Location and Accessibility
Gothic Campground - Gunnison RD is beautifully situated along Co Rd 317, Crested Butte, CO 81224, USA. This location places it deep within the heart of the picturesque Elk Mountains, within the vast Gunnison National Forest, renowned for its dramatic landscapes and vibrant flora. For Colorado locals, the journey to Gothic Campground is an integral part of the adventure, offering stunning scenic drives through valleys and alongside towering peaks. The road leading to the campground, specifically County Road 317, is noted for its beauty, but also for its variable conditions.
While the road signage may suggest the need for 4x4 or high clearance vehicles beyond a certain point, many visitors in standard SUVs like a Forester have successfully navigated the route during warm, dry weather. However, it's crucial for visitors to be aware that road conditions can change rapidly with weather, and sections, particularly those leading directly into campsites, may have washouts or significant hills. Therefore, checking current road conditions and weather forecasts before embarking on the journey is highly recommended, especially if you are not accustomed to non-paved road driving.
Despite the adventurous drive, the accessibility is key to the campground's appeal, as it filters out some of the casual traffic, preserving the serene and untouched feel of the area. Gothic Campground is a dispersed-style camping area where permits and fees are managed at lower sites where vault toilets are located. This system requires campers to secure their permit ($18/night, cash/check only) and display it at their campsite, reinforcing a self-reliant and respectful approach to wilderness use. This level of access allows campers to truly immerse themselves in the surrounding natural environment, experiencing the raw beauty of the Colorado mountains.
The location also serves as an excellent base for exploring the iconic Crested Butte area, famous for its wildflowers in summer and stunning fall foliage. The changing leaves, often reaching peak color in late September, add another layer of beauty to the drive and the camping experience. Its relative proximity to Crested Butte town provides a convenient option for supplies or a meal, though it's remote enough to ensure a genuine wilderness escape. The journey to Gothic Campground is part of its allure, leading adventurers to a truly rewarding high-mountain experience.

Gothic Campground - Gunnison RD Reviews
A place that makes you thankful to be alive. Surrounded by colorful mountains and lush wetlands, campsite 12 is a literal dream. It has a nice shaded tree area where you can hang a hammock close to your fire ring. At the end, a large, flat, gravel tent pad. And all around you, nature is happening. I watched a small herd of deer wander across the mountainside in the morning while drinking my coffee. The drive in is great, and the road isn’t too bad, even after it warns you it needs 4x4/high clearance. For reference, I was in a Forester and didn’t go up to Emerald lake/ the pass. The road into the campsite had a little more washout and a significant hill leading to my site. I don’t do much non-paved road driving and usually occupy a passenger princess role, and it wasn’t scary at all; however, the weather was warm and dry. Make sure to grab a camping permit from the lower sites (also where the vault toilets are located), pay your camping fee down there (18$/night, cash/check only), and display your filled-out permit at your campsite. It’s early September, but leaves are already starting to change and once the sun goes down it’s COLD. I imagine in a week or two, the colors will be at peak. If you’re coming in on a weekend, get there early on a Friday otherwise everything will probably be taken already. I got in around 4-5p on a Friday and only a few sites weren’t claimed. If you’re lucky enough to get a spot, enjoy every moment. Just please follow leave no trace philosophy so this land can be enjoyed by you and others for years to come.
Sep 08, 2024 · Hannah SinclairOne of my favorite places for elopement photos in all of Crested Butte! I LOVED shooting around here, will be back!
Dec 30, 2024 · Through Lindsey's LensYou need bug spray if visiting in the summer. There's a nearby hike with an incline that is fairly steep initially. There's a parking spot with capacity for around 6-8 cars. The road to get here is gravel and passes through multiple tight turns. Camping prices as of August 2023 were ~$18 a night and fairly empty at the time we visited.
Aug 08, 2023 · Aydin PPerfect place to camp if you are going mountain biking in the area. Cool streams flowing and plenty of wildflowers to see if you catch them at the right time of year. Pack it in pack it out please. :)
Mar 06, 2020 · Mitchell PlathThis is my new favorite camping spot! The spots are a little close together so if you want more space I would not recommend it. It's absolutely beautiful here and the campsite is well kept
