Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains Introduce
For Colorado locals and visitors looking to experience the Rocky Mountains without sacrificing comfort or premium amenities, Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains in Granby sets the standard for a destination RV resort. Blurring the lines between a traditional campground, an RV park, and a full-service resort hotel, this location offers a unique, comprehensive vacation experience right in the heart of Grand County. It caters not only to those traveling in recreational vehicles but also to guests seeking luxury cabin stays, studio cabins, and unique glamping experiences like Airstreams or Conestoga Wagons.
The resort’s positioning is ideal for exploring some of the most spectacular landscapes the state of Colorado has to offer. Situated between Grand Lake and Winter Park/Fraser, guests have incredible access to Rocky Mountain National Park, Lake Granby, and world-class ski and bike areas. A major highlight noted by guests is the sheer volume of activities and top-tier amenities offered on-site, making the resort a destination in itself. One review enthusiastically stated, "Our stay at Sun Outdoors was fantastic. We had a studio cabin. It was extremely comfortable, very clean, well appointed. The grounds are fantastic. There are so many activities we didn't have time to do everything."
The quality of the accommodations, regardless of whether guests stay in a cabin or an RV site, is consistently well-rated, often described as very well-maintained and up-kept. The RV sites themselves are reportedly well-thought-out, offering full hookups (electric, water, sewer) and amenities like fire pits and picnic tables, ensuring a comfortable stay for all types of rigs. Furthermore, the commitment to being a family and pet-friendly location is evident, with dedicated spaces like a dog park available for furry friends. As one guest mentioned, their "senior dog with us and she loved the dog park."
However, like any popular Colorado resort, the high volume of guests, particularly during peak seasons and weekends, can stretch resources. A critical but factual observation from a past visitor pointed out a common challenge: the demand for shared facilities. The review noted, "Only issue we had was that there were not enough bathroom/showers. Almost always a line waiting for bathrooms to free up the whole time we were there." This is an important consideration for potential guests, indicating that while the facilities are nice, planning for their use during busy times is advisable. Despite this minor operational concern, the resort’s overall quality and comprehensive offerings solidify its reputation as a premier Colorado vacation destination.
Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains boasts a superb location for the Colorado adventurer. The address, 1051 Summit Trl, Granby, CO 80446, USA, places the resort along the headwaters of the Colorado River, nestled in a valley with breathtaking views of the surrounding Arapahoe National Forest. This highly desirable positioning grants visitors easy access to key Colorado attractions.
The location is perfectly situated to serve as a basecamp for exploring the vast recreational opportunities of Grand County:
- It is centrally located between the scenic beauty and historic charm of Grand Lake and the vibrant, year-round activities of Fraser and Winter Park, which are less than a 30-minute drive away.
- The resort is near Lake Granby, one of Colorado's largest bodies of water, which offers fishing and boating.
- Crucially, the resort provides excellent access to the western side of Rocky Mountain National Park, offering a less-crowded alternative for reaching iconic trails and wildlife viewing areas.
The resort grounds themselves are designed for accessibility and convenience. The property offers on-site parking and free parking lots for all guests. Furthermore, it explicitly provides an ADA-compliant environment with a wheelchair accessible entrance and a wheelchair accessible parking lot, ensuring that the facility can be enjoyed by all visitors and guests.
The resort operates with extensive onsite services, moving beyond a simple RV park model to that of a full recreational destination. Services are designed to maximize convenience and leisure for guests.
- Full RV Hookups: Every RV site is equipped with essential full hookups, including RV electric hookup (30/50 amp), RV sewer hookup, and RV water hookup.
- Diverse Lodging Options: Beyond RV camping, the resort offers varied lodging, including studio and multi-bedroom cabins, Airstream rentals, and unique glamping accommodations like Conestoga wagons, making it a viable option for non-RV owners.
- Onsite Dining and Retail: The resort includes onsite services such as a Bar & Grill and Tavern, minimizing the need to leave the property for meals. A convenience store or retail shop is also available for essential supplies.
- Recreational Rentals: Rentals for water activities, such as paddle boards and kayaks for use on the adjacent lake or river, are available to guests, though a previous guest noted the prices led them to purchase their own gear elsewhere.
- Accessibility Services: The property offers a wheelchair accessible entrance and parking lot, demonstrating a commitment to serving all guests.
- Payment Flexibility: The resort accepts multiple forms of payment for the camping fee and other charges, including credit cards and debit cards, for easy transactions.
The resort is defined by its extensive, family-friendly feature set, which elevates the stay from a mere campsite to a comprehensive vacation. The facilities are vast and impressive, supporting numerous on-site activities.
- Aquatic Center: Features multiple swimming pools and at least four large, well-maintained hot tubs, which are highly praised by guests as "great" for relaxing after a day of Colorado exploring.
- Multi-Sport Complex: Includes various sports courts for activities like pickleball, basketball, and often a gaga pit, catering to active families and individuals.
