As with many long-standing local businesses, campgrounds evolve, and understanding these changes is key for those planning their next outdoor adventure.
Canoe River Campground has been a part of the Mansfield landscape for many years, a place where countless individuals have created cherished childhood memories. The reviews from long-time patrons often speak to a deep nostalgia for the "awesome time" and "amazing family memories" made during past visits, highlighting the significant role the campground played in their lives. This speaks to the potential for a truly memorable experience when the right elements align.
Recently, Canoe River Campground has undergone a change in ownership. This transition, as reflected in recent customer feedback, has brought about noticeable shifts in operations and guest experience. While the core offering of a place to camp amidst nature remains, the emphasis and atmosphere have evidently seen some adjustments. This article aims to provide Massachusetts locals with an updated and factual overview of Canoe River Campground, helping to inform decisions based on current conditions and available information. We will explore its location, services, and what you might expect from a visit today, always maintaining a professional yet friendly tone to assist you in planning your next outdoor excursion.
Canoe River Campground is conveniently located at 137 Mill St, Mansfield, MA 02048, USA. Mansfield is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, situated approximately 25 miles southwest of Boston and 17 miles northeast of Providence, Rhode Island. This strategic location makes the campground easily accessible for a significant portion of Massachusetts residents, as well as those in northern Rhode Island.
The campground's proximity to major interstate highways is a significant advantage for accessibility. It is situated not far from Interstate 95 and Interstate 495, two of the primary arteries connecting various parts of Massachusetts and the wider New England region. This ensures a relatively straightforward drive for campers traveling from the greater Boston area, Cape Cod, Worcester, and other communities across the state. The surrounding area of Mansfield offers a blend of suburban amenities and pockets of natural beauty, providing convenience for supplies and services while still offering an escape into a more natural setting. Its ease of access makes Canoe River Campground a viable option for a weekend getaway or a longer family camping trip for many Massachusetts locals.
Based on general campground offerings and customer reviews, Canoe River Campground provides core services for campers, though recent changes in ownership may have impacted the scope or emphasis of these services.
- Campsites: Offers sites for both tents and RVs. The specifics regarding hookups (electric, water, sewer) would typically be available upon booking, as is standard for most campgrounds.
- Pool Access: Features a pool, which according to recent reviews, has been noted as clean. This is a common and highly valued amenity for family camping, especially during warmer months.
- Bathroom Facilities: Provides communal bathroom facilities, which recent reviews indicate are clean. This is a fundamental expectation for any campground.
- Laundry Facilities: While not explicitly mentioned in the provided reviews, most established campgrounds of this size typically offer on-site laundry facilities for camper convenience.
- General Store/Office: A central point for check-in and potentially for purchasing basic camping supplies, firewood, or snacks.
It is important for prospective campers to directly confirm specific services and their availability when making reservations, particularly given the recent changes in ownership and the varying experiences reported by past customers. The previous emphasis on "so many fun activities" suggests a broader range of recreational services was once a key offering, which current visitors note as having changed.
Canoe River Campground, under its previous and current operations, has certain characteristics that define its appeal, even as management styles shift.
- Convenient Location: Its Mansfield location provides easy access for Massachusetts residents, being relatively close to major population centers and highways.
- Pool Facility: The presence of a pool, and its current cleanliness, remains a highlight, offering a refreshing amenity, particularly for families during warm weather.
- Cleanliness: Recent reviews consistently highlight improved cleanliness of the campground, including the pool and bathrooms, which is a significant positive change.
- Community Potential: Historically, the campground fostered a strong sense of belonging and community, a sentiment that loyal patrons deeply cherished. While this aspect may have shifted, the underlying infrastructure for community interaction (common areas, potential activity spaces) likely remains.
- Space for Two Campers (Historically): Older experiences noted the possibility of having two campers on a site, which offered flexibility for larger families or groups. However, recent reviews indicate this policy may now be strictly enforced with additional fees or restrictions.
- Natural Setting: Despite being in a developed area, the campground offers an escape into a natural environment, allowing for traditional camping experiences.
It's important to note that while cleanliness has improved, the variety and quantity of activities offered have reportedly decreased compared to previous ownership, impacting the overall "fun" factor for some long-time visitors. The atmosphere regarding guest relations also appears to have undergone a significant shift, as indicated by the emotional feedback in the provided reviews.
Information regarding specific "promotions or special offers" for Canoe River Campground is not readily available in the provided data or typical public listings for campgrounds that have recently undergone significant operational changes. Most campgrounds structure their pricing based on seasonality, site type (tent, RV, hookups), and duration of stay.
