Forest Boundary Campground

Pomeroy, WA 99347, USA

4.0
Nice campground. Dry camping, no hook up sites. There is a pedestal bathroom. There is a very nice ATV trail that leads from the campground into the national forest and some ATV riders are courteous and some are not. We have had them ride through our campsite and show off how loud their toy is. So if you are looking for peace and quiet, this may not be the campground for you. - R. UnSir

Forest Boundary Campground Introduce

For those of us living in Washington, the call of the great outdoors is an ever-present invitation. From the rugged coastlines to the majestic Cascade Mountains, our state offers a diverse range of natural escapes. Nestled in southeastern Washington, near the charming town of Pomeroy, lies Forest Boundary Campground. This unassuming yet highly functional campground provides a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy exploring on ATVs, to connect with the expansive beauty of the Umatilla National Forest.

Forest Boundary Campground isn't your typical full-hookup RV park; it's a dry-camping experience designed for those who appreciate a more rustic and self-sufficient approach to their adventures. It serves as a fantastic basecamp for exploring the surrounding national forest, offering direct access to trails and a chance to truly immerse yourself in the natural landscape. While it boasts a welcoming atmosphere for many, it's particularly suited for specific types of campers looking for a blend of quiet and adventure.

Forest Boundary Campground is conveniently located at Pomeroy, WA 99347, USA. This places it on the fringes of the Umatilla National Forest, providing direct access to a vast network of outdoor recreation. For locals in Washington, reaching the campground involves a scenic drive through the state's picturesque southeastern region. Pomeroy itself is a small, friendly community, offering a few essential services for campers before heading out to the forest.

The campground's name, "Forest Boundary," is quite literal; it sits right at the edge of the national forest, making it an ideal staging point for day trips or longer explorations. Its accessibility is a major plus for residents looking for a relatively straightforward drive to a remote-feeling natural setting. While it offers a sense of seclusion, it's not so remote that it becomes difficult to reach, striking a good balance for weekend warriors and longer-term campers alike. The drive provides glimpses of Washington's diverse landscapes, from rolling agricultural lands to the rising forested hills, building anticipation for the wilderness ahead.

Forest Boundary Campground provides essential services geared towards a comfortable, yet rustic, dry-camping experience. It's important to come prepared for a more self-reliant stay, as the campground focuses on fundamental amenities rather than extensive luxuries.

  • Dry Camping Sites: The campground offers sites specifically for dry camping, meaning there are no electrical, water, or sewer hookups available directly at the campsites. Campers should be prepared to be self-sufficient with their water and power needs.
  • Pedestal Bathroom: A central "pedestal" or vault toilet facility is available for campers' use. This type of restroom is common in national forest campgrounds, providing a basic, non-flush toilet option that is regularly maintained.
  • Fire Pits: Each campsite is typically equipped with a fire ring, allowing campers to enjoy campfires (when conditions permit and burn bans are not in effect). This is perfect for cooking or simply gathering around a warm glow in the evenings.
  • Picnic Tables: Most sites include a picnic table, offering a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, and other activities.
  • ATV Trail Access: A significant service, the campground provides direct access to ATV trails that lead into the national forest. This is a primary draw for many visitors.
  • Designated Parking: There are designated areas for parking vehicles and trailers, ensuring organized and safe access to campsites.

Forest Boundary Campground boasts several features and highlights that make it a distinctive choice for campers in Washington, particularly those seeking a blend of outdoor recreation and a more traditional camping experience.

  • Direct ATV Trailhead Access: One of the foremost highlights is the immediate access to ATV trails leading directly from the campground into the Umatilla National Forest. This makes it an unparalleled base for off-road vehicle enthusiasts looking to explore the extensive trail system.
  • Rustic Dry Camping Experience: For those who prefer a genuine outdoor adventure without the distractions of full hookups, this campground delivers. It encourages a back-to-basics approach to camping, appealing to self-reliant individuals and families.
  • Gateway to Umatilla National Forest: The campground serves as a prime entry point into the vast Umatilla National Forest, opening up opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, hunting, and general forest exploration beyond just ATV riding.
  • Quiet (Mostly) Solitude: While some past visitors have noted occasional noise from ATVs, especially from less courteous riders, many find periods of quiet solitude here, particularly if they understand the campground's primary appeal. For those seeking peace, weekdays or off-peak seasons might be ideal.
  • Family-Friendly for Adventurers: Families with ATVs or those who enjoy a more active, trail-based camping experience will find this campground suitable. It provides a shared environment for like-minded outdoor enthusiasts.
  • Scenic Southeastern Washington Location: The surrounding area offers beautiful natural scenery, providing a pleasant backdrop for camping and outdoor activities. It's a different landscape than the evergreen forests of Western Washington, offering a fresh perspective.
