accessible year-round. However, reviews indicate that even during peak seasons, some restrooms might be locked or unmaintained, so preparedness is advised.
  • No Showers: It's important to note that Lake Fork Campground does not offer showers. Concession-run coin-operated showers may be available nearby at the Elk Creek marina, but not directly at the campground.
  • Paved Parking Spurs: All sites generally have a paved parking spur, which can accommodate tents to large RVs.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings/Grills: Each site is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill grate, perfect for outdoor cooking and campfires (always check for fire bans).
  • Dump Station: A dump station for RVs is available seasonally, which is a valuable amenity for longer stays.
  • Trash Collection: Trash collection is provided seasonally, with dumpsters available for waste disposal.
  • Limited Cell Service: Cell service is typically poor or limited in the area. This can be seen as a feature for those wanting to disconnect, but plan accordingly for emergencies or communication needs.
  • Reservable Sites: Sites in the Upper and Middle sections of the campground are reservable through Recreation.gov from mid-May to mid-September. The Lower Section operates on a first-come, first-served basis.

Lake Fork Campground boasts several appealing features and highlights, making it a popular choice despite some noted operational challenges.

  • Stunning Blue Mesa Reservoir Views: The primary highlight is undoubtedly the picturesque views of Blue Mesa Reservoir and the surrounding canyon walls. Many sites offer direct views of the lake, providing a beautiful backdrop for your camping experience.
  • Direct Water Access & Boating Opportunities: The campground's proximity to the Lake Fork Marina and boat ramp provides unparalleled access for boating, kayaking, jet skiing, water skiing, and fishing on Colorado's largest body of water.
  • Excellent Fishing: Blue Mesa Reservoir is renowned for its Kokanee Salmon fishery and offers excellent trout fishing opportunities. A fish cleaning station is provided for anglers.
  • Accessibility for RVs and Tents: With paved spurs, the campground can accommodate a range of camping setups, from large RVs to tent campers in designated walk-in sites.
  • Proximity to Curecanti NRA Attractions: It serves as a great base for exploring the broader Curecanti National Recreation Area, including nearby hiking trails like the Curecanti Creek Trail and Hermit's Rest Trail, and driving scenic routes.
  • Amphitheater: An amphitheater is available seasonally, potentially hosting ranger programs or evening gatherings.
  • Wildlife Viewing: The semi-arid shrubland surrounding the campground offers opportunities for bird watching, including black-billed magpies, and spotting Gunnison's Prairie Dogs.
  • Secluded Tent Sites: While some RV sites are close together, "walk in sites have a great view and are still close to parking lot and bathrooms," providing a potentially more private tent camping experience.

Despite some sites potentially feeling like "parking lots" to some, the trade-off for stunning views and immediate proximity to the water is often worth it for boaters and anglers. For Colorado families and individuals who prioritize getting out on the water and soaking in vast, open landscapes over dense forest camping or luxurious amenities, Lake Fork Campground offers a compelling and authentic Colorado experience. It’s a place where the grandeur of the reservoir dominates, providing endless opportunities for cherished outdoor memories, reminding us why we love living in this beautiful state.
