Butterfly Lake Campground

Campground ★4.0

Wasatch Cache National Forest, FR106, Hanna, UT 84031, USA

4.0
Awesome campground but super buggy (7/15-16)! It was funny though it seemed like some sites were much more affected by bugs than others. We were distanced from the lake but at dusk and morning the bugs were pretty intolerable even with insect repellant and a smokey fire going. We will definitely be back when it’s a little cooler and hopefully less buggy.Otherwise, great little campground with gorgeous views. The host came by to check in and we bought some firewood from him. - Denali Sperl

Butterfly Lake Campground Introduce

For those of us in Utah who cherish the high mountain country, Butterfly Lake Campground offers a truly spectacular escape. Situated on the shores of its namesake lake in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest, this campground is a secluded gem that provides a quintessential high-elevation camping experience. It’s the perfect place to get away from the summer heat and enjoy the crisp mountain air, pristine waters, and breathtaking views. This isn't a bustling resort, but rather a quiet, beautiful destination that caters to those who love fishing, hiking, and simply enjoying the serenity of the outdoors. Its location near the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway makes it a popular stop for both local adventurers and visitors exploring one of Utah's most scenic drives.

The allure of Butterfly Lake Campground is rooted in its stunning natural features. The campground sits at an elevation of over 10,000 feet, which means it offers cooler temperatures and a unique subalpine environment. The lake itself is a sight to behold, with clear waters that are perfect for non-motorized activities like canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Anglers will particularly appreciate the fishing opportunities, with one review calling it an "amazing place for fishing" and noting that it has "plenty of rainbow trout." The campground is nestled among white fir trees, providing partial shade and a sense of being truly immersed in the forest. The area is dotted with colorful summer wildflowers, adding to the picturesque scenery and making it a feast for the eyes.

Visitors consistently rave about the scenic beauty of the campground, calling the views "gorgeous" and the place "10 out of 10." The rustic amenities are perfectly suited to the environment, with picnic tables and fire pits with grates available at each site, allowing for comfortable outdoor cooking and dining. The presence of a campground host, as noted in a review, is a helpful touch, providing assistance and firewood for purchase. The campground’s "Good for kids" highlight is also a key feature, with kid-friendly hikes and a safe environment for children to explore. This makes it an ideal spot for a family camping trip where everyone can find something to enjoy.

It's important to be prepared for the realities of high-elevation camping, however. As one review points out, the area can be "super buggy" at certain times of the year, particularly in mid-July. This is a common issue for many campgrounds near water, and while insect repellent and a smokey fire can help, it's something to be aware of. Despite this, the same reviewer said they would "definitely be back," which speaks volumes about the overall positive experience. The fact that the campground is a "first come, first serve" site also means that planning is key, especially during peak season, as the 20 single campsites can fill up quickly. This contributes to a quiet atmosphere, as it avoids the high traffic and crowds of campgrounds that rely solely on reservations.