- Seasonal Rates: Like many campgrounds, Canoe River Campground likely offers seasonal rates for extended stays, which can be more cost-effective for frequent visitors or those seeking a summer base.
- Weekly/Monthly Discounts: Discounts for booking weekly or monthly stays compared to nightly rates are common in the industry.
- Referral Programs: Some campgrounds implement referral programs, but there's no specific public information confirming this for Canoe River.
- Off-Peak Season Pricing: During shoulder seasons (spring and fall), rates are often lower than peak summer rates, potentially offering a more budget-friendly option.
Given the feedback about recent changes in management and policies, it is strongly recommended that prospective campers directly contact Canoe River Campground to inquire about their current pricing structure, any available specials, and specifically clarify policies regarding site occupancy, visitor fees, and activity schedules before making a reservation. This will ensure full transparency and avoid any misunderstandings upon arrival.

It is always advisable to call directly and speak with the current management to confirm policies, rates, and amenities, especially in light of the recent ownership changes. This direct communication will help set expectations and ensure a smoother experience.
For Massachusetts residents considering Canoe River Campground, its suitability hinges on current expectations and preferences, particularly in light of recent changes under new ownership. Historically, it has been a place of immense joy and "amazing family memories" for many locals, and its potential as a convenient outdoor escape still exists.
The primary advantage for locals remains its accessible location in Mansfield. Being relatively close to major population centers and interstate highways means less travel time and more time enjoying the outdoors. For those seeking a simple, clean place to pitch a tent or park an RV without venturing far from home, this convenience is a significant draw. The reported improvement in cleanliness of the facilities, including the pool and bathrooms, is a positive development that enhances basic comfort during a stay.
However, it's crucial for locals to approach Canoe River Campground with an understanding of the shifts in its operations. While it "was so fun" and felt like "we belonged here" under previous ownership, recent reviews suggest a change in atmosphere, particularly regarding customer service and the scope of activities. The feedback indicates a move towards stricter adherence to policies and potentially a less "family-oriented" or "welcoming" feel than some long-time patrons remember.
Therefore, for new visitors or those returning after a long absence, it's important to adjust expectations. If your primary goal is a clean campsite with a functional pool in a convenient location, Canoe River Campground may still serve your needs. However, if you are seeking a highly active resort with extensive programmed entertainment and a very lenient, "home-away-from-home" community feel, it is advisable to call ahead to understand current offerings and policies or consider other options that might align better with those specific desires. For locals, the decision will now weigh convenience and improved cleanliness against a potentially different overall guest experience.

Canoe River Campground Reviews
Me and my family have been coming here for a few years now, there was so many fun activities to do, it want the cleanest but what can I say it was so fun we loved it here it felt like we belonged here. But ever since the new owners, we’ve seen a big change, the only positive thing I could say was that it is cleaner. They were harassing us all day because we had two campers on a site but were going to move it very soon but had to clean and fix them both up. Made me and my parents pay because my grandparents forgot to put five people instead of two, which I believe are going to change,so we left after feeling like we weren’t welcomed here anymore, my mother said in exact words “what happened to you place?” Which broke me.Last year and the year before that I would of said “come on in it is so fun you will love it here” but now we can’t even say anything similar or close to what we used to think. I don’t recommend this place anymore.
Jun 15, 2025 · Ashley PinaI used to camp here as a child with my large extended family in the old safari area. We had an awesome time and made amazing family memories. Emma and Joe the old owners were extremely family orientated and you can tell they cared so much about everyones experience. Now as an adult I went back with my own little family. Unfortunately, so many things have changed. The campground is clean but does not have activities as it did. The pool and bathrooms were clean. We still had a good time, just not as I remembered it when I was growing up.
Mar 10, 2025 · Kelsey MacDonoughCabin was great. Had a nice screened in porch. Had fish and chips, which was delicious! Quiet. Fun activities. I would return!
Jun 15, 2025 · Heidi PietteGreat campground! Excellent location, especially if you're hitting a show at Gillette. Only reason I had to take off a star was the bathrooms really need to be cleaned more often. Otherwise, just wear water shoes when you shower and you'll have a great time!
Aug 31, 2024 · Zachary KopetOur cabin was amazing very clean and big, but the "water view" was not it. Its literally a swamp and lots of trees were blocking the view. The staff was very cool and friendly, the only negative point was the guy next to us gross and disgusting he was spitting all day long we tried to sit on the porch but he was there spitting and smoking. Seriously a real no class redneck it ruins our times outside.
