Please keep in mind that as a rustic campground, its charm lies in its simplicity. It's not about luxury; it's about the pure joy of the outdoors. This is a great choice for those who value peace and quiet and are prepared for a more self-sufficient camping trip. Let's get into the specifics of what makes this a hidden gem for Michigan's outdoor enthusiasts.
Indian Reserve Campground is located in Wilson Township, Michigan, with an address of 2C9R+GC, Wilson Township, MI 49707, USA. It is conveniently positioned near the city of Alpena, making it an accessible option for those looking to stay close to civilization while still feeling immersed in the wild. The campground’s setting is a major part of its appeal, with several sites positioned directly on the riverfront. This provides campers with stunning views and easy access to the water.
As a state forest campground, it is designed for a more rustic experience. The road leading to the campground is a gravel road, and while generally accessible, it's always wise to be prepared for the conditions, especially after heavy rain. On-site parking is available for all campers. While the campground is wheelchair-accessible for vehicles in a dedicated car park, campers should be aware that the terrain within the sites themselves can be uneven, as is typical for a natural, unpaved environment. The proximity to Indian Reserve Road means you might hear some vehicle noise, but it is generally not disruptive to the peaceful atmosphere.
The location is particularly ideal for those looking to explore the Alpena area. It's just a ten-minute drive from the city, allowing for easy resupply runs or a quick trip into town for a meal. This balance of secluded nature and nearby amenities is a significant benefit for many visitors.
Indian Reserve Campground operates on a basic, no-frills model, providing the fundamental services needed for a comfortable outdoor experience. These are not the extensive amenities you might find at a private resort, but they are exactly what a true rustic camper needs. The campground is well-suited for both tent campers and those with small RVs or trailers.
- RV water hookup: The campground offers an RV water hookup, which is a convenient feature for those traveling in recreational vehicles. It’s important to note that this is a basic hookup, and additional services like sewer or electric are not available.
- Running water: A hand pump is available for potable water. According to some visitors, the pump works year-round. While the water may have a slight sulfur taste, it is safe to drink and a reliable source of hydration for your trip.
- Toilet facilities: Pit toilets are available on-site. As a rustic campground, these are maintained by the state and may not be as pristine as flush toilets in a modern facility. It's always a good idea to come prepared with your own supplies.
- On-site parking: Dedicated parking is provided, with a wheelchair-accessible car park area as well, ensuring that all visitors have a place to park their vehicles.
Despite its basic nature, Indian Reserve Campground boasts several features that make it a standout choice for local campers seeking a tranquil experience.
- Beautiful Riverfront Sites: Roughly half of the ten available sites are located directly on the riverfront. This is a major draw for those who love the water and want to wake up to a scenic view. The proximity to the river also makes it easy to launch a canoe or kayak right from the campground.
- Ample Privacy: The campground features a mix of sites. Some are close together, but others offer a generous amount of spacing, creating a secluded feel. Surrounding forest vegetation provides a natural barrier between campsites, giving you the privacy you desire.
- Tent and Small RV Friendly: The campground is versatile enough to accommodate different types of campers. While it is known as a great spot for tent camping, especially as one of the nicer rustic options near Alpena, a number of sites can also handle trailer campers or small RVs.
- Good for Kids: This is a safe and natural environment that is good for kids. It allows them to explore the outdoors, learn about nature, and enjoy classic camping activities. It's a great place to introduce younger generations to the joys of rustic camping.
- Kayak and Canoe Launch: The river provides a fantastic opportunity for water sports. You can easily put a kayak or canoe in at the on-site launch and explore the beautiful river. This is a highly recommended activity for anyone visiting the campground.

This is a place for the camper who values simplicity and a true connection to nature. While it may not have all the modern conveniences, that's precisely its strength. It forces you to unplug and appreciate the natural beauty around you.
One of the most compelling reasons to choose this campground is its stunning riverfront setting. Waking up to the serene view of the river and having the ability to put in a canoe or kayak just steps from your site is an experience that many campgrounds simply cannot offer. The spacious and private sites also provide a level of seclusion that is hard to find, even in other state parks.
It is important to manage expectations; this is a place for the seasoned and prepared camper. Reviews from visitors often highlight the beautiful location and the potential of the space. While it may require some self-sufficiency, such as cleaning up your own site, the rewards are immense. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a very very basic rustic campground on the river. Sadly, over the years, this has not been taken very well care of. So expect to clean up your own campsite (I won't even say what we had to clean up near the fire pit). It is a beautiful area, the cost to camp here is high considering it's not maintained well. Some of the sites are really nice and big. It has pit toilets, that again, aren't in the best of shape. This could be an amazing campground with a bit of care. In the spring watch for ticks. When it's humid, lots of mosquito's being this close to the river. A few years back the select cut trees near here, so you do hear Indian Reserve road more now then you used to, but it's not bad. I don't know what the rule for generators are here, but we do run them during the day sometimes, but we try not to run them at night (unless we are the only ones there). You can put a kayak or canoe in at the launch and the river here really is beautiful. I just wish it was better cared for.
January 22 · Jessica “SnowDogs” HatchA basic 10-site rustic state forest campground with a handful of sites offering ample spacing from neighboring sites and surrounding forest vegetation to provide privacy. Several sites are more open to neighboring sites for those who are looking for this.Roughly half the sites here are directly on the riverfront.Hand pump seems to work year-round with potable water, though it tasted slightly of sulfur. This is one of the nicer rustic tent camping options near Alpena, just ten minutes outside of town. The campground would also work with trailer campers or small RVs in at least some of its sites.

June 27 · Jennifer MushungMy father took me here as a boy, and I've been taking my son here since he was born basicly. Great place. Beware of the wildlife. River access. Great memories for me here.
