Elkhead Overlook

TN-50, Pelham, TN 37366, USA

4.0
Absolutely breathtaking, can't get any better. Road up is ok, if you are a tourist like me, I found myself ending up on the craziest mountain roads that hauling a camper up was extremely scetchy. The travel up isn't bad and the property is amazing. I also ran into the problem of every campsite that I came to was overcrowded packed and your neighbor is within 5 ft. Only three possible sites here and we left out to have the place to ourselves. Absolutely would recommend coming to stay here, also I wanted to message the house and she immediately replied. - Danielle Ellery

Elkhead Overlook Introduce

Tennessee is a state celebrated for its majestic mountains, deep valleys, and winding rivers, offering an endless canvas for outdoor enthusiasts. For locals, finding that perfect secluded spot that offers both stunning natural beauty and a genuine escape from the everyday can be a true treasure. Elkhead Overlook, perched in Pelham, offers just such an experience. This unique campground provides an "absolutely breathtaking" vantage point, making it a standout destination for those who prioritize awe-inspiring views and a sense of peaceful solitude over crowded, amenity-rich parks. It's a testament to the raw, unspoiled beauty of the Tennessee landscape, inviting residents to discover a hidden gem where the primary attractions are the panoramas and the quiet communion with nature. For Michiganders seeking a truly memorable and visually spectacular camping experience without the typical crowds, Elkhead Overlook is an exceptional choice.

Elkhead Overlook is located on TN-50, Pelham, TN 37366, USA, though some sources specify the address as 9665 SR 50, Pelham, TN 37301, within the same general area. This strategic placement on the Cumberland Plateau offers campers "amazing views" overlooking Burroughs Cove and the Elk River. The campground's accessibility is generally good, with direct access from State Route 50. While the road up is described as "ok," campers, especially those hauling larger RVs, should be prepared for typical mountain roads. The entrance/driveway itself is on a small incline, recommending a slow and steady speed for vehicles with heavy campers. For those towing, a total vehicle and trailer length not exceeding 30 feet is recommended, though longer setups have been managed. Importantly, the location ensures that campers can feel truly immersed in the natural environment without being overly remote. For Tennesseans, it offers a relatively straightforward drive to a truly spectacular setting, making it a convenient escape from cities like Nashville (approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes southeast) or Chattanooga (around an hour's drive north). The ability to quickly reach such a stunning overlook is a major draw for local adventurers.

Elkhead Overlook offers a more rustic and private camping experience, focusing on essential amenities that support an immersive outdoor stay, particularly for RV and tent campers seeking a less crowded environment. While it emphasizes the natural setting and views, it does provide key conveniences. Based on available public data and customer reviews, the services offered include:

  • Limited Campsites for Privacy: The campground is noted for having "only three possible sites," contributing to a sense of privacy and seclusion often hard to find in larger campgrounds. This makes it ideal for those who prefer to "have the place to ourselves."
  • RV Hookups: Sites 1 and 2 are equipped with electrical boxes offering 20-amp, 30-amp, and 110-volt plugs, accommodating various RV needs.
  • No Potable Water On-Site: It is crucial to note that water is generally NOT available on site. Campers must plan on filling their water reservoirs PRIOR to arriving. During warmer months, a non-potable water container with a limited amount may be on site for general use, but it's not reliable for drinking.
  • Outhouse: An outhouse is available for all guests, providing basic restroom facilities.
  • Picnic Tables: Sites 1 and 2 are equipped with picnic tables for outdoor dining. Site 3 does not have one, and campers might need to be resourceful (e.g., using pallets).
  • Fire Rings: Designated fire pits are available at Sites 1 and 2 for campfires. Site 3 also has fire pit options.
  • Hard-Graveleled Sites: Sites 1 and 2 are hard graveled, suitable for RVs, but tent campers are advised to bring heavy-duty tent stakes, mats, and padding. Site 3 is a path with loose gravel and rocks.
  • Self-Serve / Unmanned: The site operates on a self-serve basis, meaning there is no manned front desk. Information is typically provided through booking platforms, and guests are expected to be self-sufficient.
  • Responsive Host: Despite being self-serve, the host (Sonya) is praised for being "immediately replied" to messages, offering remote assistance.

