Crocker Campground

Portola, CA 96122, USA

4.0
Love this place. Clean and big camp sites you can put many tents or rvs in each site. Great place for groups to camp. There are 2 bathrooms that manage to stay pretty clean even on a busy weekend. No running water so bring it. And not onsite trash so take what you brought with you. I will go back over and over - Sean “DJ Taco D” Evans

Prepare to embrace the simplicity and spaciousness that make this campground a beloved spot for many.

Crocker Campground is conveniently located in the scenic region surrounding Portola, California. The specific address for this expansive campground is Portola, CA 96122, USA. This places Crocker Campground within the picturesque boundaries of the Plumas National Forest, an area renowned for its natural beauty, extensive recreational opportunities, and a quieter alternative to some of California's more heavily trafficked parks.

Accessibility to Crocker Campground is generally straightforward for those traveling by personal vehicle. While Portola serves as the closest community, providing access to basic services and supplies, the campground itself is nestled in a more natural, undeveloped setting. The routes leading to the campground are typically well-maintained, but visitors should always be prepared for some unpaved sections closer to the site, which is common for national forest campgrounds. Given its rustic nature and location within a national forest, there are no public transportation options that directly service Crocker Campground. Therefore, a personal vehicle is essential for all visitors. It is always a wise practice for California residents planning a trip to check the latest road conditions and any alerts issued by the Plumas National Forest, especially during shoulder seasons or after significant weather events. This ensures a smooth and enjoyable journey to your spacious campsite, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the natural tranquility that Crocker Campground offers.

Crocker Campground embraces a rustic approach to camping, focusing on providing essential facilities while encouraging campers to be self-sufficient and embrace the natural environment.

Services Offered:

  • Spacious Campsites: A major highlight, the campsites at Crocker Campground are notably large, capable of accommodating multiple tents or RVs. This makes it an ideal location for group camping, family reunions, or simply enjoying extra space.
  • Vault Toilets: The campground provides basic vault toilets. While they are not flush toilets, efforts are made to keep them reasonably clean, even during busy weekends. However, be aware that squirrels have been known to visit the toilets.
  • Picnic Tables: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table, providing a convenient surface for meal preparation, dining, and outdoor activities.
  • Fire Rings: Fire rings are available at each site for campfires, perfect for cooking or enjoying the warmth and ambiance under the stars. It is important to check for current fire restrictions before lighting any fires, and some fire pits might require clearing out previous campers' coals and trash.

It is important to note that Crocker Campground operates with limited amenities compared to more developed sites, which is part of its charm for those seeking a more authentic experience. There is no running water available on-site, requiring campers to bring their own water for all needs. Additionally, there are no on-site trash disposal services, reinforcing a strict "pack it in, pack it out" policy.

Crocker Campground stands out for its specific characteristics that appeal to a particular kind of outdoor enthusiast, especially those from California looking for a more traditional and spacious camping experience.

Features / Highlights:

  • Ideal for Group Camping: The exceptionally large campsites are a major draw, making Crocker Campground a superb choice for large families, groups of friends, or multiple families camping together. There's ample space for numerous tents, RVs, and shared activity areas within each site.
  • Cleanliness of Facilities (Relative): Despite being a basic campground, reviewers often praise the cleanliness of the two available bathrooms, even during peak usage on busy weekends. This suggests a good level of maintenance for a rustic site.
  • Rustic, No-Fee Experience: The absence of running water and on-site trash disposal, combined with the fact that there are no fees for camping, creates a genuine rustic camping experience. This encourages self-reliance and a deeper connection with nature, appealing to those who prefer less developed sites.
  • Quiet Atmosphere: While not explicitly mentioned in all reviews, the nature of a basic, no-fee campground often lends itself to a quieter atmosphere compared to bustling, amenity-rich parks, perfect for relaxation.
  • Accessible by RVs: The large sites and relatively accessible location mean that RVs can utilize this campground, offering flexibility for different types of campers.
  • Opportunities for Campfire Cooking and Gathering: With provided fire rings, campers can enjoy traditional campfire activities, enhancing the communal and outdoor experience.

It's worth noting a few aspects that, while not "highlights" for everyone, are important features to be aware of: the closest lake (likely Lake Davis) is about 4 miles away, meaning direct lakeside camping isn't an option. Also, finding natural firewood within the camping area might require some effort, so bringing your own or purchasing it locally is advisable.

These phone numbers typically connect to the Plumas National Forest Beckwourth Ranger District, which oversees the area where Crocker Campground is located. When calling, you can ask about current conditions, fire restrictions (which are crucial for a site with fire rings), road access, and any other relevant operational details. It is always recommended to check for updates before your trip, especially concerning water availability and "pack it in, pack it out" requirements. While you won't find a dedicated on-site office for Crocker Campground, the district office serves as the primary point of contact for reliable information to ensure a well-prepared and enjoyable camping experience.

Crocker Campground is an excellent choice for California locals who appreciate a more traditional, self-sufficient camping experience and prioritize spaciousness and affordability. Its no-fee policy makes it incredibly accessible for groups and families looking for an economical way to enjoy California's stunning outdoors without compromising on space. The large campsites are a significant advantage, particularly for those bringing multiple tents or RVs, or simply desiring more room to spread out and enjoy their surroundings. This makes it an ideal venue for group gatherings, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared adventure that can be difficult to find at more crowded, regimented campgrounds.

While the absence of running water and on-site trash disposal requires extra preparation and adherence to Leave No Trace principles, these very aspects appeal to campers who value a genuine rustic experience and the satisfaction of being self-reliant. It’s a perfect opportunity for families to teach children about responsible outdoor practices. Furthermore, the commitment to maintaining clean vault toilets, even on busy weekends, demonstrates care for visitor comfort within its basic framework.