- Indoor Entertainment: A large community center features amenities such as an Arcade and a Mini Bowling Alley (Glacier Lanes), providing excellent options for rainy days or evening entertainment.
- Nature-Integrated Recreation: Direct access to an on-site lake for paddle boarding and a hill with dedicated hike/bike trails that offer a "great workout and views." The entire property is highly conductive to activities like hiking.
- Pet-Friendly Policy: Dogs are allowed, and the presence of a dedicated dog park ensures that pets can enjoy their vacation just as much as their owners.
- Dedicated Children's Area: A modern, on-site playground is available for younger children to safely enjoy.
- Free On-Site Parking: All guests benefit from complimentary and ample on-site parking throughout their stay.

For any Colorado resident or out-of-state visitor, Sun Outdoors Rocky Mountains is worth choosing because it represents a rare convergence of spectacular location and five-star resort amenities. It is not simply a place to park an RV; it is a full-fledged, meticulously maintained resort vacation in the Colorado Rockies.
The key feature that elevates it above a typical RV park is the vast array of built-in leisure and dining options. Having multiple hot tubs, pools, a fitness center, a bowling alley, and multiple dining venues right outside your RV or cabin door means guests spend less time driving and more time relaxing and enjoying their vacation. The sheer scope of activities ensures that every member of the family, from senior citizens to small children, will find something engaging, making it a perfect multi-generational vacation spot.
Furthermore, its geographic advantage—being perfectly situated between the recreational hubs of Grand Lake, Winter Park, and the wilderness of Rocky Mountain National Park—makes it an unbeatable home base for exploring Colorado's central mountains. Guests are assured a high standard of comfort, whether in a pristine cabin or a full-hookup RV site. The main consideration, as noted in reviews, is the need to navigate the high demand for shared facilities like showers during busy times. However, this is a minor operational issue compared to the enormous value delivered by the resort's premium amenities, prime location, and commitment to being a family and pet-friendly mountain getaway.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Awesome! We did not want to leave this site! Very well maintained and up-kept. Only issue we had was that there were not enough bathroom/showers. Almost always a line waiting for bathrooms to free up the whole time we were there. Pools were very nice, probably not big enough for the amount of people over the weekend we seen but plenty of deck space. The hot tubs were great, there are four of them. The lake is another great spot to relax, while the bugs are not out. We ended up buying a couple paddle boards downtown to use because the amount for the rentals was the same as the purchase. They have a hill with hike/bike trails that can be used for a great workout and views.
August 04 · Andrew Qucsai Jr.Our stay at Sun Outdoors was fantastic. We had a studio cabin. It was extremely comfortable, very clean, well appointed. The grounds are fantastic. We had our senior dog with us and she loved the dog park. There are so many activities we didn't have time to do everything. It's perfectly situated between Grand Lake and Fraser/Winter Park. We will definitely be back, hopefully for longer next time.
August 05 · Dave MedlockThis is one of the best campgrounds we've ever stayed at. The grounds are beautiful, super clean, and full of fun things to do. All the employees were kind, helpful, and really seemed to love working there. There were tons of families and kids riding bikes, scooters, and golf carts. It felt like summer the way it should be. Everyone was easy-going, friendly, and respectful. No complaints, no drama. Just a good old-fashioned, laid-back camping experience.Highly recommend if you're looking for a fun and relaxing getaway with the family.
July 20 · Suzanne HildoerWe have THOROUGHLY enjoyed our stay at Sun Outdoors. The staff, especially Mitch, were so welcoming. He immediately had our drink orders memorized, had great tips about what to do while we’re here, and is just a great person to cut up with at the end of a long day of hiking or while waiting for the rain to pass. It’s a resort feel, with every amenity you could expect. Dog parks, gym, activities, pool, hot tubs, propane fills, well stocked general store, bars and restaurants, an arcade, showers, and laundry facilities.I did laundry twice and didn’t have issues with the machines or needing to wait for other people. The dogs loved the small lake and trails, one of which takes you to the river. The food on property wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but got the job done when I didn’t feel like cooking or finding a meal off property. There’s a well-stocked City Market nearby for groceries, and you are missing out big time if you don’t visit Lark Coffee about 1.5 miles down 34.Being so close to RMNP is a real treat, but prepare to drive. Most of the good hikes are on the other side of the park, so we took the opportunity to stop for lunch and ice cream in Estes Park to make the most of it.You’re also 30 minutes away from Winter Park and 15 minutes from the Snow Mountain YMCA for good hiking if you miss out on timed entry passes to RMNP.We were even able to find a veterinarian to help with our dog that became during our stay over in Winter Park. All in all, we’d recommend this place and would gladly come back.
September 10 · Devon Leann WilsonBeautiful location and wonderful amenities. They have bike rentals on-site for your cruising needs. Their fitness center is quite nice: many strength machines, including cable machines, leg press/curl/extension, lat pull down, several treadmills, rowing machines, and some free weights. The site itself offers stunning vista and is near Winter Park and Fraser. We had a fantastic time and can't wait to return.
