Gurnsey Creek Campground

CA-89, Hat Creek, CA 96040, USA

3.0
This is a good campground for a short visit. You are in between Lassen Volcanic National park and lake Almanor. The creek is year round but has no fish. You can go about 2 miles away and fish in Deer creek with better success. The vault toilets were clean and the water from the spigots was good. The campground is right next to the highway and you could hear and see traffic until around 9pm when it finally stopped. - Larry Biondolillo

Gurnsey Creek Campground Introduce

Hello, fellow California outdoor enthusiasts! Are you planning a quick getaway to explore the breathtaking volcanic landscapes of Lassen or enjoy the serene waters of Lake Almanor? If so, Gurnsey Creek Campground, nestled near Hat Creek, California, might be just the spot for your next adventure. This informative guide will provide you with a comprehensive overview of this campground, highlighting its convenience, amenities, and important considerations to ensure a pleasant and safe experience for all Californians looking to connect with nature.

Gurnsey Creek Campground is strategically positioned in Northern California, offering a convenient stop for those exploring the diverse attractions of the Lassen National Forest area. It provides a more basic, yet functional, camping experience, making it suitable for short visits where the primary goal is to be close to major recreational hubs. Many campers appreciate its straightforward approach, focusing on essential facilities while putting you right in the heart of prime outdoor territory.

One of its key appeals is its location as a direct link between two popular California destinations: Lassen Volcanic National Park to the north and the expansive Lake Almanor to the south. This makes Gurnsey Creek an ideal basecamp, allowing you to maximize your time exploring these iconic spots without lengthy commutes. Imagine spending your day hiking through unique volcanic terrain or enjoying water sports, and then returning to a readily accessible campsite to relax under a canopy of trees.

While it offers a rustic charm typical of a forest campground, it’s important for Californians to be aware of certain characteristics to ensure their expectations align with what Gurnsey Creek provides. It's a place for those who appreciate direct access to the wilderness and understand the nature of forest campgrounds. This guide aims to give you all the facts, enabling you to plan a safe and enjoyable short visit to this well-located California camping spot.

Location and Accessibility

Gurnsey Creek Campground is situated at CA-89, Hat Creek, CA 96040, USA. This places it within the beautiful Lassen National Forest, at an elevation of approximately 4,700 feet. Its location along California State Route 89 (also referred to as Highway 36 in this stretch) is a significant aspect of its accessibility.

The campground lies roughly midway between Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lake Almanor, making it a highly convenient stop for visitors exploring either or both of these popular destinations. Specifically, it's about 14 miles west of the town of Chester and Lake Almanor, and roughly 14 miles (or about 20 minutes) north of the southwest entrance to Lassen Volcanic National Park. This puts you close to the action without being directly inside the often-busier national park campgrounds.

Being right off a main highway offers excellent accessibility for all types of vehicles, including RVs and trailers (up to 60 feet). You won't encounter challenging dirt roads to reach the campground. However, this proximity to the highway also means that traffic noise can be audible, especially until around 9 PM when it tends to quiet down. This is a trade-off for the convenience of location. Despite the road noise, the campground is nestled in a mixed conifer forest with plenty of tall evergreens, providing a shaded and relatively natural ambiance. Its first-come, first-served policy for individual sites (though group sites are reservable) means flexibility for spontaneous trips, but arriving early during peak seasons is advisable.

Services Offered
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides vault toilets, which are noted by visitors to be clean and well-maintained.
  • Water Spigots/Drinking Water: Potable (drinking) water is available from spigots throughout the campground. There is also a water-filling station located at the campground entrance.
  • Individual Campsites: Gurnsey Creek offers dozens of individual campsites suitable for tent camping and RVs (no utility hookups). Each site typically includes a picnic table and a campfire ring with a grill.
  • Group Sites: Two reservable group sites are available, accommodating larger parties (up to 56 people for Group Site 1 and up to 112 people for Group Site 2). These group sites are reservable in advance through Recreation.gov.
  • Shade: The campground is nestled in a mixed conifer forest, providing ample shade from tall evergreens, which is particularly welcome during warm summer days.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table for convenient outdoor dining.
  • Fire Rings with Grills: Campfire rings with grills are provided at each site, allowing for safe and enjoyable campfires (subject to current fire restrictions; always check for campfire permits).

Ultimately, Gurnsey Creek Campground is a practical and well-located option for Californians who value convenience, appreciate basic yet clean facilities, and are eager to immerse themselves in the stunning beauty and diverse activities available in the Lassen National Forest and Lake Almanor region. It’s a smart choice for making the most of your time in this remarkable corner of our state.
