Beautiful place to stay BUT the people around us were not very considerate of other campers. Loud and annoying barking dogs all day and the owners weren't any better. We had 3 dogs and you wouldn't know it if you didn't see them outside on a leash. If you want to stay here, just keep in mind the weather and holidays. We stayed the week of New Year's and it was told to us they were planning a big party that night so we took off before all of that started! - Outdoorgurl24

Barrington County Park is located on Barrington Road, Townsend, GA 31331, USA. This address places it directly on the banks of the mighty Altamaha River in McIntosh County, Georgia. For residents across Georgia, particularly those in the southeastern part of the state, its accessibility is a significant advantage. Townsend is easily reached via major state routes, making the journey to the park straightforward and convenient.

It's important for visitors to note that while the park offers a wonderful experience, it has recently undergone or is currently undergoing significant improvements. As of early 2024, the park was "temporarily closed for construction," with plans for extensive upgrades including a new bathhouse, power and lighting, a well and septic system, new concrete pads for RV sites, resurfacing of the boat ramp, and a new fishing pier. Therefore, it is highly recommended to call ahead or check the McIntosh County Parks & Recreation website for the most current operating status and accessibility. The recommended route to the campground is to "Take Townsend/Cox Road to the intersection with Barrington Road (avoid Orchard & Cemetery Roads). Take Barrington Road to Barrington Park Road." This guidance helps ensure a smooth arrival, avoiding any dead-end roads. Its riverfront location means immediate access to the Altamaha, a significant advantage for those keen on water activities. The convenience of its location for Georgians allows for more time enjoying the river and park, rather than extended travel.

Barrington County Park, particularly with its ongoing and planned improvements, offers a range of services designed to enhance the camping and recreational experience. Based on past amenities and future plans, here's what you can expect:

  • Diverse Campsite Options: The park offers camping for both RVs and tents. Reviews indicate "lots of spots right by the water." While not explicitly detailed, plans include "pouring concrete pads for back-in RV sites," suggesting dedicated, improved RV spots.
  • Clean and Free Hot Showers: A notable service highlighted in reviews is that "Shower is hot and free." While one past review mentioned them being "old and looks dirty" and having "no doors, only curtains," new construction plans explicitly include "constructing a new bathhouse with two restrooms and showers for both men and women," indicating a significant upgrade to these facilities.
  • Restroom Facilities: Alongside showers, new restrooms are part of the planned bathhouse construction, replacing older facilities.
  • Easy River Access with Boat Ramp: The park features a "boat ramp" and "kayak launch," providing direct and easy access to the Altamaha River for various watercraft. Plans include "Resurfacing the boat ramp."
  • Fishing Pier: Plans include a "new aluminum fishing pier with seating stations," enhancing opportunities for anglers.
  • Picnic Amenities: The park offers "Picnic Tables / Benches" and likely includes designated picnic areas.
  • Pet-Friendly Policy: Reviews indicate the park is "pet friendly," allowing campers to bring their furry companions, although responsible pet ownership (leashing, cleaning up) is expected.
  • Improved Infrastructure: Ongoing work includes "installation of power and lighting throughout the park," "installation of water lines to the campsites," and "underground conduit for future installation of electrical transformers, lighting, a security gate, and a pump-out station." These are significant upgrades to core services.
  • Cell Service: One review noted "ok AT&T service here," suggesting some mobile connectivity is available.

Barrington County Park is valued for several key features and highlights that contribute to its appeal as a camping and recreational destination in Georgia:

  • Beautiful Riverfront Location: The park is situated in a "Beautiful place to stay" directly on the Altamaha River, offering scenic views and immediate access to one of Georgia's major waterways. This is a significant draw for nature lovers and water enthusiasts.
  • Pet-Friendly Environment: Being "pet friendly" is a major highlight for many campers, allowing them to bring their dogs along for the adventure, contributing to a more inclusive family experience.
  • Opportunities for Water Activities: The "nice river" provides avenues for fishing, boating, and kayaking, making it an ideal spot for those who enjoy being on or by the water. The boat ramp is a crucial feature for this.
  • Upcoming Modernized Facilities: The ongoing construction of a "new bathhouse with two restrooms and showers," as well as "new aluminum fishing pier," signifies a significant upgrade. This will improve comfort and overall experience once completed, addressing previous concerns about older facilities.
  • Potential for Quiet Relaxation: While some past holiday experiences involved noise, the park is generally described as "quite" by other visitors, suggesting that outside of peak celebration times, it offers a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation. Its location within a county park setting, rather than a dense commercial campground, contributes to this.
  • Easy Access to Nature: Beyond the river itself, the general area offers opportunities to enjoy the natural surroundings, whether through quiet walks or simply taking in the riverside views.
  • Value for Money: As a county park, it often offers a more affordable camping option compared to private resorts, making it an attractive choice for those on a budget.
