Hunts Bluff Campground Introduce
For those North Carolina residents who cherish the tranquility of nature, the sound of a gentle river, and the call of the wild, there’s a hidden gem nestled along the banks of the Black River: Hunts Bluff Campground. Located in the charming community of Kelly, NC, this campground offers a unique and serene escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It’s a destination that perfectly caters to those seeking a quiet, intimate camping experience, particularly if your passion lies in paddling the pristine waters of one of North Carolina’s most unique rivers.
Hunts Bluff Campground isn’t your sprawling resort-style park; it's a smaller, more focused retreat designed for genuine outdoor enthusiasts. While it provides the essential amenities for a comfortable stay, its true appeal lies in its immediate access to the natural wonders of the Black River. Imagine waking up, stepping out of your RV or tent, and within moments, launching your kayak directly into a timeless waterway where ancient cypress trees stand guard. This focus on river access and a peaceful environment sets Hunts Bluff apart as a truly special place for locals across North Carolina looking for an authentic and uncrowded natural experience.
Hunts Bluff Campground is conveniently located at 282 Hunts Bluff Rd, Kelly, NC 28448, USA. This address places it squarely in southeastern North Carolina, within easy reach for residents across the state. For those traveling from major population centers like Wilmington, Fayetteville, or even Raleigh and Charlotte, the journey to Kelly is manageable, offering a relatively short drive to a truly secluded natural setting.
The campground’s prime location directly on the Black River is its most significant asset. This offers immediate and unparalleled access to one of North Carolina's ecological treasures, renowned for its old-growth cypress trees and pristine, dark water. While the campground offers a feeling of remoteness and wilderness, it remains accessible via well-maintained roads. However, it's worth noting, as some visitors have pointed out, that the driveway entrance can present a slight challenge for very large RVs (e.g., 40-foot fifth wheels) due to a sharp cut, potentially causing the trailer to bank hard. Smaller RVs, pop-ups, and tents will find it easily navigable. Despite this minor consideration for larger rigs, the overall accessibility makes Hunts Bluff Campground an excellent option for North Carolinians looking to quickly immerse themselves in nature without extensive travel. The peaceful rural setting ensures a quiet escape, far from highway noise, allowing for true relaxation and enjoyment of the natural surroundings.
Full Hookup (FHU) RV Sites: Hunts Bluff Campground provides full hookup sites, meaning each site includes connections for water, sewer, and electricity (30/50 amp service). This is a significant convenience for RV campers, ensuring a comfortable and self-sufficient stay without the need for frequent trips to dump stations or water fill-ups.
High-Speed Wi-Fi: Despite its natural and somewhat secluded setting, the campground offers reliable high-speed Wi-Fi access. This is a considerable advantage for guests who wish to stay connected, work remotely, or simply stream entertainment during their downtime.
Kayak Launch: A key feature and highlight for many visitors is the direct kayak launch accessible from the campsites. This allows paddlers to easily drag their kayaks to the river and embark on an adventure along the Black River right from their site.
Fishing Access: With the Black River literally at your doorstep, guests have excellent opportunities for fishing. Whether casting a line from the bank or from a small boat, the river is known for its diverse fish population.
Flat, Gravel Sites: The campsites are generally flat and covered with gravel, providing a stable and level surface for parking RVs or setting up tents. This attention to site preparation contributes to a more comfortable camping experience.
Basic Amenities: While not an exhaustive list of luxury amenities, the campground focuses on providing the essential services needed for a pleasant and functional camping trip, ensuring water, electricity, and sewer hookups are reliable.
Quiet Environment: The campground prides itself on being a small, quiet campsite. This makes it an ideal choice for those seeking peace and solitude, away from the noise and crowds often found at larger, more bustling parks.
Direct Black River Access: This is undoubtedly the crowning jewel of Hunts Bluff Campground. Guests have the unique opportunity to launch kayaks, canoes, or small boats directly from the campground into the legendary Black River. This offers immediate access to a truly wild and ancient waterway.
Exceptional Paddling Experience: The Black River is celebrated for its pristine condition and ancient bald cypress trees, some of which are thousands of years old. Paddling upstream from the campground often reveals stretches of river devoid of any man-made structures, providing an immersive wilderness experience that is increasingly rare to find. This makes it a mecca for wilderness paddling enthusiasts.
Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The undisturbed nature of the Black River means abundant wildlife. Paddlers and campers alike can often spot various bird species, river otters, turtles, and other native North Carolina fauna in their natural habitat.