Elkhead Overlook's allure lies in its magnificent natural features and its dedication to providing an uncluttered, scenic camping experience. The highlights are undoubtedly the breathtaking views and the sense of exclusivity.

  • Absolutely Breathtaking Views: This is the paramount feature. The campground offers "amazing views" of Burroughs Cove and the Elk River from the side of the Cumberland Plateau, providing stunning vistas that are frequently highlighted by visitors. It's truly a place where you can "relax on the side of the Cumberland Plateau."
  • Uncrowded and Private: With only three possible sites, the biggest draw is the low density of campers, allowing visitors to feel like they "had the place to ourselves," a rare luxury in popular camping areas. This makes it ideal for a peaceful retreat.
  • Proximity to TN-50: While some road noise can be heard (especially in winter), the direct access from TN-50 means it's straightforward to reach without navigating overly complex mountain roads for long distances.
  • Star Host Recognition: The host, Sonya, is recognized as a "Star Host" on booking platforms, signifying high ratings, responsiveness, and commitment to providing excellent experiences.
  • Suitable for Various Rig Sizes (with considerations): While a total length of 30ft is recommended for RVs, larger rigs have successfully used the site, though it may require more experienced drivers for maneuvering.
  • Tent Camping Options: Site 3 offers a more secluded tent camping experience, shrouded by trees and boulders, though it lacks the overlook view of Sites 1 and 2.
  • Excellent for Stargazing: Being in a more natural, less light-polluted area, the overlook provides great opportunities for stargazing on clear nights.
  • Natural Beauty and Reflection: The beautiful scenery offers ample opportunities for reflection and enjoying the tranquility of the Tennessee mountains.

To book a stay or inquire about Elkhead Overlook, communication is primarily through online booking platforms. Given its self-serve nature, it's essential to utilize the contact methods provided by the specific platform through which you reserve. However, for general inquiries or direct communication with the host, the following information can be used:

  • Address: TN-50, Pelham, TN 37366, USA (Note: some sources list 9665 SR 50, Pelham, TN 37301 as a more precise address. Verify when booking.)
  • No direct public phone number for booking/general queries found, as it operates via booking platforms. The primary method of contact is likely through messaging the host via the chosen booking platform (e.g., Hipcamp).

When booking, pay close attention to the site details, especially regarding RV length recommendations, water availability (or lack thereof), and the specific features of each of the three sites (Sites 1 and 2 with views and electric, Site 3 more secluded for tents). Always message the host directly through the booking platform for any specific questions before your arrival, as they are known for their prompt responses.

Elkhead Overlook is an ideal destination for locals in Tennessee who are seeking a truly scenic and uncrowded camping experience. For residents of Middle and East Tennessee, its location in Pelham provides accessible mountain views that rival those found in more famous, often overcrowded, state parks. The absolute highlight for Tennesseans is the breathtaking panorama overlooking Burroughs Cove and the Elk River, offering a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in the state's natural grandeur without feeling like just another face in the crowd. The limited number of sites ensures a private and peaceful atmosphere, allowing for genuine relaxation and a deeper connection with nature – a luxury often sought but rarely found in popular campgrounds. While it offers essential electric hookups for RVs, its rustic charm and emphasis on self-sufficiency appeal to campers who appreciate simplicity and the raw beauty of the outdoors. The responsiveness of the host, even in a self-serve model, provides reassurance and support. For those who prioritize incredible views, quiet evenings, and a break from the hustle and bustle, Elkhead Overlook offers a perfect, easily reachable escape that truly lets you experience the majestic side of Tennessee from a privileged vantage point. It's a place where the landscape is the main event, inviting locals to rediscover the stunning beauty in their own backyard.
