Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites

45 Central Ave, Beverly Shores, IN 46301, USA

3.0
This campground is about as primitive as they come. No bathrooms (only porta-potties). No water. No office. I reserved spot two, which is the forever away from all the other spots. It was extremely quiet at night, even though a large group of teens were partying at spot one. The campground is right next to Central Beach, which I feel is the most beautiful stretch of beach I experienced during my short visit at Indiana Dunes National and State Parks. Just be ready for a hefty hike to reach any campsite other than number one (especially 3, 4, and 5). - Nick Chill

Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites Introduce

For Indiana residents with a love for rugged outdoor adventures and unparalleled natural beauty, Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites offers a truly primitive and rewarding experience. Tucked away in Beverly Shores, Indiana, at 45 Central Ave, this campground is not for the faint of heart or those seeking glamping comforts. Instead, it caters to the dedicated camper who appreciates the raw, unfiltered essence of the outdoors. If your ideal Indiana getaway involves pitching a tent in a secluded spot, falling asleep to the sounds of nature, and waking up moments from one of the most stunning beaches in the Indiana Dunes, then this unique destination deserves your attention.

Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites stands apart from typical campgrounds due to its intentionally primitive nature. This means campers should arrive fully prepared, as amenities are minimal. There is no running water, no traditional bathrooms (only porta-potties), and no on-site office. This lack of conventional facilities is precisely what gives the campground its character, attracting those who are self-sufficient and prefer to immerse themselves deeply in their surroundings. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect and appreciate the simplicity of camping.

The crown jewel of this campground is its immediate proximity to Central Beach. Many visitors consider Central Beach to be one of the most beautiful stretches of shoreline within the Indiana Dunes National and State Parks system. The access to the beach, while steep in descent, is incredibly rewarding, leading to crystal-clear waters and expansive sands. Imagine spending your days swimming, sunbathing, or simply strolling along the pristine coastline, knowing your campsite is just a short, scenic hike away. This direct beach access is a significant draw, making it ideal for Indiana locals who cherish lakeside recreation.

Privacy and quiet are also key features, particularly for sites further from the main entrance. While site one might accommodate larger groups and occasional lively gatherings, sites like number two, and especially three, four, and five, offer remarkable tranquility. The hike to these more remote sites can be substantial, making them perfect for campers who value seclusion and don't mind a bit of a trek to their personal slice of wilderness. This unique combination of primitive camping, stunning beach access, and potential for quiet solitude makes Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites a distinctive and memorable option for Indiana's outdoor enthusiasts.

Location and Accessibility

Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites is located at 45 Central Ave, Beverly Shores, IN 46301, USA. This address places it directly within the breathtaking landscape of the Indiana Dunes National Park, offering campers an unparalleled opportunity to experience one of Indiana's most iconic natural treasures. The campground's name, "Walk-in Campsites," is a crucial indicator of its accessibility – while vehicles can reach the parking area, access to the individual campsites requires a hike, often a significant one depending on the specific site chosen.

The location boasts excellent paved parking, capable of accommodating vehicles of any size, including RVs, making the initial arrival hassle-free. However, it's vital for campers to understand that this is where the vehicle access ends. From the parking lot, campers must carry all their gear to their respective sites. For sites like numbers three, four, and five, this can translate into a "hefty hike," a detail that seasoned primitive campers will appreciate as it contributes to the secluded nature of these spots.

A significant highlight of its location is its direct adjacency to Central Beach. This proximity means that after setting up camp, the stunning shores of Lake Michigan are just a short, albeit steep, walk down. The descent to the beach is described as steep but "so worth it," emphasizing the beauty awaiting at the bottom. This direct beach access is a rare and highly desirable feature for any campground, offering immediate opportunities for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying the lake's clear waters.

Connectivity at this location is surprisingly adequate for a primitive setting. Visitors have reported receiving 2 bars of Verizon 4G LTE Roaming, which can be useful for essential communication or basic online checks, though it’s wise not to rely on it for constant connectivity. Given the primitive nature of the campground (no office, no running water), campers must be entirely self-sufficient once they arrive. This includes bringing all necessary water, cooking supplies, and being prepared for the use of porta-potties for restroom facilities. The combination of easy drive-in access to the parking lot and challenging walk-in access to sites defines the unique logistical considerations of this captivating Indiana Dunes camping spot.

For Indiana locals who crave an authentic, minimalist, and incredibly scenic outdoor experience, Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites offers a unique and highly suitable option. This primitive campground, nestled within the iconic Indiana Dunes National Park in Beverly Shores, is tailored for those who truly embrace self-sufficiency and the raw beauty of nature, making it a distinctive choice for the adventurous Hoosier camper.

Its primary appeal for locals lies in its unparalleled proximity to Central Beach, which many consider the most beautiful stretch of shoreline in the entire Indiana Dunes area. For residents accustomed to the beauty of Lake Michigan, having direct, walk-in access to crystal-clear waters and pristine sands is an extraordinary privilege. It allows for spontaneous beach days, refreshing swims, and breathtaking sunsets, all just a short hike from your tent. This immediate connection to such a significant natural landmark makes it an ideal spot for those seeking beach-centric camping without a lengthy commute or crowded park facilities.

Moreover, the primitive nature of the campsites—with no running water, outhouses (porta-potties) as the only restroom option, and the requirement to carry all gear to your site—is precisely what makes it suitable for a specific segment of the local camping community. Many Indiana outdoors enthusiasts actively seek out these "less developed" experiences for the enhanced sense of solitude and connection with nature they provide. The promise of "extremely quiet" nights, especially at the more remote sites, further reinforces its appeal for those looking to genuinely disconnect from urban noise and unwind in a truly peaceful setting.

While the hike to some sites can be "hefty," this physical challenge is part of the allure for active locals who view it as an integral part of the adventure. It ensures a greater sense of privacy and seclusion, differentiating it from more populated, amenity-rich campgrounds. For Hoosiers who have honed their camping skills and value a stripped-down, focused outdoor experience, Central Avenue Walk-in Campsites represents an accessible yet wild escape right in their own backyard. It’s a place where the stunning natural environment takes center stage, offering a profound sense of tranquility and connection to the majestic Indiana Dunes.