Serene and Peaceful Atmosphere: Unlike many large campgrounds, Hunts Bluff offers a quiet and tranquil environment. This is perfect for campers looking to unwind, read a book, enjoy nature's sounds, or simply relax without distractions.
Affordable Full Hookup Sites: Visitors frequently praise the value offered at Hunts Bluff, particularly for its full hookup sites. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious RVers who still desire essential amenities.
Family-Friendly (for those seeking quiet): While not boasting a playground or traditional resort amenities, the calm environment and opportunities for outdoor exploration (like paddling and fishing) make it suitable for families who appreciate quieter, nature-focused activities.
Spacious Enough Sites: Although some reviewers note the sites are "a little close," they are generally considered "large enough" to ensure privacy and prevent campers from having to traverse a neighbor's space to access their hookups or amenities.
As a smaller, more specialized campground focused on delivering a quality experience rather than high-volume traffic, Hunts Bluff Campground may not always advertise extensive, complex promotional schemes in the way larger resort campgrounds might. Their pricing is often already considered very competitive for the amenities and unique access they offer. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on any available promotions, special rates for extended stays, or off-season discounts, prospective campers in North Carolina are strongly encouraged to contact Hunts Bluff Campground directly. They can provide details on daily, weekly, or any potential monthly rates, and inform you if they have any seasonal offers, first-time visitor incentives, or discounts for specific groups. Given the intimate nature of the campground, direct communication ensures you receive the most precise information tailored to your potential stay.

For North Carolina residents, Hunts Bluff Campground is more than just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a gateway to an unparalleled natural experience right in your backyard. Its primary suitability for locals stems from several key factors. First, its relatively central location in southeastern NC makes it an accessible weekend escape for much of the state, allowing you to quickly transition from your daily routine to peaceful riverside tranquility. You don't need to embark on a cross-state journey to find true wilderness here.
Secondly, for those who value quiet, natural settings over bustling resort amenities, Hunts Bluff is a perfect match. Many North Carolinians seek out serene environments, and the Black River, with its ancient cypress trees and undisturbed stretches, provides exactly that. The direct access for kayaking and fishing means that outdoor enthusiasts can indulge in their passions immediately upon arrival, experiencing a unique ecosystem that is a true gem of our state. The high-speed Wi-Fi, while a modern convenience, doesn't detract from the natural feel; rather, it offers the flexibility to stay connected if needed without compromising the quiet ambiance.
Finally, the strong emphasis on full hookup sites and well-maintained gravel pads demonstrates an understanding of what RV campers need for a comfortable stay, all at a reasonable price point. This combination of affordability, essential amenities, and direct access to an ecologically significant river makes Hunts Bluff Campground an ideal and recurring destination for North Carolina locals seeking a genuine, quiet, and enriching outdoor adventure close to home. It’s a testament to the diverse and beautiful landscapes our state offers, proving that sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the most unassuming places.

Hunts Bluff Campground Reviews
The price was right for a FHU site. Short stay. The water is right there for boating and fishing. The sites are somewhat close together but large enough you're not walking thru the neighbors site to go dump your tanks.Negative for larger RV, we have a 40', and making the cut in the driveway had our 5th wheel banking hard. The back bed rails were pushing right up into the trailer from the angle. Same on the way out. If something can be done about that, this place will be more big rig friendly.
Apr 05, 2025 · Adam VengroffThis a a great spot especially if you like kayaking. The basic amenities are great regarding 30/50 amp and s/w and has great high speed WiFi. It's a small quiet campsite. The spaces are a little close but otherwise flat with nice gravel. What makes this place special is it's proximity to launch ones kayak to paddle the Black River. There is a launch that I could drag my kayak to right from my campsite. Once on the river all I can say is wow. Once leaving the launch I paddled up stream and did not see one man made structure and only ran into one other boater in my two times on the river. So if wilderness paddling is your thing definitely spend some time here.
Nov 02, 2024 · Jon WallachThis Campground was perfect for my husband who travels for work. It's a small quaint ,quiet and safe Campground. The owner was super helpful with all my questions! I would highly recommend this campground.
Oct 24, 2024 · CarrieAnnStayed here for over a year, very quiet and peaceful. Clean and convenient. All campsites are level and easy to get in and out of. Campground owner was great, really looks after the place, I was out of town when the temp dropped this past winter and he made the drive in to disconnect the water to my camper so the lines didn’t freeze. Easy to get ahold of and very accommodating. Would highly recommend.
