While some visitors have noted specific challenges, such as uneven site pads or varying levels of privacy, these experiences offer valuable insights that can help you plan your perfect trip. This article aims to provide you with all the details you need to ensure a smooth and enjoyable stay, highlighting the best features and practical tips for making the most of your time at Bidwell Canyon Campground. Get ready to discover why this spot is a go-to for many California families and outdoor lovers.
Bidwell Canyon Campground is ideally situated at 801 Bidwell Canyon Rd, Oroville, CA 95966, USA. This location places it directly on the southern shore of Lake Oroville, within the Lake Oroville State Recreation Area. Its proximity to Oroville, California, makes it easily accessible for many residents across Northern California, being a convenient drive from cities like Sacramento, Chico, and Redding.
The accessibility of Bidwell Canyon Campground is one of its strong points. The campground is directly reachable by paved roads, allowing for easy navigation for all types of vehicles, including large RVs and trailers. Reviewers specifically mention that "sites are paved, as is the road," which contributes to a smoother arrival and setup. The campground is divided into two main loops, Big Pine Campground (sites 1-39) and Gold Flat Campground (sites 40-75), both located on either side of the marina, adjacent to the boat launch ramps. This setup provides excellent access for those looking to get their boats onto the lake quickly.
While the paved surfaces enhance accessibility, it is important to note, as some campers have pointed out, that some sites can be "very uneven, slanted more than 6 inches over 25 feet." This feedback is crucial for RVers, suggesting that bringing leveling blocks or "legos and jack blocks" is a wise precaution, and checking site descriptions or reviews for specific site numbers (like the recommendation for space #28) can greatly improve your experience. Despite these potential variations in site levelness, the overall accessibility to and within the campground by vehicle is excellent, making it a convenient choice for families and those with larger camping setups. The well-marked signage, mentioned by happy campers, also helps in navigating the campground with ease.
Bidwell Canyon Campground offers a comprehensive range of services designed to enhance comfort and convenience for all campers, from tent enthusiasts to RVers with large rigs.
- Campsites with Full Hookups: A significant highlight is that "All the sites have full hook-ups" (electrical, water, and sewer). This makes it particularly attractive for RV and trailer owners, ensuring a comfortable stay with essential utilities readily available.

- Hot Showers: The campground provides showers with hot water, though some reviews indicate that "you make you buy tokens for the showers," which is a common practice at many state park campgrounds to conserve water.
- RV Dump Station: A dedicated RV dump station is available for waste disposal, providing a convenient service for RV users.
- Potable Drinking Water: Faucets for drinking water are accessible throughout the campground.

The adjacent boat launch ramps and marina facilities are a major draw.
- Paved Roads and Sites: The paved infrastructure throughout the campground and at each site offers a clean, well-maintained feel and easy maneuvering for RVs and trailers.
- Shaded Campsites: As noted by a reviewer, some sites, like space 26, are "totally shaded throughout the day," providing welcome relief from California's sun, especially during warmer months.
- Pet-Friendly (Designated Areas): Pets are generally allowed in parking lots, paved roadways, and campgrounds, providing an option for those traveling with their furry companions (though restrictions apply on trails or beaches).
- Proximity to Natural Attractions: The campground serves as a gateway to exploring the surrounding hills, offering opportunities for hiking and exploring. It's also close to popular natural landmarks like Table Mountain (known for its spring wildflowers) and Feather Falls, providing diverse outdoor activities beyond just the lake.
- Wildlife Viewing Opportunities: The natural setting allows for sightings of local wildlife. While one review described a less-than-ideal encounter with a black bear, it underscores the real wilderness experience available (and the importance of using bear boxes). Deer sightings, including fawns, also add to the natural charm.
- Year-Round Operation: Bidwell Canyon Campground is open year-round, making it a flexible option for campers outside of peak summer months.
- Cleanliness and Ranger Presence: Campers frequently praise the cleanliness of the facilities and the presence of "friendly park rangers," who contribute to a welcoming and safe environment.

Bidwell Canyon Campground Reviews
This is our first time being here checked in on a Sunday and woke up to this on Monday morning. Will certainly come back here to stay one more time. We stayed in space 26 totally shaded throughout the day a little uneven as far as the surrounding area, so we looked at space 28 and I think that’s where we will book our next day, more even and less downhill sloping
Jun 02, 2025 · Denise M SmithSites are paved, as is the road. Unfortunately the sites are very uneven, slanted more than 6 inches over 25 feet. The reservation site should alert campers because we could not get level, even with legos and jack blocks. There were no other spots available. Also, there's apparently no limit to the number of people and tents allowed on a fulll hookup RV site. Our "front porch" which is the right side of the camper looked onto a tent city next door- 5 large tents, 2 screen rooms 2 extra tables, a dog pen and a hammock hung in the trees. Not a good camping experience. And they make you buy tokens for the showers. Won't be back.
Jun 21, 2025 · Cathy DehoffWe stayed for 3 days at the Big Pine Site at number 52. It was an awesome spot, very secluded, and right next to the water, and had so much space. Stay away from the sites in the middle of the campground, they are very close together and have almost no room for anything. Every site has a table and fire pit. Theres also a gas station and dollar general very close by that has anything you could need if you forgot something. Wood, charcoal, snacks, ice, etc. The camp is very nice, quiet, and we almost never saw anyone, the camp was almost empty despite being end of June. I would say though that it’s not much of a swimming lake. More for boating or fishing. You can rent boats and kayaks at the marina. But the water smells awful, and will make you smell bad too if you swim in it 😭 Some of the sites also have full hookups for RVs and such, but we used it for blow up mattresses.
Jul 02, 2024 · Rayne CutchallFirst time here because meeting family & they picked it. Definitely not my idea of relaxing camping, but since the campground was full, others obviously like it. Campground in located in a residential area. Sites are very close together, very loud with people playing music & then talking/cussing over it. Kids fighting, crying & throwing tantrums. Dogs barking and people riding motorcycles continuously around loop giving rides. Felt more like a festival atmosphere. Cost is $45/day, plus $7.99 for placing reservation and that only includes 1 vehicle. You can have 1 additional vehicle for another $8/day. Sites include electricity, water and sewer, but no discount if you are not using it.With all that said, it is close to the water, nice views, bathrooms were kept clean and well stocked and showers are available to use by purchasing tokens.
Sep 03, 2023 · Ann NelsonNo firewood to buy at the Marina. People are ruse with kids there. Pretty place. Lake is full. Sad thing, no beach entry, unless you have a boat.
