Madison Arm Resort Introduce
For Montana residents seeking the quintessential Big Sky Country outdoor experience, the Madison Arm Resort offers a unique combination of RV park, campground, and full-service marina located directly on the shores of Hebgen Lake, just minutes from West Yellowstone. This resort is nestled deep within the Gallatin National Forest, providing a stunning, shady, and scenic environment that promises an intimate connection with Montana’s wilderness. Madison Arm Resort is an ideal basecamp for world-class trout fishing, water sports, and exploring the vast landscape of Yellowstone National Park.
Unlike many roadside RV parks, Madison Arm is an immersive destination. It caters to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts, from those bringing large recreational vehicles to campers preferring a rustic tent site, and even travelers needing cabin or cottage rentals. The resort’s dual function as a marina significantly enhances the experience, granting guests immediate access to the beautiful waters of Hebgen Lake, renowned for its incredible trout fishing. The integration of on-site services—including a general store, laundry facilities, and boat rentals—allows Montanans to settle in for an extended period without the constant need to drive back to town for supplies.
However, the journey to this secluded slice of paradise is a critical factor for all guests to consider. Public feedback consistently highlights the condition of the access road, Forest Service Road 291, which connects the resort to the main highway. Travelers should be prepared for a rough, unpaved road with severe washboards and rivets that requires caution and patience. The park management acknowledges this challenge, noting that the Forest Service is responsible for grading the road. While recent updates suggest the road conditions have been temporarily improved by grooming, prospective guests, particularly those pulling large RVs, should factor the difficulty of the 5-mile drive into their planning. Despite this hurdle, those who value a clean, lakefront setting surrounded by the Gallatin National Forest often find the destination worth the effort.
The resort’s physical location is both a major feature and a logistical consideration. It is approximately 8.5 miles northwest of the town of West Yellowstone, a key hub for entering Yellowstone National Park. The main approach involves driving a few miles north on US Highway 191/20, then turning onto the 5-mile, unpaved Forest Service Road 291. Guests should know that this dirt/gravel access road, while typically negotiable, can be extremely rough and heavily rutted, potentially adding a significant amount of travel time and stress to the journey. The resort recommends a speed of 25-30 mph for a smoother ride, but caution is necessary.
Once inside the resort, accessibility is well addressed, with several features dedicated to guest comfort and inclusion:
- There is a Wheelchair accessible entrance to key facilities.
- Dedicated Wheelchair accessible parking lots are available.
- The resort provides a Wheelchair accessible restroom.
- The resort is easily accessible by boat, featuring a boat ramp and docking facilities for a "Boat-In" option.

- **Shade and Scenery:** The campground is set in a **shady location** surrounded by tall pine and spruce trees within the Gallatin National Forest.

- **Direct Trail Access:** The well-connected Gallatin National Forest Trail Route 1731 runs through the campsite, open to motorized and non-motorized vehicles, perfect for hiking, biking, and motorsports.
- **Pet-Friendly Camping:** **Dogs are allowed** in campsites and resort rental RVs (with an extra fee), though pets are restricted from cabins/cottages and pontoon boat rentals.
- **Day Use Sites:** For Montanans who wish to enjoy the lake and amenities without an overnight stay, **Day Use Sites** are available for a fee.

However, the decision must be made with the understanding that the approach road (Forest Service Road 291) is a significant obstacle. Montanans accustomed to backcountry travel may find it manageable, but those with large, sensitive RVs or new trailers must proceed with extreme caution to prevent potential vehicle damage. Ultimately, the resort is chosen by those prioritizing the destination: a peaceful, amenity-rich, lakefront basecamp for water sports and exploring the world-class wilderness of the Gallatin National Forest and the Yellowstone ecosystem. The beautiful views and proximity to nature remain the biggest draws, making it a worthy, if challenging, destination for the prepared traveler.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Madison Arm Resort is located on Hebgen Lake. The resort is clean and in a beautiful shady location. The owner is honest and will do her best so you have a pleasurable experience However getting there is an adventure and you may tear your vehicle or RV to shreds. The dirt/gravel road is probably THE WORST road in the state of Montana. The forest service is supposedly responsible for grading the road. Whatever priority they put on that is another story. I guess they're waiting for enough complaints before they act. If this same road was located in Big Sky you can bet the road would be nice and groomed !Update 9/1/2035Just before the Labor Day weekend, either the Resort or the Forestry Service (unlikely) groomed the road to the resort. It is much safer to drive your RV to the Resort now. It would have been nice if this was done in early July instead of the end of the season !
September 02 · NezdrakeThe lake was nice; the showers and restroom was clean. Unfortunately one of the washing machines wasn’t working and there really isn’t any space to fold laundry…There was a table, but it was full of supplies and we didn’t want to put clean laundry on it. The road to get into the campsite is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!! The rivets in the road are so bad it shakes the car and trailer all over the road. Took about 30 minutes to drive 4 miles. When we finally did arrive the guy was very nonchalant and just said, “yeah, it’s better off if you go faster”. On one of the trips back in to the campsite, the truck’s side mirror was broken. Initially the guy wanted to put us in a “pull through” site, that was actually a back in, and we would’ve been on the middle of the road… When we get home I know we’ll absolutely need a wheel alignment and we’re hoping for no further damage! While the lake is nice and the campground too, we would definitely NOT recommend to anyone and we’ll definitely NOT be back. Montana’s full of beautiful lakes and campsites…if the service road were grated, it would’ve made all the difference. I would think they would invest in the machinery to make this place more accessible without causing damage to your vehicles!!! Very disappointed!!
June 26 · Roxanne FrazierThis place is amazing. So peaceful. The front desk was so nice on check in and whenever we needed something. Bathrooms were clean and the showers were awesome. We were right by the lake. So beautiful. The road can be a little rough but just call and see which way to take and go about 25-30 mph on it and it’s not to bad. It definitely worth it.
August 09 · Kiaha PearsonWe stayed at Madison Arm Resort for 3 days while visiting Yellowstone. The camping site is a hidden gem in the middle of the forest by a beautiful lake. We woke up each day looking at the lake. It was quiet and perfect place for us. The showers and bathrooms were clean and well maintained. The staff were very nice. This place is close to the West entrance to Yellowstone Park. I recommend it for those who want to avoid crowded noisy campgrounds and be close to nature.
August 20 · Agnes WacDO. NOT. GO!!!This RV ‘Resort’ is a hoax. The “best” road is 5.5 miles of the worst rutted/washboard dirt & gravel road I’ve ever been on. (Longer, main road adds potholes!!!). There is NO “good” speed. Tried 5-6 mph in and 10 - 15 mph out much lower than thier recommended 20-25 mph, which would have been flat out dangerous with 2-way traffic coming around blind corners!Strongly object to fantasy description of “resort”. Only 30 amp service. Forget recreation or a pool - Water from taps is light brown (!). Site F9 was very hard to back into with just a 27’ trailer. Can’t sit on wood deck at sunset - too many mosquitoes (which are VERY prevalent in the only open bathroom on-site. (One the two stalls, you have to be a double amputee to use on of them!)They ARE only 9 miles from the west gate - but those 5.5 dirt miles were HARD! We did back to the lake - but found out swimming wasn’t allowed. It was quiet- except for the two dogs next door that howled non-stop if their owners left. Excellent AT&T and Verizon reception- but WAY TOO Expensive for what you get and the unavoidable damage to your coach!STRONGLY DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!
