More than just a place to pitch a tent or park an RV, this campground is deeply intertwined with the Friends of the Cheat organization, an environmental non-profit dedicated to restoring and preserving the Cheat River watershed. This connection imbues the campground with a special character, fostering a sense of shared purpose and a welcoming atmosphere that resonates deeply with locals who value both nature and community.
Nestled in the heart of the Cheat River region, the campground provides an incredibly affordable and accessible base for exploring one of West Virginia’s most beautiful and ecologically significant areas. It's a place where the sounds of nature blend with the laughter of new friends around a crackling campfire, creating memories that last a lifetime. Beyond its natural charm, Friends of the Cheat Campground is also known for hosting various events throughout the year, including popular music festivals like Cheatfest, which further cements its status as a vibrant hub for local culture and outdoor enthusiasm. For West Virginians looking for a genuine, community-driven camping experience that won't break the bank, this campground truly embodies the "Wild and Wonderful" spirit of our state.
Visitors consistently praise the friendly atmosphere and the ease of staying here, making it a recurring favorite for many. Whether you're planning a quiet weekend getaway, attending a lively music event, or even looking for a rustic yet beautiful venue for a special occasion, Friends of the Cheat Campground stands out as a distinctive and cherished part of the West Virginia outdoor landscape. Its commitment to affordability and community makes it particularly appealing to those who call the Mountain State home.
Friends of the Cheat Campground is conveniently located at 139 Beech Run Rd, Albright, WV 26519, USA. This address places it squarely within Preston County, in the northern part of West Virginia, a region renowned for its stunning natural beauty, outdoor recreational opportunities, and charming small towns. The campground's position near the Cheat River watershed provides immediate access to one of the state's most vital and picturesque river systems, known for its whitewater rafting, fishing, and scenic beauty.
Albright, while a smaller community, is well-connected to larger areas, making the campground quite accessible for West Virginians from various parts of the state. For those coming from Morgantown, the drive is relatively short, typically around 30-40 minutes, via WV-7 E. From further afield, such as Charleston, the state capital, or Huntington, the journey would involve a longer drive primarily via Interstate highways like I-79, before transitioning to more local routes. However, the scenic drive through West Virginia's rolling hills and forests is part of the adventure.
The local roads leading to Beech Run Rd are generally well-maintained, but as is common with many natural attractions in West Virginia, some portions might be narrower or wind through more rural settings, so drivers should be prepared for typical country road conditions. The relatively easy access from major population centers in northern West Virginia and even western Maryland or southwestern Pennsylvania makes Friends of the Cheat Campground a prime destination for a quick getaway or an extended stay. Its location acts as an excellent base for exploring nearby attractions such as Coopers Rock State Forest, multiple access points to the Cheat River, and the charming small towns that dot the landscape of Preston County. The ability to reach such a serene and community-focused camping spot without extensive travel is a significant advantage for local residents seeking outdoor adventures.

However, its affordability itself can be considered a perpetual "special offer" compared to many commercial campgrounds in West Virginia.
Given that Friends of the Cheat is an environmental non-profit organization, any "promotions" they offer might be tied to their mission or specific events rather than traditional commercial discounts. For example:

- Membership Benefits: As a "Friends of the Cheat" organization, it's possible they offer special camping rates or priority booking for members who contribute to their cause. This would be a common practice for non-profits seeking to encourage support.
- Group Rates: For larger groups, such as scout troops, youth organizations, or family reunions, campgrounds often provide reduced per-person or per-site rates. While not explicitly stated, this is a standard practice for many community-oriented camping facilities.
- Off-Season Affordability: Even if specific discounts aren't advertised, camping during the less popular shoulder seasons (early spring or late fall) might inherently be more affordable or offer a more tranquil experience at the standard low rates.

Friends of the Cheat Campground Reviews
Gorgeous facility. Beautiful place to have a wedding. And surprisingly the second best pit toilet's I have ever seen.
Sep 23, 2024 · Steve BradyI have been here several times over the last few years and I always love to come. Friends of the Cheat is a fantastic organization and staying at their campground is extremely affordable and easy. The people who I run into here are always friendly and great to get to know around the fire pits scattered around the campground. There are two permanent toilets onsite which while not the best bathrooms I’ve ever seen, are far better than the alternative and great to have. There are typically several music events hosted here throughout the year such as Cheatfest, hostedby Friends of the Cheat, and all of them are fun, especially with friends.
Aug 30, 2024 · Nicholas SmithCamped here while hiking the Allegheny Trail. Beautiful view if the Cheat River. This hiking trail actually goes right through the campground.
