Bogan Flats Campground is located near Carbondale, CO 81623, USA. Specifically, it stretches along the Crystal River in the White River National Forest. To reach the campground, you typically take Highway 133 south from Carbondale for approximately 20 miles. Then, you'll turn left onto Gunnison County Road 3 (also known as Marble Road) towards the town of Marble. The campground is located about 1.5 miles down this road, near the river. This location places it conveniently about 10 minutes from both the quaint towns of Marble and Redstone, allowing for easy day trips to explore local attractions, shops, and unique history. However, it's about a 40-minute drive back to the larger town of Carbondale for more extensive supplies. The drive itself offers scenic views through aspen groves, towering Ponderosa Pines, and spruce trees. While the campground roads are generally paved, some internal roads or spurs might be less maintained. It's important to note that cell service is typically not available at the campground, offering a true opportunity to disconnect and immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. This combination of seclusion and accessibility to charming mountain towns makes Bogan Flats a favored spot for Colorado adventurers.
Bogan Flats Campground offers a well-maintained suite of services and facilities, making it a comfortable and enjoyable camping destination.
- Online Reservations (Recreation.gov): Bogan Flats Campground is primarily on a reservation system via Recreation.gov. This means that while some "open" sites might occasionally be available on a first-come, first-served basis (often for single-night stays), securing a spot, especially during peak season or for multiple nights, requires booking well in advance.
- Campsite Variety: The campground features 35 large single-family campsites and one group site (accommodating up to 50 people), stretching along the Crystal River. Sites can accommodate tents, trailers, and RVs (with lengths from 20 to 55 feet, some up to 80 feet).
- Picnic Tables and Fire Rings/Grills: Each individual campsite is equipped with a large picnic table and a fire ring, often including a grill, for outdoor cooking and enjoyable campfires (subject to fire bans).
- Clean Vault Toilets: Visitors consistently praise the "super clean and honestly didn’t even smell that bad" vault toilets. These well-maintained, odor-free facilities are a significant amenity for a national forest campground.
- Drinking Water: Potable drinking water is available from faucets in the main campground area, typically about a third of a mile away from some sites, ensuring access to fresh water.
- Bear Boxes/Food Lockers: Large, sturdy "bear boxes" are provided at each site for secure food storage, crucial given the active wildlife in the area and necessary for adhering to bear precautions.
- Trash Collection: Unlike more primitive sites, Bogan Flats offers trash collection, making it convenient for campers to dispose of their waste properly.
- Firewood for Sale: Firewood is typically available for sale from the camp host, making it easy to enjoy a campfire without having to bring your own.
- Camp Host On-Site: A friendly and helpful camp host, such as "Mike" mentioned in reviews, is present to assist campers, enforce regulations, and provide local information.
Bogan Flats Campground boasts several features and highlights that contribute to its high regard among campers.
- Riverfront Sites: Many campsites are located directly along the Crystal River, offering the soothing "sound of the river at night" and picturesque views. This waterside location is a major draw for tranquility and enjoyment.
- Scenic Valley Setting: The campground is set in a beautiful valley amidst aspen groves, towering Ponderosa Pines, spruce, and willow, surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks. This provides a stunning and diverse natural environment.
- Excellent Fly Fishing: The Crystal River is renowned for its fly fishing, with plentiful populations of rainbow, cutthroat, and brown trout, making it a "favorite among fishers."
- Spacious and Private Sites: Sites are described as "large" and "nicely kept," with "plenty of room between them," offering a good sense of privacy. They also provide a nice mixture of open and shaded spots.
- Proximity to Marble and Redstone: Its location offers easy access to the historic marble mill ruins and a still-operating quarry in Marble, as well as the quaint town of Redstone with its shops, galleries, and historic castle.
- Wildlife Viewing: The White River National Forest abounds with wildlife, including bighorn sheep and elk, offering opportunities for wildlife viewing, though visitors must observe bear precautions.
- Access to Trails: The area provides ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking (such as the challenging Mt. Sopris hike), mountain biking, horseback riding, and jeep tours.
- Family-Friendly Atmosphere: With spacious sites, amenities, and recreational opportunities, it's a welcoming environment for families, though not specifically mentioned, the presence of a group site points to accommodating larger parties.

Bogan Flats Campground Reviews
If you're more inclined towards first-come first-serve campgrounds like myself, be forewarned that this now privatized campground is now (and has been for quite awhile I'm told) on a system utilizing online reservations via rec.gov (ie 'wreckyourplans.gov'), and gives preference to those who are better at planning well in advance than I. All that to say, I arrived here on a Monday in our tow behind tent camper with my two sub-highschool aged daughters and our dog; looking down on the campground on the drive in it appeared there was an RV convention going on and I had my doubts we'd find a site; I was happy to find a few with an 'open' sign on the post and claimed one for the next 3 nights paying with cash deposited via envelope into the campground fee station cylinder; coming back to camp after one night having spent all day away, I find a hand written note advising that I need to touch base with the campground host; he/Mike was nice enough, and explained to me that the site we claimed had been reserved online by someone who arrived to find their reserved site occupied by our tent camper starting on what would have been our 2nd night; at first it sounded like he expected us to take immediate action and move our camper to a different 'open' site; he explained that first come first serve open sites can only be claimed for one night at a time; he ended up giving us a little time and leeway saying he found another site for the online camper that they were content with allowing us to stay put for night #2 but that we would absolutely have to vacate the site first thing the next morning; we complied with the request which was a hassle to say the least. So here is where my gripe comes in: we woke up earlier than we wanted to so as to pack up/hook-up/move the camper to one of the 'open for one night' sites (which happened to be adjacent to the site we were leaving); we were gone all day again with activities and returned that afternoon to find the site still vacant; Mike the camp host came by and I asked him what happened to the online camper that was supposed to be occupying their reserved site; he didn't have a good answer and sheepishly acknowledged this situation could potentially reflect poorly on him if this camper didn't materialize; well, in fact no one showed that evening and when we woke the next day the site remained unoccupied. (Insert dissatisfied face emoji).
Jun 12, 2025 · Michael HibbardLoved this campground! The bathrooms were super clean and honestly didn’t even smell that bad. The location is great- only 10 min to marble or redstone, but about 40 to Carbondale. The sound of the river at night is awesome. Huge bear boxes to store all your food and such. Big picnic tables. The lower numbers seem to have more shade than most of the higher numbers!
Jun 25, 2024 · Kali LI was delighted to finally get a reservation at this campground for the first time several weeks ago. The campground is well kept with no sign of trash and the bathrooms were all super clean. I was lucky to meet the camp hosts on my first camping trip a few weeks ago, and just enjoyed my second camping trip at Bogan Flats this past week and looked forward to friendly chatter with the camp hosts. The Wisdoms, Lori and Alva, are the most friendly camp hosts and again made my second weekend trip another pleasure. I look forward to their smiling faces my next camping trip Bogan Flats in the next couple of months. This quiet campground is nestled in the pine trees and has drinking water and many restrooms. This campground is minutes from busy Redstone and Marble.
