Anchor Bay Campground Introduce
For us Californians, there's a special magic in the meeting of towering redwoods and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. Anchor Bay Campground in Gualala embodies this quintessential Northern California experience, offering a truly unique and cherished beachfront getaway. This isn't just a place to park your RV or pitch a tent; it's a multi-generational destination where families have created cherished memories for decades, and new visitors are welcomed into a community that values safety, serenity, and the sheer beauty of the coast.
Anchor Bay Campground stands out as a prime location for a beach escape, where "majestic redwoods opening up to sunny skies and a serene south facing beach" perfectly describes the enchanting environment. Visitors consistently praise the "top tier hospitality" of the staff, particularly mentioning hosts like Tracy and Chris, who are lauded for their hard work and for making guests feel truly at home. This dedication to service cultivates a rare "sense of stewardship and ownership" among its long-standing visitors, contributing to an exceptionally pleasant and safe atmosphere. While some sites might feel cozy, the immediate access to the private, half-mile long beach, with its continuously changing sands, tide pools, and "shimmering crashing waves," provides an unparalleled backdrop for relaxation and exploration. Falling asleep to the soothing sound of the ocean is a highlight that many campers mention, reinforcing why this unique property holds a "gold medal" status for a quality coastal experience in California.
Anchor Bay Campground is conveniently located at 35400 S Hwy 1, Gualala, CA 95445, USA, directly on the iconic California Highway 1. This strategic position places it right on the Pacific Ocean along Mendocino County's scenic coastline, offering unparalleled ocean views and immediate beach access. It's nestled in a narrow gulch surrounded by native redwood trees, ferns, and coastal flora, providing a unique blend of forest and beach environments.
Accessibility to Anchor Bay Campground is generally good, as it's directly off Highway 1. However, potential visitors, especially those with larger RVs or trailers, should be advised that the drive-in can be "very tight" and the campground has had to turn away large vehicles in the past. It's noted that a majority of their spots can host 22ft-30ft trailers, but not all sites are full hook-up, and only one beach site reportedly has a sewer connection. For those arriving from the south, Highway 1 can be a winding and challenging drive, particularly for large rigs, so caution is advised. The campground's location is just down the hill from the community of Anchor Bay, which provides easy walking access to essential amenities like a grocery store (Anchor Bay Store, often noted for organic options), a coffee shop (The White Cap Cafe), and even a highly-rated Thai restaurant, making it convenient to grab supplies or a meal without needing to drive.
- Full Hookup RV Sites: Many sites offer essential hookups, including water and electricity. Some sites may also offer sewer connections, though it's noted that not all beach spots have full hook-ups, and only one has a sewer connection.
- Water-Only Sites: Some of the prime beach-front sites on the bulkhead offer water hookups but no power or sewer, perfect for a more rustic, yet still comfortable, beach camping experience.
- Tent Camping: The campground accommodates tent camping, with some sites specifically located in the redwoods offering a more shaded and private experience.
- Clean Restrooms: Visitors consistently praise the cleanliness and maintenance of the campground's bathrooms and flush toilets.
- Coin-Operated Showers: Hot showers are available, typically coin-operated, providing a convenient way to clean up after a day at the beach or exploring.
- Fish Cleaning Station: For anglers, a dedicated fish cleaning station is available, which is a significant amenity for those hoping to catch their dinner.
- Camp Store: The on-site office often functions as a small store, selling essentials like bait, ice, firewood, snacks, T-shirts, and even beach toys for kids.
- Laundry Facilities: A coin-operated laundromat is available in Anchor Bay Village, just a short walk up the hill from the campground.
- Wi-Fi: Some reviews mention good Wi-Fi availability, which can be a valuable service, especially for those who need to stay connected.
- Top-Tier Hospitality and Camp Hosts: The staff and camp hosts (like Tracy and Chris) are consistently highlighted for their friendliness, helpfulness, and hard work, making guests feel welcome and at home.
- Private Beach Access: Anchor Bay Campground boasts its own secluded, half-mile-long private beach, Anchor Bay Beach, which is south-facing and dog-friendly (allowing off-leash play). This is a rare and highly valued feature on the California coast.
- Stunning Coastal Views: The campground offers "magnificent" views of the Pacific Ocean, with sunsets that are consistently described as breathtaking. Four specific sites are directly on the bulkhead of the beach, providing prime viewing.
- Redwood Forest Setting: While offering beach access, the campground is also situated amidst towering redwood trees, ferns, and coastal flora, providing a beautiful, natural, and often shaded environment for many sites.
- Multi-Generational Community Feel: The campground has a rich history of families returning for generations, creating a unique sense of stewardship, ownership, and a welcoming community atmosphere.
- Variety of Activities: The location is perfect for a wide range of activities, including beachcombing, tide pooling, sunbathing, surfing, boogie boarding, skim boarding, jogging, fishing (shore and boat), crabbing, sea kayaking (with easy launch access), and whale watching during migration seasons.
- Proximity to Anchor Bay Village: A short walking path leads up to Anchor Bay Village, which offers a grocery store, coffee shop, and a highly-rated Thai restaurant, adding convenience to the secluded feel.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite being a popular destination, the campground is often described as "quiet, peaceful, and family-oriented," with the soothing sound of crashing waves as a natural soundtrack.
- Fish Rock Gulch History: The area has a fascinating history, with Fish Rock Gulch having been a hub for shipping and trade in the early 20th century, adding a layer of historical interest.

Anchor Bay Campground Reviews
I can not stress this enough... Enjoy one of the most prime locations for a beach getaway. Leave the troubles behind and set your sights on majestic redwoods opening up to sunny skies and a serene south facing beach with miles of continuously changing sands, tide pools, nooks and shimmering crashing waves that roll on shore washing away the days woes. Backed by top tier hospitality, expect your stay to be seamlessly pleasant.Be advised though... This more than a century old property has generations of families that call this place home away from home. With that comes a sense of stewardship and ownership that you rarely find at other camp grounds. For those families and us fortunate enough to enjoy this site, the idea is quality over quantity. Out of bounds individuals and questionable behaviors are not taken kindly, a high value for safety and serenity is what makes this property take the gold medal IMHO.Happy trails and full sails.

May 20, 2025 · E M CopeBeen heading up to Anchor Bay for a couple of years now, and absolutely love this place! The campgrounds up at the top are nestled amongst the redwoods, a quiet and peaceful spot when they’re available, even with hwy 1 running behind it (daytime noise isn’t bad and when sun sets, hwy gets very quiet). We haven’t tried the sea wall yet, but you will get great sounds and a view of the ocean. Chris and Traci do a fantastic job making the campers feel welcome and appreciated. They and their crew keep the grounds clean and maintained, as well as shutting down potential issues quickly. They are always friendly and are a pleasure to be around. Looking forward to our next trip!
