Honeymoon Campground

Winthrop, WA 98862, USA

4.0
Camped June 26-30, 2022 Sunday through Friday. Lots of mosquitoes and flies but overall, very quiet and secluded campground in bear country. Besides squirrels, birds, and ants - just a deer and no bear encounters. The best site would be 5 and the worst are 2 and 3.Site 1: By vault toilet, best shadeSite 2: No shadeSite 3: No shadeSite 4: Water access, no shadeSite 5: Water access, great shadeHad the whole site pretty much to ourselves except day of arrival and day of leaving. Very well maintained roads and sites. The couple volunteers came every other day and were extremely friendly and warned us of possible bear encounters (though not a single bear showed up). There's a trailhead at the end of the NF road up north which you can drive up to. Also, this area had been engulfed with wildfire back in 2021 so it's still recovering from that. You will pass along a graveyard of trees (which made me sad).Pack in, pack out. No garbage disposal. Town of Winthrop is only a couple minutes away. There is no service at this site. Fee is $10 per day, first come-first served. On the rare occasion campground is full, many disperse sites are along the road. Have fun! - Kimmy Garcia (Kimmy)

Honeymoon Campground Introduce

For those of us in Washington who truly cherish the raw, untamed beauty of our state's wilderness, Honeymoon Campground near Winthrop offers a quintessential and deeply rewarding camping experience. This isn't your average bustling RV park; it’s a tranquil, secluded retreat designed for those who seek peace, quiet, and a genuine connection with nature. Nestled in a beautiful area, surrounded by the recovering landscape of a past wildfire and graced by the gentle flow of Dightmile Creek, Honeymoon Campground embodies the spirit of traditional, off-grid camping that many Washingtonians hold dear.

What makes Honeymoon Campground particularly appealing for locals is its emphasis on seclusion and a "pack in, pack out" philosophy, promoting a profound respect for the natural environment. While it's located in "bear country" (a common and exciting aspect of our state's wild spaces, managed with proper food storage), the overall atmosphere is remarkably "quiet and secluded." Visitors often find they have the "whole site pretty much to ourselves" during non-peak times, allowing for an undisturbed immersion in the sounds and sights of the forest. This provides a rare opportunity to truly disconnect from urban noise and reconnect with the rhythms of the wild.

Moreover, the campground's dedication to being "first come-first served" aligns with a more adventurous spirit, inviting spontaneous trips and a sense of discovery. It’s a place where friendly volunteers ensure the roads and sites are "very well maintained," and where the recovering landscape tells a story of resilience and renewal. For Washington residents eager to embrace authentic wilderness camping without venturing too far off the beaten path, Honeymoon Campground promises an experience that is both invigorating and deeply peaceful, making it a standout choice for those who truly love our state's natural treasures.

Honeymoon Campground is situated near Winthrop, Washington, with its address being Winthrop, WA 98862, USA. This places it within the stunning Methow Valley region, known for its rugged mountains, clear rivers, and vast forested areas. Its proximity to Winthrop, a charming Western-themed town, means that essential services and a taste of local culture are just a "couple minutes away" by car, offering a convenient balance of seclusion and accessibility.

Accessibility to Honeymoon Campground is generally good, with "very well maintained roads and sites." This ensures that the drive in is relatively smooth for most vehicles. While the specific type of road surface (paved vs. gravel) isn't detailed, the "well maintained" description suggests it's navigable. The campground is located on a National Forest (NF) road, with a trailhead at its northern end, indicating a clear route.

It's important for locals to be aware of the natural recovery from past wildfires. The area "had been engulfed with wildfire back in 2021," and visitors "will pass along a graveyard of trees." This is a significant aspect of the landscape and a poignant reminder of nature's cycles in Washington. Despite this, the campground itself offers "great shade" at specific sites, demonstrating recovery and continued usability. While the campground offers a secluded experience, it's worth noting there is "no service at this site," meaning cell phone coverage is unavailable. This encourages a true disconnect, though for emergencies, the nearby town of Winthrop offers connectivity. For those who prioritize off-grid immersion, this lack of service is often considered a feature, not a bug, making it a prime spot for a digital detox in the heart of Washington's wilderness.

