Hither Hills Campground is spectacularly located at 164 Old Montauk Hwy, Montauk, NY 11954, USA. This address places it at the far eastern tip of Long Island, within the boundaries of Hither Hills State Park. Its position is undeniably one of its greatest assets, offering campers direct ocean access and proximity to the vibrant, yet laid-back, atmosphere of Montauk.
For New Yorkers traveling from New York City or other parts of Long Island, reaching Hither Hills involves a scenic drive. The primary route is to take the Long Island Expressway (I-495) eastbound to its terminus, then continue onto NY-27 East, which eventually becomes Montauk Highway. As you approach Montauk, you'll continue on Montauk Highway through the town, and Hither Hills Campground will be on your left, accessible directly from Old Montauk Highway. It's important to note that during peak summer months, traffic on NY-27 and through the Hamptons can be heavy, especially on Fridays and Sundays. Planning travel during off-peak hours (early morning or late evening) is highly recommended to ensure a smoother journey. While the drive can be long for those coming from upstate or western New York, the destination—a true oceanfront camping experience—is widely considered worth the effort. The campground's location also provides easy access to downtown Montauk for dining, shopping, and exploring iconic landmarks like the Montauk Lighthouse.
Hither Hills Campground provides a range of essential services and facilities designed to enhance the oceanfront camping experience, focusing on comfort and convenience in a natural setting.
Campsites for Tents and RVs: The campground accommodates both tent and RV campers. While specific electrical service upgrades for RV sites have been a point of feedback from some long-time visitors, the sites generally offer a basic setup suitable for various camping styles. It's always advisable to check specific hookup availability when booking.
Restrooms and Showers: Hither Hills is consistently praised for its clean and well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities. Access to hot showers is a significant convenience for campers, especially after a day at the beach.
Beach Access: A primary service highlight is the direct and easy access to the ocean beach. This includes a newly installed blue mat path that greatly improves accessibility for strollers, wheelchairs, and those carrying beach gear, making the journey from campsite to sand much more convenient.
Camp Store: While not always extensive, state park campgrounds typically offer a small camp store for basic necessities like firewood, ice, and some camping supplies.
Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for outdoor cooking and enjoying traditional campfire experiences.
Dump Station: For RV campers, a dump station is available on-site for waste disposal.
Fishing Access: The oceanfront location provides excellent opportunities for surfcasting.
Pet Policy: As part of the New York State Parks system, specific rules apply to pets. While generally allowed on leash in designated areas, they are typically not permitted on bathing beaches or in swimming areas.
Hither Hills Campground's unique features and highlights are what truly set it apart, making it a beloved destination for New Yorkers seeking a memorable coastal camping experience.
Direct Oceanfront Access: This is undoubtedly the crowning jewel of Hither Hills. Campers are mere steps from the Atlantic Ocean, allowing for spontaneous beach visits, morning walks along the shore, and convenient access for swimming and sunbathing.
Stunning Views: The campground offers beautiful views, particularly from the tent-only campsites which often boast direct vistas of the ocean. Waking up to the sunrise over the Atlantic is an unforgettable experience.
Blue Mat Beach Path: A significant accessibility enhancement, the blue mat path laid down to the beach makes it easier for everyone, including those with mobility challenges, strollers, or heavy gear, to reach the sand and water.
Hither Hills State Park Amenities: As part of a larger state park, campers have access to broader park features beyond the immediate campground. These may include:
- Hiking and Nature Trails: Explore the park's diverse landscapes, including woodlands, dunes, and unique geological formations, offering opportunities for walking and birdwatching.
- Fishing and Surfcasting: The ocean and nearby ponds within the park provide ample opportunities for fishing.
- Picnic Areas: Additional day-use picnic areas are available within the park.
Proximity to Montauk: The campground is just a short drive from the village of Montauk, offering access to its famous lighthouse, diverse restaurants, unique shops, fishing charters, and vibrant nightlife. This allows campers to enjoy a rugged outdoor experience while still having modern conveniences and entertainment nearby.
Wildlife Observation: The park's natural setting provides opportunities to observe local wildlife, including various bird species and marine life.
Serene Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, Hither Hills generally maintains a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, allowing campers to truly disconnect and enjoy the natural environment.
As a New York State Park campground, Hither Hills Campground's pricing and any special offers are typically managed by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. Direct, short-term promotional discounts (like "buy one night, get one free") are less common for state park campgrounds compared to privately owned ones. However, there are typically ways to find value and specific booking options:
New York State Parks Reservation System: Reservations are made through the central NYS Parks reservation system, which provides transparent pricing based on site type, time of year (peak vs. off-peak), and residency.
Off-Season Rates: While Hither Hills is extremely popular, especially in summer, rates may be slightly lower during the very early spring or late fall shoulder seasons (if open). It's crucial to check the official NYS Parks website for specific opening and closing dates and seasonal pricing tiers.
Empire Pass: For frequent visitors to New York State Parks, purchasing an Empire Pass can offer significant savings on vehicle entrance fees. While it doesn't directly discount camping rates, it eliminates daily parking fees at Hither Hills State Park and other state parks, which can add up over multiple visits.
Long-Term Stay Availability: While specific discounts for extended stays are not always advertised, booking for longer durations (e.g., a week) can sometimes offer a slightly better daily rate than multiple individual overnight bookings.
Given its immense popularity, especially for oceanfront sites, securing a reservation at Hither Hills Campground often requires booking well in advance, sometimes immediately when the reservation window opens. For the most accurate and up-to-date information on rates, availability, and specific booking procedures, always consult the official New York State Parks website or contact the campground directly.

Hither Hills Campground Reviews
Family has been staying here for years! Personally I’d love to see some upgrades to the sites in terms of electric service. Be aware cell phone service was minimal for Verizon users. They do keep the bathrooms and facilities clean. The beach access is great! They have a put a blue mat path down to the beach which makes access so much easier! We’ll be back again!
Jun 30, 2023 · Laura JohnsonThe absolute best campground. My boyfriend & I love MTK & always come to Hither Hills. The views are beautiful, especially the tent-only campsite. The staff do a great job at keeping the bathrooms & other facilities clean.
Feb 25, 2024 · Tiana SchwenkerI really enjoyed spending time on the beach here, although it had a litter problem just like many of the beaches in the area during tourist season LOLI spent some time picking up some of the litter and enjoyed a really nice sunset here :)- visited on August 3, 2021
Dec 07, 2022 · Wade WilliamsHands down one of my favorite camping experiences. Granted, It's not your typical campground and definitely a departure from anything you'd find up the Hudson. However, the proximity to the Ocean and all of Montauk's activities makes this an awesome weekend excursion every year.We usually set up camp in the pre-season (early May) and occasionally get hit with a little rough weather. But if you don't mind getting a bit wet (or sleeping in your car...), Hither Hills is definitely worth the visit.
