Acadiana Park Campground

1201 E Alexander St, Lafayette, LA 70501, USA

A hidden gem! We spent one night here on our way home from Florida. We didn’t expect much, but were very surprised by how clean the park is, how nice the amenities are huge kids playground, boardwalk thru the bayou and nature center, clean yet basic shower rooms and of course huge oak trees. It’s full of Louisiana Acadian character. The friendly park manager Jared, came over to our site and told us how he is on a mission to bring the park back to be the attraction it once was. If you’re passing the area and need a nice, inexpensive ($28) night stay or in the area for some time, I’d give this park a try. BTW- Definitely call ahead as the manager isn’t always on site, but he can arrange for you to get into the park if you call first. - Jarrett and Cindy Lambert

Acadiana Park Campground Introduce

For us Louisianians, finding a tranquil escape that offers both natural beauty and convenient access to local culture is like striking gold. Acadiana Park Campground in Lafayette truly embodies this ideal, offering a delightful surprise for anyone seeking a peaceful and affordable outdoor experience right in the heart of Acadiana. Often described as a "hidden gem," this city park campground provides a refreshing blend of well-maintained facilities, abundant shade from huge oak trees, and a deep connection to Louisiana's unique Acadian character.

Whether you're just passing through on a road trip or looking for an extended stay to explore Lafayette and its surroundings, Acadiana Park Campground consistently exceeds expectations. With a dedicated park manager on a mission to restore its former glory, the campground is not just a place to sleep; it's a gateway to outdoor adventure, educational opportunities, and a truly authentic taste of our state's charm. Let's explore what makes Acadiana Park Campground a must-visit for locals and visitors alike.

Location and Accessibility

Acadiana Park Campground is conveniently located at 1201 E Alexander St, Lafayette, LA 70501, USA. Its strategic position within Lafayette makes it remarkably accessible while still offering a sense of seclusion and immersion in nature. The campground is nestled within the larger Acadiana Park, a sprawling 117-acre facility that includes various recreational amenities.

Accessing the campground is generally straightforward from major routes like I-10. From I-10, you can take Exit 103-A (US-90 E or US-167 S) towards Lafayette, then follow directions for local streets that lead to E. Alexander Street. Visitors should look for the "Acadiana Park Campground and Nature Station" sign and turn into the park. It's important to note that the campground has a gated entry, and while a park manager or host might not always be on-site, it's highly recommended to call ahead to arrange entry or obtain the gate code, especially for after-hours arrivals. The park's inner roads are mostly paved, though some sections, particularly leading to specific sites or the dump station, have been noted as needing a little repaving or leveling, which is a consideration for longer RVs. The campground is generally quiet, though some reviews mention highway noise or activity from the upper park on weekends, which typically quiets down after sunset.

Services Offered

  • Campsites: Acadiana Park Campground offers 75 camping spots that accommodate both RVs and tents. Each site is equipped with water and electrical hookups (30 and 50 amp service available), providing essential conveniences for a comfortable stay. Two pull-through sites are also available, and most sites are shaded by large oak trees.

  • Restrooms and Showers: The campground provides basic yet clean shower rooms and restrooms with flush toilets. While some past reviews mentioned issues, recent efforts by the PARC Department (Parks, Arts, Recreation, & Culture) have included cleaning and repainting these facilities to meet higher standards of cleanliness.

  • Dump Station: A black water dump station is conveniently located near the campground entrance. Campers are reminded that black and grey water are not allowed to be dumped on the ground within the campsites.

  • Potable Water: All sites have access to potable water hookups, ensuring a reliable water supply for campers.

  • Picnic Tables and Fire Rings: Each campsite typically includes a picnic table and a fire ring with a grill, perfect for outdoor dining and campfires (fires are permitted in fire rings only, and campers are responsible for extinguishing them before leaving).

  • On-site Management: The park benefits from a friendly and helpful park manager, Jared, who is noted for his dedication to improving the park and assisting campers. While not always on-site, calling ahead can facilitate check-in.

  • Affordable Rates: The rental fee is $28.00 per pad per night, making it a very inexpensive option for both RV and tent camping. Payment is typically cash or check only, and often operates on an honor system for after-hours arrivals.

  • Pet-Friendly: Pets are welcome in the campground and on the nature trails, provided they are leashed at all times.

  • Maximum Stay Limit: To prevent residential camping, all campers are limited to a maximum stay of 10 days. After 10 consecutive days, a 30-day waiting period is required before returning.

Features / Highlights

  • Extensive Nature Trails & Boardwalk: A significant highlight is the direct access to Acadiana Park's extensive nature trails, including a captivating boardwalk that winds through a bayou environment, offering a "jungle-like vibe" and opportunities for wildlife viewing, including various bird species and potentially other fauna.

  • Acadiana Park Nature Station: The campground is adjacent to the Acadiana Park Nature Station, a 150-acre interpretive center and trail system. This facility offers environmental education programs and is home to a diverse ecosystem at the juncture of Gulf Coastal Tallgrass Prairie and the Mississippi River Floodplain.

  • Large Kids Playground: A "huge kids playground" provides ample entertainment for younger campers, making it an excellent choice for families.

  • Lots of Shade from Oak Trees: The presence of numerous large oak trees throughout the campground ensures plenty of shade, offering relief from the Louisiana sun, especially during warmer months.

  • Gated Entry & Security: The campground is gated, and a code is required for entry after hours, contributing to a sense of safety and security for campers. Security drives by periodically.

  • Acadiana Character & Culture: The park is infused with "Louisiana Acadian character," providing an authentic cultural experience alongside the natural beauty. It serves as a perfect launch point to explore the charming town of Lafayette and its vibrant culture.

  • Proximity to City Amenities: Despite its natural setting, the campground is "right in town," offering easy access to grocery stores, restaurants, gas stations, and other essential services within a short drive.

  • Disc Golf Course: The larger Acadiana Park boasts an extensive 36-hole disc golf course that winds through the park, offering another recreational activity for campers.

While generally highly praised, some minor issues noted include the potential for noisy neighbors in adjacent parts of the larger park on weekends, and some older reviews mentioning water with a "funny smell" or "weird taste," though more recent reviews praise good water pressure and no funny smells, suggesting improvements.
