For those of us who appreciate the details—like readily available firewood or well-maintained facilities—Bushay Recreation Area clearly delivers. It’s a place that understands the needs of campers, offering those little extras that transform a good trip into a great one. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or looking to introduce someone new to the joys of the outdoors, Bushay Recreation Area provides an inviting and well-equipped setting for your next California adventure.
Bushay Recreation Area is strategically located at Marina Dr, Ukiah, CA 95482, USA. This address places it squarely in Mendocino County, a region of Northern California celebrated for its vineyards, redwood forests, and scenic coastlines. More importantly, its location offers exceptional accessibility, a significant advantage for locals planning a getaway.
As highlighted by a grateful camper, Bushay Recreation Area is "easy to access, right off the 101." This is a monumental convenience for anyone traveling from the Bay Area, Sacramento, or other points along Highway 101. The ability to pull off a major freeway and quickly arrive at your destination minimizes travel time and maximizes your leisure time. This makes it a perfect spot for spontaneous weekend trips or for those who want to avoid long, arduous drives to more remote campgrounds.
Ukiah itself, the county seat of Mendocino County, provides essential services, including grocery stores, gas stations, and other necessities, ensuring that campers can easily restock supplies. The short distance from the campground to town means that any forgotten items or sudden needs are easily addressed, adding to the overall convenience of staying at Bushay Recreation Area. Even for those coming from as far south as Santa Cruz, as one reviewer mentioned, the drive north of San Francisco to Ukiah for this "nice getaway" proved worthwhile, showcasing its draw for a broader regional audience in California.
Bushay Recreation Area truly shines when it comes to the services and amenities it offers, going above and beyond typical campground provisions:
Free Firewood: A standout feature highly praised by campers is the availability of "free firewood all around the campgrounds." This eliminates the need to pack or purchase wood, making campfires effortless and enjoyable.
Free Showers: Another exceptional amenity is the provision of "free showers (no need for quarters)." This is a significant comfort for campers, allowing for a refreshing clean-up without extra cost or hassle, a luxury not found in many campgrounds.
Super Clean and Well-Lit Bathrooms: The restrooms receive high marks for being "super clean and well lit." This attention to cleanliness and safety in shared facilities greatly enhances the overall camping experience.
Standard Campsite Setup: Each site offers a "standard campsite setup (bench + fire ring)," providing the basic necessities for a comfortable stay.
Versatile Pole with Hook: A unique and highly practical addition to each campsite is "a pole with a hook - perfect for hanging lights, a tarp, drying dishware, etc." This thoughtful detail demonstrates an understanding of camper needs.
Regular Ranger Patrols: The presence of a "Ranger patrolling often" contributes significantly to a sense of safety and security, especially appreciated by solo campers or small groups.
Grassy Campsites: Unlike many campgrounds with hard dirt sites, Bushay offers "cushion of the grassy campsites," providing a softer and more pleasant surface for tents and relaxation.
Advanced Reservation Required: It's important to note that "Advanced reservation is required," ensuring organized occupancy and preventing overcrowding.
Beyond the impressive list of services, Bushay Recreation Area boasts several features and highlights that truly elevate the camping experience for locals:
Friendly Community Atmosphere: Several campers noted that "Everyone else staying the weekend was very friendly and helpful," fostering a welcoming and communal vibe among visitors.
Lush and Beautiful Grounds: Even with predicted rain, one camper found the campsite to be "so much more lush and beautiful," indicating that the natural landscaping is well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing, despite some trees having been removed due to disease by the Army Corps of Engineers.
Lake Access: While the lake level was noted as "really low" by one reviewer, the presence of a lake (likely Lake Mendocino, given the address on Marina Drive) offers potential for water-based activities such as fishing, kayaking, or simply enjoying the lakeside scenery when conditions allow. Regardless of water levels, the proximity to a large body of water adds to the scenic value.
Wildlife Observation: The natural setting provides opportunities for wildlife viewing, with campers reporting the "sound of frogs and turkeys" and even spotting "tons of fascinating birds (including a bald eagle!!)," making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
Dedicated Staff and Customer Care: The story of an employee reaching out about forgotten camping chairs exemplifies exceptional customer service and a caring approach by the campground staff, building trust and loyalty.
Quiet and Peaceful Environment: Despite being easily accessible, the campground can become "pretty much empty by Sun (workweek + predicted rain)," indicating opportunities for a very quiet and peaceful experience, especially during off-peak times.

Bushay Recreation Area Reviews
- Easy to access, right off the 101- Free firewood all around the campgrounds- Free showers (no need for quarters)- Super clean and well lit bathrooms- Ranger patrolling often (we are 2 young women, this helped us feel a little safer)- Standard campsite setup (bench + fire ring) but also included a pole with a hook - perfect for hanging lights, a tarp, drying dishware, etc.- Heads up! Advanced reservation is requiredSince my friend and I decided to plan a last minute camping trip, reservations were hard to find anywhere. I'm from Santa Cruz and hardly ever make it north of San Francisco so Bushay Campground sounded like a nice getaway. However I was a little hesitant since there were so many open sites here and mixed reviews but it really was just too perfect. We stayed Sat-Mon and it was pretty much empty by Sun (workweek + predicted rain). Everyone else staying the weekend was very friendly and helpful. The rain only made the campsite so much more lush and beautiful and luckily we were prepared for the rain. The sound of frogs and turkeys added a nice touch and we also saw tons of fascinating birds (including a bald eagle!!). I'm used to camping on hard dirt so the cushion of the grassy campsites was really nice, plus the dead grass served as decent tinder. Also, I accidentally left my camping chairs behind :( and an employee reached out to me to let me know! I wish it wasn't a 3+ hour drive for me because I would love to already head back lol.
Apr 01, 2022 · Maddy SalazarWe stayed for 4 nights, although the lake is still really low, we still had a great time! The grounds were clean, but would have been nice to have had a string trimmer. 😁Restrooms are well kept. They Army Corp have been quite busy, and many trees have been removed due to disease. It was very nice!
Apr 02, 2022 · iRacer99Why is Boucher Campground closed? This is an amazing spot. Bring the lake level down so I can go to my campground, please
Jun 08, 2025 · Michael PetersNice spot near the lake one thing tho there's absolutely no where to fish they advertise it but you can't get to the shore from anywhere.
May 30, 2018 · Alex SacchettiWarm and sunny. Took the kayaks out for 4 hours. The road to the camp ground was still flooded so it was interesting to be floating where wed normally be driving.
