Alder Glen Recreation Site is located on Nestucca River Rd, Beaver, OR 97108, USA. This prime location places it deep within Oregon's beautiful Coast Range, directly along the banks of the newly designated Nestucca Wild and Scenic River. It is also situated along the Nestucca River National Back Country Byway, a scenic route that winds leisurely through the captivating landscape, offering continuous opportunities for appreciation of the area's natural beauty.
Accessibility to Alder Glen Recreation Site is straightforward for Oregon locals. The campground is approximately 17 miles east of Beaver, Oregon, a small town conveniently located off U.S. Highway 101 on the Oregon Coast. From Beaver, visitors head east on Blaine Road, which then transitions into NF-85/Upper Nestucca Rd, finally becoming Nestucca River Rd. The campground will be found on the right side of the road. While the route involves driving on well-maintained forest roads through the Coast Range, it's generally an easy and scenic drive from coastal towns like Tillamook or even from the Willamette Valley (around 1 hour 30 minutes from Portland). One important aspect to note for modern travelers is that "cell service is not available in the drainage," offering a genuine opportunity to disconnect from the electronic age. This enhances the sense of being truly "away from the hustle and bustle" and allows for a deeper immersion in the tranquil surroundings. The byway itself is open year-round, although conditions, especially due to snow and ice, can be hazardous during winter months, making the main camping season from mid-May to mid-November.
Alder Glen Recreation Site, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), provides a range of essential services designed to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable primitive camping experience. While it focuses on connecting campers with nature, it doesn't sacrifice necessary conveniences.
- Campsites: The campground offers 11 individual campsites, many of which are situated directly along the Nestucca River, providing private river access. Each site is well-equipped with a picnic table, a fire ring with a grill, and a paved parking spur (ranging from 15 to 90 feet, accommodating tents, trailers, and RVs). Mature trees offer good shade to most sites.
- Potable Drinking Water: A centralized well provides potable drinking water, which is a significant amenity for a more rustic campground. However, visitors should be aware that potable water may be turned off during months with reduced sunlight (e.g., off-season), so bringing your own water is always a good backup plan.
- Vault Toilets: The campground features two clean and well-maintained vault toilets, ensuring basic restroom facilities are available for campers. Reviews consistently praise the cleanliness of these facilities.
- Trash Collection: While some sources indicate "pack-it-in pack-it-out" for trash, others mention "trash collection" via containers. It's always best practice to be prepared to pack out all your trash to minimize impact.
- Accessible Features: The campground boasts an accessible trail leading to a fishing/viewing platform along the river, making it more inclusive for visitors with varying mobility needs.
- On-Site Camp Host: Alder Glen Recreation Site typically has a dedicated camp host during the operating season. These hosts, as exemplified by the touching memorial to Troy and Gina, play a crucial role in maintaining the campground's pristine condition, providing assistance, and fostering a welcoming atmosphere.
- Firewood Sales: A full-time camp host often sells "cheap wood," making it convenient for campers to enjoy a campfire (always check for current fire bans and restrictions, especially during dry periods).
Alder Glen Recreation Site is distinguished by several unique features and highlights that contribute to its reputation as a beloved spot for Oregon locals. Its natural setting and the care put into its management create a truly special atmosphere.
- Direct Nestucca River Access: A major highlight is the immediate and often private access to the Nestucca River from many campsites. This makes it a premier destination for "fishing and swimming," and provides the soothing "sounds of water" that contribute to the campground's quiet charm.
- Exceptional Dog-Friendliness: It's lauded as "one of the best dog friendly places," welcoming furry family members to enjoy the outdoor experience alongside their owners. This is a significant draw for Oregonians who love to include their pets in their adventures.
- Quiet and Peaceful Atmosphere: Despite its popularity, the campground maintains a "nice and quiet" ambiance, offering a serene escape from the daily grind and electronic noise (due to lack of cell service).
- Pristine Cleanliness: Consistently praised for its "clean bathroom" and overall "pristinely clean and tidy" grounds, Alder Glen sets a high standard for maintained public land, enhancing the comfort of all visitors.
- Renowned Fishing Opportunities: The Nestucca River is famous for its excellent fishing, particularly for steelhead trout and Chinook salmon. The campground's accessible fishing/viewing platform further enhances this activity. Non-motorized watercraft like kayaks and canoes are permitted, perfect for accessing prime fishing spots.
- Scenic Coast Range Setting: Surrounded by a lush "coastal forest," primarily alder and maple trees, the campground offers a beautiful natural backdrop for photographers and wildlife viewers. The Nestucca Wild and Scenic River adds to the picturesque scenery.
- Personalized Host Experience: The deeply touching review highlights the extraordinary care and kindness of the camp hosts, like Troy and Gina. Their dedication to making campers feel welcome and their thoughtful gestures (like informing campers about fire bans being lifted) create a uniquely warm and inviting atmosphere.
- Proximity to OHV Trails: For those with Off-Highway Vehicles, the Upper Nestucca OHV Area is located nearby off the Nestucca Backcountry Byway, offering 24 miles of trails for ATVs and motorcycles (Oregon ATV permits required).

Alder Glen Recreation Site Reviews
One of the best dog friendly places I've ever been! The campground was nice and quiet, clean bathroom, easy water access at certain sites.
Oct 09, 2024 · Deanna JThis review of Alder Glen Campground goes out as a dedication and memorial to our good friends, Troy, who recently was called home to heaven and his wife, Gina, the greatest and nicest campground Hosts and most lovely people we have ever have met! Sadly, Troy passed away unexpectedly while doing what he loved the most, living, working for the BLM and being in the woods at Alder Glen Campground on the Nestucca River. It was his favorite place on earth. He was the hardest working BLM Host and kept the campground pristinely, clean and tidy and made friends with everyone that stayed here. He came to our camp site #11, especially to tell us when the fire ban had been lifted, after a day of rain, so we could be the first campers to have a campfire! He knew we were chilly for the first 3 days camping with just our propane bbq grill to keep us warm! He was the kindest, most caring man! His, lovely wife Gina made us a blackberry cobbler from the wild berries on the bridge and we remember her catching her very first trout ever on the river, out of camp site #9, and running up to our camp site #11 to show us her catch! Troy had just taught her how to fish with a lure and she was so proud of her success! We will have the most fondest memories of Troy and Gina that will last forever in our hearts! Our sincere condolences, Love and Prayers of comfort goes out especially to you, Gina, our good friend and their family, friends and loved ones. We Love you and will miss you, Troy! May God Bless You and rest your soul in the forests of Heaven! With Love and gratitude, Charlie and Katrina Wright in Campsite #11 at Alder Glen Campground. 😇🙏✝️🌲🌲🌳🌳🐿️🏞️⛺🏕️🥾🔥🐟🎣🌲🌲🌳🌳💔😭😢🥺🤗💖💞
Oct 01, 2023 · Katrina WrightClean campsites, vault toilets that are much cleaner than most I've been to, & potable water. Very quiet with a lot of wooded area between most sites. Easy access to the river and waterfall.
Jul 13, 2019 · Maddox MilamIt's beautiful next to the river with a beautiful waterfall on one end of the campground. There was a campsite that had the best view of it that would have been amazing to have. The bathroom was out of toilet paper (which was fine since we had our own) and it definitely needed to be dumped.
May 21, 2022 · Nyssa CardwellVery clean, quiet & relaxing. Bathrooms were nicely kept too. Definitely recommending to others & we will be back.
