Recently visited and had an amazing experience! The campground is right as you enter Yosemite National Park and super easy to locate, plus it's only about a 30 minute drive from Yosemite Valley. The camp hosts were absolutely amazing, both welcoming and super knowledgable while we were there June 20-23. There is no phone service, but that's what we hope for and expect while camping. It was the perfect way to unplug. We had a hike in campsite and we will 100% be doing that again, not a super far hike and you get to be a little bit further away from other camp sites.Absolutely love this place and was really sad to leave! We will definitely be back and will recommend to others. - Autumn Pressley

Hodgdon Meadow Campground Introduce

For Californians dreaming of escaping the daily grind and immersing themselves in the grandeur of nature, Hodgdon Meadow Campground offers an exceptional opportunity right at the doorstep of one of the world's most iconic natural wonders: Yosemite National Park. Located just inside the Big Oak Flat Entrance, this campground is more than just a place to pitch your tent or park your RV; it's a strategic basecamp for exploring the vast wilderness, towering sequoias, and breathtaking vistas that define Yosemite. Whether you're a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or a family looking to introduce your kids to the magic of the Sierra Nevada, Hodgdon Meadow provides a friendly and functional gateway to adventure.

Many Californians cherish the chance to unplug and reconnect with nature, and Hodgdon Meadow delivers precisely that. Without phone service, it’s the perfect environment to truly disconnect from digital distractions and immerse yourself in the sounds and sights of the forest. Guests consistently praise the welcoming atmosphere and knowledgeable staff who are often on-site, ready to assist and share insights about the park. If you're planning a trip to Yosemite, especially if you're coming from the San Francisco Bay Area or other parts of Northern California, Hodgdon Meadow stands out as a convenient, quiet, and well-maintained option for your stay.

Location and Accessibility

Hodgdon Meadow Campground is perfectly situated at the western edge of Yosemite National Park, specifically on Big Oak Flat Rd, Groveland, CA 95321, USA. Its location is a significant advantage for Californians, especially those approaching Yosemite from the west, typically via Highway 120. Described by visitors as "right as you enter Yosemite National Park" and "super easy to locate," it serves as the closest campground spot if you are driving from major Northern California cities like San Francisco, being literally just five minutes from the entrance station.

While it offers immediate access to the park, its position also provides a balance of convenience and a sense of being 'away from it all.' From Hodgdon Meadow, Yosemite Valley, with its iconic landmarks such as El Capitan, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls, is approximately a 30 to 45-minute drive. This allows campers to easily access the valley's attractions during the day while returning to a quieter, less congested environment in the evenings. For those planning to explore the high country, including Tuolumne Meadows (when Tioga Road is open), the drive from Hodgdon Meadow is around 1 hour and 30 minutes, placing it within reasonable reach of diverse park experiences.

The Big Oak Flat Road is a well-maintained, paved route, making access straightforward for various types of vehicles, including RVs and trailers (with specific site length limits to consider). The presence of a gas station and a small general store approximately eight miles away at Crane Flat is a significant convenience, offering essential supplies without needing to leave the park entirely.

Services Offered

Hodgdon Meadow Campground provides a range of essential services designed to make your camping experience comfortable and safe within the wilderness setting of Yosemite. While it embraces the spirit of unplugging, it ensures key facilities are available.

  • Flush Toilets and Drinking Water: Unlike some more primitive campgrounds, Hodgdon Meadow offers clean bathrooms with flush toilets and potable drinking water throughout the campground. This is a significant convenience for campers, ensuring basic hygiene and hydration needs are met.
  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, perfect for meal preparation and outdoor dining, and a fire ring, allowing for enjoyable campfires (subject to park regulations and fire restrictions).
  • Bear-Resistant Food Lockers: Critically important in Yosemite, every campsite includes a bear-resistant food storage locker. These lockers, typically measuring 35"(D)x43"(W)x28"(H), are essential for safely storing all food, scented items, and anything that could attract wildlife. This helps protect both campers and Yosemite's bear population.
  • Dish Washing Spot: While not explicitly a "shower" facility, the availability of a dedicated dish washing spot (often near restrooms) is a noted convenience, as confirmed by visitor reviews, making cleanup easier.
  • Camp Hosts: The presence of "amazing, both welcoming and super knowledgeable" camp hosts contributes significantly to the positive experience. They are a valuable resource for information, assistance, and ensuring campground rules are followed.
  • Seasonal Availability: Hodgdon Meadow is generally open year-round, though sections may transition to first-come, first-served in the winter season, while group sites are closed during this period. Reservations are typically required from mid-April through mid-October due to high demand.
  • No Phone Service: As a highlight for those seeking a true disconnect, the absence of phone service is a feature, not a bug. It encourages campers to fully immerse themselves in their surroundings and enjoy an unplugged experience.

Features / Highlights

Hodgdon Meadow Campground offers several compelling features that make it a standout choice for Californians exploring Yosemite, balancing essential amenities with a natural, immersive experience.

  • Gateway Location: Its position at the Big Oak Flat entrance makes it the absolute closest campground for those driving from the San Francisco Bay Area and other parts of Northern California. This cuts down on travel time within the park, maximizing exploration opportunities.
  • Proximity to Yosemite Valley: Being only a 30 to 45-minute drive from Yosemite Valley means campers can easily access the park's most famous sights, hiking trails, and ranger programs daily, then retreat to a quieter setting.
  • Quiet and Relaxing Area: Visitors consistently describe Hodgdon Meadow as "super quiet and relaxing." This peaceful ambiance, particularly outside of the main valley hubbub, is highly valued by those seeking tranquility.
  • Hike-in Campsites: The option for "hike in campsites" is a significant highlight. As one reviewer noted, it allows you to be "a little bit further away from other camp sites," offering enhanced privacy and a more secluded feel without requiring a strenuous trek. These sites provide a unique blend of accessibility and immersion.
  • Clean Facilities: The consistent mention of "clean bathrooms" and a "dish washing spot" underscores the park's commitment to maintaining essential facilities to a high standard, contributing to a comfortable stay.
  • Friendly and Knowledgeable Staff: The "absolutely amazing" camp hosts are a standout feature, contributing significantly to a welcoming and supportive environment, ready to assist with any needs or questions.
  • Unplugged Experience: The lack of phone service is intentionally embraced by many campers as a highlight, providing the perfect opportunity to disconnect from digital life and fully engage with the natural environment.
  • Nearby Gas Station: The presence of a gas station just eight miles away at Crane Flat is a practical and highly appreciated convenience for travelers exploring a vast national park.
