Cooney Reservoir Introduce
For those of us who live in Montana, the state's vast landscapes and incredible bodies of water are a constant invitation to get outside and explore. Located in south-central Montana, near the town of Roberts, Cooney Reservoir Campground offers an ideal setting for a classic Montana outdoor experience. This isn't just a place to set up a tent or park an RV; it's a bustling hub of activity centered around a popular and beautiful reservoir. Known as a campground and a tourist attraction, Cooney Reservoir is a destination that truly has something for everyone, from avid anglers to families looking for a relaxing day trip. Its blend of recreational opportunities and accessible amenities makes it a standout choice for locals seeking a convenient and fun-filled escape.
The reservoir itself is the star of the show, a significant irrigation reservoir with over 1,000 acres of surface area. As one customer review pointed out, the fishing can be great, with plenty of fish to be caught from the shore. This is a testament to its reputation for excellent walleye and rainbow trout fishing. However, as another review wisely cautions, the "midday and afternoon speedboat/tow rope crowd" can make some waves, so if you're a devoted angler, you might want to plan your fishing for the quieter parts of the day. This duality is part of Cooney Reservoir's character; it’s a place that buzzes with energy and activity, a social spot where people come to enjoy the water in all its forms, from fishing to water skiing and wakeboarding.
Cooney Reservoir Campground is designed to accommodate a wide variety of visitors. It features options for both tent and RV camping, with on-site parking available to make your setup easy and convenient. The amenities are a major draw, including public restrooms, showers, and running water, which make for a more comfortable camping experience than a primitive site. The presence of picnic tables and designated areas for picnics also makes it a great spot for a simple day trip, allowing you to enjoy a meal with a view. The fact that it is a "Good for kids" location with "kid-friendly hikes" adds to its appeal as a family destination, ensuring there are activities for every member of your party.
One of the most impressive aspects of Cooney Reservoir is its commitment to accessibility. The campground features a "wheelchair accessible entrance," "wheelchair accessible parking lot," and "wheelchair accessible restroom." This is a significant highlight, as it ensures that people of all abilities can enjoy the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that the park offers. This inclusive approach speaks to the welcoming nature of the campground and its dedication to providing a great experience for everyone in the community.
While the road to the campsites may be a "washboard gravel dirt road," as one review mentions, this is a minor detail that is easily overlooked once you arrive at the beautiful lakeside setting. The stunning views and the range of activities more than compensate for the bumpy drive. It’s a place where you can spend your days hiking the shore, catching fish, or just relaxing by the water, and your evenings telling stories around a campfire. The allowance of dogs (on a leash) is another bonus, meaning you don't have to leave your four-legged family members behind.

April 23 · Patrick ConroyIt's a smaller reservoir and the road to the campsites is a washboard gravel dirt road.If you're going fishing, beware of the midday and afternoon speedboat/tow rope crowd. They're going to make some waves 🌊
August 31 · Chad PinkstonA buddy and I where just passing through and needed a place to sleep. Nice camp ground, fare warning for people who want to tent camp, it's definitely aimed at more of an RV clientele than tent, they still have tent pads on most of the sites just got an RV park vibe from it. If you live in Billings I could definitely see it as a good weekend get away from the hustle of the city. Also all the roads into the area are gravel so expect your vehicle to get dirty 👍 definitely a pretty drive and a pretty place! Would recommend a stop! *Photo was taken at site T001 Red Arm Loop
July 26 · liam SPark Ranger and the camp host were both really great with answering all our questions and giving directions to camp and nearest local convenience store! The campground is clean and beautiful, right on the lake, but not much shade so come prepared!
