Camp Atterbury Campground Introduce
Nestled within the extensive grounds of Camp Atterbury in Edinburgh, Indiana, the Camp Atterbury Campground, also known as Whitaker Place Campground, offers a distinctive and often tranquil outdoor experience. It's important for Indiana residents to note that this campground operates with specific eligibility requirements, primarily serving military-affiliated individuals (including active duty, National Guard, reservists, retired military, 100% disabled veterans, and DoD Civilians) and State of Indiana employees. This unique operational model sets it apart from typical public campgrounds, providing a dedicated recreational space for those who serve or have served our state and nation.
The campground is generally regarded as a "wonderful campground" by many of its users, highlighting its overall appeal within its specific demographic. Visitors frequently praise the helpfulness and availability of the staff, with one reviewer noting the "Campground Host, Mark is very nice and available almost all the time." This hands-on approach to management contributes significantly to a positive and supportive environment for eligible campers. The sentiment of being a "nice, clean campground" is prevalent, emphasizing the care put into maintaining the facilities for its guests.
While the eligibility criteria are a defining characteristic, it also means the campground cultivates a unique community atmosphere among its visitors. Many find it to be a "very quiet" location, offering a peaceful respite from daily life. For those who meet the access requirements, the benefits extend beyond just a place to park an RV or set up a tent. The presence of amenities like a stocked pond for fishing and access to various on-base facilities (though some, like the pool or snack bar, may have operational limitations) adds value to the stay.
However, it is crucial to address the serious concerns raised in one review regarding allegations of homophobia and racism by staff and other campers. Such experiences are deeply troubling and contradict the inclusive values expected in any recreational setting, especially one associated with military service. While this specific review represents a single account among others that do not mention such issues, it is vital for prospective visitors to be aware of all feedback. Eligibility for this campground is a privilege earned through service or employment, and all visitors should expect a respectful and welcoming environment regardless of identity. This article will provide factual details about the campground's amenities, location, and contact information, based on publicly available data and reviews, to help eligible Indiana locals make informed decisions.
Camp Atterbury Campground is located within the Camp Atterbury Joint Maneuver Training Center in Edinburgh, IN 46124, USA. Edinburgh is a town situated in Johnson and Bartholomew counties, approximately 40 miles south of Indianapolis. This location places the campground within easy reach for military personnel and eligible state employees residing across central and southern Indiana.
Access to Camp Atterbury requires entry through a controlled gate. For RVs, it's important to note that vehicles "must enter the base from the east gate rather than the main gate," as the main gate may require a U-turn for larger vehicles. This specific entry instruction helps ensure a smoother arrival for RVs of all sizes. Once on base, the campground is typically well-signed.
While the campground is located on a military installation, it offers a degree of seclusion from urban bustle, yet remains within a reasonable driving distance to essential services. Reviewers mention that the "closest grocery and big box stores" are "about a 20 minute drive" away, usually found in nearby towns like Columbus or Franklin. This balance provides a quiet retreat while still maintaining practical access to supplies. Its proximity to Interstate 65 (I-65) further enhances its accessibility for those traveling from other parts of Indiana, making it a convenient stop or destination for eligible individuals.

Jan 12, 2025 · J KeUpdated June 2023. Open to military and State of Indiana employees only. Wonderful campground. Price is a little high for a military campground. There is a beautiful pool only a one block walk away but it is closed because they could not get lifeguards (you need to pay enough to make it worthwhile to drive to your rural area). A Post snack bar a short two block walk away is permanently closed too. Small PX about a mile away, closed on Sundays when many soldiers are there. About a 20 minute drive to the closest grocery and big box stores. Campground Host, Mark is very nice and available almost all the time. Stocked pond fishing is catch and release. No hot water at the East bathhouse. Good hot water in the shower at the West bathhouse but I never got hot water from the sinks in order to shave. I think next year I will check out the price at the public County campground a short distance away but outside the National Guard Camp fence.
