Colonial Creek South Campground Introduce
For many Washingtonians, the majestic North Cascades represent the pinnacle of our state's natural beauty. Towering peaks, vibrant turquoise lakes, and ancient forests beckon adventurers and peace-seekers alike. Among the many opportunities to experience this awe-inspiring landscape, Colonial Creek South Campground stands out as a prime destination. Nestled right on the shores of the iconic Diablo Lake, this campground offers a genuine escape into the wilderness, providing a serene base camp for exploring one of America's most stunning national parks.
Washington's diverse outdoor offerings mean there's a perfect camping spot for every preference. Colonial Creek South Campground, however, holds a special appeal for those looking to truly disconnect and immerse themselves in the pristine environment. While it provides essential amenities, it champions a more rustic experience, free from the constant pings of cell phones and the distractions of modern life. This article will guide you through the ins and outs of Colonial Creek South, from its breathtaking location and accessibility to the services you can expect and the incredible adventures that await. For locals eager to embrace the wild heart of Washington, this campground is an unparalleled choice.
Colonial Creek South Campground is wonderfully situated on State Route 20, near milepost 130, in Rockport, WA 98283, USA. This places it directly within the breathtaking North Cascades National Park Service Complex, specifically along the vibrant turquoise waters of Diablo Lake. For residents across Western Washington, including those in Seattle, Bellingham, and Everett, accessing this natural haven involves a scenic drive along the North Cascades Highway (State Route 20).
While the drive is picturesque, it's important for locals to note that State Route 20 (North Cascades Highway) is typically closed during winter months due to heavy snowfall, usually from late fall through spring. Therefore, planning your trip during the open season (generally late May to mid-September for reservable sites, with some walk-in sites available before and after) is crucial. Once the highway is open, the campground is relatively easy to reach by car, RV, or trailer. However, be aware that many sites have shorter parking spurs, and some are "walk-to" (tent-only) sites, requiring you to carry your gear a short distance. The remote location means you'll be leaving behind the hustle and bustle, but also modern conveniences like consistent cell service, offering a true digital detox.
Colonial Creek South Campground, managed by the National Park Service, focuses on providing essential services that support a comfortable yet authentic outdoor experience. While not a full-service resort, it offers key amenities for campers:
- Designated Campsites: The campground features numerous sites accommodating tents, trailers, and RVs (though many RV sites have shorter spurs, typically 16-38 feet). There are also specific walk-to (tent-only) sites, some of which are located directly along the water.
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite is equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring, perfect for cooking and gathering. However, campers must always check for current burn bans, as fires are frequently prohibited, especially during dry periods, as noted in recent customer reviews.
- Flush Toilets: A significant comfort for many campers, the restrooms offer running water and flushing toilets, which are often described as clean and well-maintained. Vault toilets may be available during the off-season when flush toilets are closed.
- Potable Water: Drinking water is available at various points within the campground, ensuring campers have access to fresh water.
- Bear Boxes/Food Storage Lockers: Critically important in this wildlife-rich area, bear-resistant food storage lockers are provided at each site to protect food and scented items from bears and other animals.
- Dump Station: For RV and trailer campers, a dump station is available for waste disposal.
- Boat Launch/Ramp: Direct access to Diablo Lake is provided via a boat launch, making it convenient for those bringing kayaks, canoes, or small boats.
- Amphitheater: The campground includes an amphitheater, often used for ranger-led programs and educational activities during peak season.
- Camp Hosts: During the peak season, camp hosts are typically on-site to assist visitors, provide information, and ensure campground rules are followed.
- Accessibility: There are ADA-accessible campsites available, demonstrating an effort to accommodate all visitors.
Colonial Creek South Campground offers a wealth of features and highlights that make it a compelling choice for Washington locals seeking outdoor adventure and relaxation:
- Stunning Diablo Lake Access: The campground's prime location on the shores of Diablo Lake is its most significant draw. The lake's distinctive turquoise color, a result of glacial flour, provides a spectacular backdrop for all activities.
- Abundant Water Activities: With direct lake access, campers can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing (with a Washington State fishing license), and even swimming (though the water is cold!).
- Extensive Hiking Opportunities: The campground serves as an excellent trailhead for several popular hikes. The Thunder Creek Trailhead is accessible directly from the South Loop, offering a long trail through woods and along water. The Thunder Knob Trailhead, providing excellent views of Diablo Lake and the dam, is just a 10-minute drive away across State Route 20.
- Old-Growth Forest Setting: The campsites are nestled within an old-growth forest of western redcedar, western hemlock, and Douglas-fir, providing ample shade and a true Pacific Northwest ambiance.
- Wildlife Viewing: The natural environment is home to various wildlife, including deer and a variety of bird species. Campers should also be prepared for the possibility of encountering bears, as they are active in the area, reinforcing the importance of using bear boxes.
- Peaceful and Calm Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, many visitors describe the campground as very beautiful and calm, a true "gem place to camp" for those seeking tranquility.
- Digital Detox: The lack of internet and phone reception is a highlight for many, allowing for a complete disconnection from digital distractions and a deeper connection with nature and companions.
- Variety of Campsite Sizes: Sites vary significantly, accommodating everything from small tents to larger setups, ensuring options for different camping needs.

Colonial Creek South Campground Reviews
A very beautiful place, calm, and gem place to camp. This camp ground has a long trail to enjoy between the woods and water. If you have plan to stay, just heads up, no internet and phone reception and might you meet bear!
Jun 17, 2025 · Sepehr ZolfaghariPretty nice campground to enjoy water activities on the lake, as well as some nearby hiking. The Diablo Lake trailhead is only 10 minutes driving and has good views of the lake and the dam. The campground has plenty of spots, but they vary significantly on size, some can only accommodate one small tent, while others have room for both a large tent and a small one. All spots have a dining table and fire pit, though fires are no longer allowed. The restroom is top notch, has running water and flushing toilets, magical! All in all, a great campground to relax and enjoy nature.
Jul 26, 2024 · Francesc Vilariño GüellAmazing place, large sites, river/lake access, flushing toilets, dog friendly. Such a beautiful place loved my time spent in this area.
Jun 08, 2025 · CFThis campsite is amazing! We had no reservations and were relying on cancellations. We were blessed that weekend. Moved 3 times to different campsites that became available for that day. Rangers Wendy and Christine were awesome as well as the gentleman that opened up the camp for the day. No fees if you grab a cancelled site for the night. Please keep your food locked up either in your car or in storage that is provided at each site. Bears do come by and they recently had to put one down:/
Aug 23, 2022 · AnnaBeautiful camp ground with a gorgeous lake. This place is by far one of my favorite places. The sites are all sorts of sizes so please check in advance with recreation.gov to make sure your site will be what you need. The trails here are very well maintained and so is the beach. The water is very cold, gets deep quickly and has some very strong currents so please wear a life jacket at all times. Kayak and sup users be aware of the wind it picks up quick and tends to blow hard.
