Camp Geronimo Site 15

Campground ★4.0

Payson, AZ 85541, USA

4.0
Good site for large troops. We had 10 people and we shared this site with another troop that had around 12. Lots of shade and quite. Next to the LDS Pioneer Chapel. Only negative is that it is far for the dinning hall and pool area so you need to factor in walking time. Also, there is not a permanent ramada structure. Our troop had the lower section of #15 which had 5 tents and one picnic table with no ramada. The upper part of #15 has about 7 tents and a temporary ramada. - Kent Rasmussen

Situated beneath the majestic Mogollon Rim and surrounded by over 5,000 acres of ponderosa pine forest, this site provides a cool, shaded, and quiet retreat. It’s a place where kids can learn, explore, and have fun, all while being immersed in the natural beauty that defines the high country of Arizona. This article will provide a detailed look at what makes Camp Geronimo Site 15 a great choice for your next group outing.

The unique nature of Camp Geronimo as a Scout camp means it is tailored to educational and recreational activities for youth. Reviews from past visitors highlight the camp’s ability to create a fun and enriching environment. The site itself is praised for its ability to accommodate large groups comfortably, with plenty of shade and a peaceful atmosphere. While it is part of a larger, bustling camp, Site 15 offers a secluded feel that is ideal for focused group activities and quiet reflection. The emphasis on learning and fun, as noted in a review, is a testament to the camp’s mission to provide a truly exceptional experience for young people.

From the opportunities for learning new skills to the abundant nature that surrounds the site, Camp Geronimo Site 15 is more than just a place to sleep; it’s a place to grow and create lasting memories. We will delve into all the factual details you need to plan a successful and meaningful trip, from its specific location to the amenities and features that make it so special.

Camp Geronimo Site 15 is located in Payson, AZ 85541, USA. The camp itself is situated at a comfortable elevation of over 5,200 feet, which provides a welcome escape from the intense heat of the lower-lying areas of Arizona. The site is part of the larger Camp Geronimo facility, which is a year-round operation. A key part of the site’s accessibility is its location within the camp. As noted by a visitor, it is right next to the LDS Pioneer Chapel.

While the camp is a large facility, the review points out that Site 15 is a bit of a walk from the main dining hall and pool area. This is a point to factor into your plans, especially for large groups with kids, as it will require extra time for walking. The distance, however, contributes to the site’s quiet and secluded nature, making it a peaceful retreat away from the main hub of activity. The surrounding Ponderosa pine forest provides not only ample shade but also a clear sense of being in nature, which is a significant part of the camping experience. The camp is winterized from approximately October 15 to May 15, during which time running water is not available, though water hydrants are provided for filling containers. This seasonal change is important to consider for those planning a visit outside of the summer months.

The location’s accessibility to the rest of the camp is intentional, offering a balance between privacy and access to all the fun activities Camp Geronimo has to offer. This makes Site 15 an excellent choice for groups who value a more quiet campsite while still being able to participate in all the camp programs.

As part of the Camp Geronimo facility, Site 15 has access to many amenities and services that make camping a comfortable experience.

  • Large Group Capacity: The site is well-suited for large groups and scout troops. A review noted that it comfortably accommodated two separate troops with a combined total of around 22 people. This makes it a perfect option for a group of any size that wants to camp together in a shared space.

  • Tent Camping: The site is designed for tent camping, with a specific layout that can accommodate a number of tents. A reviewer mentioned that the lower section of Site 15 had space for five tents, while the upper section had space for seven, showing its capacity and division of space.

  • Picnic Tables: Each section of the site has at least one picnic table, providing a convenient place for groups to gather, eat meals, and plan their daily activities. This is a fundamental amenity that enhances the camping experience.

  • Shade: The site has "lots of shade," which is a significant benefit in the Arizona climate. The surrounding ponderosa pines provide natural shade, keeping the site cool and comfortable during the day. This is a highly valued feature for a summer camp in Arizona, where the sun can be intense.

  • Ramadas: While the lower section of Site 15 does not have a permanent ramada structure, the upper part does have a "temporary ramada." This provides a shaded area for gathering and can be a huge plus for groups to have a central point to relax out of the sun.

These services, while basic, are essential for a successful group camping trip and are well-suited to the needs of the groups that typically visit Camp Geronimo.

The highlights of staying at Camp Geronimo, and specifically at Site 15, extend beyond the basic amenities and into the overall experience.

  • Educational and Fun Environment: As one reviewer enthusiastically stated, there is "No better place in Arizona than Camp Geronimo for a kid to have fun and learn new things." The camp is known for its wide range of activities, from a new pool and showers to a trading post, climbing tower, small lake, and a variety of merit badge classes. This commitment to both fun and education is a major reason why troops return year after year.

  • Quiet and Secluded: Despite being part of a larger camp, Site 15 offers a quiet and peaceful environment. The distance from the main dining hall and pool area, while a small inconvenience, ensures a tranquil atmosphere that is perfect for a more relaxed group experience.

  • Well-Maintained Facilities: The larger Camp Geronimo facility is known for having a modern pool and shower houses. While the bathrooms at individual sites might be more basic, the overall camp infrastructure is well-maintained and designed to support large groups. This gives campers the best of both worlds: a rustic campsite with access to clean, modern facilities.

  • Sense of Community: The camp is centered around the values of scouting and youth development. Visitors often praise the staff and the sense of community that is built during a stay. This focus on character building and social interaction is a key highlight that sets Camp Geronimo apart from a typical public campground.

These highlights demonstrate that a visit to Camp Geronimo is not just a camping trip but a meaningful and educational experience.

As Camp Geronimo is a facility for scouting groups and other youth organizations, it is not a traditional public campground. For information on booking a site like Site 15, the best approach is to contact the Grand Canyon Council, which operates the camp. The phone number to reach them is (602) 266-5420. The address provided is Payson, AZ 85541, USA, which is a general location for the camp. Specific directions and check-in procedures are provided upon reservation.

It is important to understand that reservations are typically made well in advance through the council's system, and they are usually for groups rather than individuals. This process ensures that the camp remains organized and provides a safe and structured environment for its intended users.

Choosing Camp Geronimo Site 15 is a fantastic decision for any large youth group or scout troop looking for a place that combines traditional camping with modern amenities and a robust program of activities. The site’s secluded nature, coupled with its close proximity to the camp’s facilities, offers a balanced experience. It provides a peaceful setting for group bonding and reflection while still being close enough to the dining hall, pool, and merit badge programs to make the trip a complete success. The ample shade and quiet atmosphere are highly valued, especially during a hot Arizona summer.

The true value of Camp Geronimo lies in its mission. It is a place dedicated to helping kids learn, grow, and have fun in a safe and supportive environment. While some may find the walk to the dining hall and pool a slight negative, it is a minor point when weighed against the benefits of having a secluded, quiet site. The experience of being surrounded by nature and having access to a world of adventure and learning makes Camp Geronimo an unmatched destination in Arizona. It is a place that truly delivers on the promise of a memorable and enriching outdoor experience for young people.