Honeymoon Campground provides essential services and amenities geared towards a rustic yet comfortable camping experience, emphasizing self-sufficiency and respect for the natural environment.

  • Vault Toilets: The campground features vault toilets for basic sanitation needs, providing a necessary facility for campers.

  • Water Access: At least some sites, specifically sites 4 and 5, offer "Water access," which is a significant convenience for campers needing water for drinking, cooking, and cleaning.

  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: While not explicitly stated for every site in the provided text, standard US Forest Service campgrounds typically include picnic tables and fire rings at each designated campsite, which are essential for outdoor cooking and gathering (always check for current fire restrictions).

  • First-Come, First-Served: All campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. This means no reservations are needed, offering flexibility for spontaneous trips, though it's advisable to arrive early during popular periods.

  • Volunteer Camp Hosts: Friendly and helpful volunteer camp hosts are present, coming "every other day." They maintain the roads and sites and provide valuable local information and warnings, such as about potential bear encounters, enhancing safety and visitor experience.

  • Affordable Daily Fee: Camping at Honeymoon Campground costs an affordable "$10 per day," making it a budget-friendly option for extended stays.

It's crucial to note the "pack in, pack out" policy, as there is "No garbage disposal" on site. Campers are responsible for taking all their trash with them, reinforcing the leave-no-trace ethic. Additionally, there is "no service at this site," meaning no cell phone coverage, which should be factored into planning.

Honeymoon Campground is celebrated for several distinctive features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for those seeking a genuine wilderness experience in Washington.

  • Secluded and Quiet Atmosphere: The campground is consistently described as "very quiet and secluded," offering a peaceful escape from crowds. Visitors often have the "whole site pretty much to ourselves," fostering a sense of deep tranquility.

  • Bear Country Experience: Located in "bear country," the campground offers an authentic wild experience, reminding campers of the importance of proper food storage (though no bear encounters were reported in the review).

  • Strategic Site Selection for Shade and Water: Specific sites offer unique advantages. Site 1 is "By vault toilet, best shade." Site 5 provides "Water access, great shade," making it highly desirable, while sites 2, 3, and 4 are noted for lacking shade but site 4 has water access. This allows campers to choose based on their preferences.

  • Well-Maintained Infrastructure: Despite its rustic nature, the "very well maintained roads and sites" ensure a comfortable and accessible experience within the campground.

  • Proximity to Dightmile Creek: The campground features a "Nice spot on Dightmile creek," offering opportunities for creek-side relaxation and potentially fishing (though not explicitly stated for fishing in the creek, it's a common activity in such areas).

  • Nearby Hiking Opportunities: A "trailhead at the end of the NF road up north" provides direct access to hiking, allowing campers to explore the surrounding forest. This indicates opportunities for moderate to challenging hikes, depending on the trail system.

  • Wildfire Recovery Landscape: The area is "still recovering from" a 2021 wildfire, presenting a unique landscape feature. While some might find the "graveyard of trees" sad, it also offers a powerful visual of nature's resilience and ecological processes.

  • Dispersed Camping Options: On the "rare occasion campground is full, many disperse sites are along the road," providing alternative camping opportunities for those who arrive without a secured spot.

These features collectively define Honeymoon Campground as a true wilderness retreat, offering a blend of natural beauty, tranquility, and authentic outdoor challenges.

The campground's location in a recovering wildfire area offers a unique perspective on ecological resilience, a powerful visual that resonates with our state's natural history. Despite the lack of cell service (which many consider a benefit for a true digital detox) and the presence of insects (a natural part of wilderness that can be managed with repellent), the overall experience at Honeymoon Campground provides profound value. For a mere "$10 per day," it delivers an unparalleled, secluded escape into the genuine Washington wilderness, making it a perfect spot for locals seeking peace, adventure, and an unvarnished connection with nature.
