Chaumont River RV Park & Campground is ideally situated at 28653 County Road 179, Chaumont, NY 13622, USA. This address places the park in the quaint village of Chaumont, a hidden gem within Jefferson County, New York. Its strategic location offers campers a perfect blend of serene natural surroundings and convenient access to local attractions and regional hubs.
The park's most significant geographical advantage is its direct adjacency to the beautiful Chaumont River, and its close proximity – just "one mile from Lake Ontario." This allows for incredible water-based activities right from the campground, including fishing directly from the docks and easy boat access to the expansive waters of Lake Ontario. For those who enjoy exploring by water, this is a prime spot in one of the best fishing areas of the Northeast and the wider Thousand Islands region.
Chaumont village itself, though small, provides essential amenities such as an IGA grocery store, several restaurants, gas stations, a Dollar Store, and a hardware store where propane can be acquired, all within about a mile's distance. This means campers don't have to venture far for supplies or a bite to eat.
Furthermore, the campground's location provides excellent accessibility to some of the most popular destinations in the Thousand Islands. It's approximately "12 miles from Clayton," a vibrant tourist town known for its Antique Boat Museum and various river events. Other charming towns like Cape Vincent and Alexandria Bay, both offering unique attractions and historical sites, are also within a reasonable driving distance (Cape Vincent is about 8 miles, and Alexandria Bay is about 22 miles). For those looking for broader city amenities, Watertown, NY, is also accessible. This prime location allows visitors to easily explore the diverse offerings of the Thousand Islands, from scenic boat tours to historical landmarks and charming waterfront communities.
Chaumont River RV Park & Campground provides a comprehensive range of services and site types designed to cater to various camping preferences, ensuring a comfortable stay for all its guests. These offerings typically include:
- RV Sites: The park offers a variety of RV sites, including both "Seasonal & Short-Term" options, as well as "Back-In & Pull-Through Sites." These sites are equipped with "30 & 50 Amp" electrical hookups, "Water & Sewer Hookup," and can accommodate "Vehicles Up to 50 Feet." Each RV site generally comes with a fire ring and a picnic table.
- Tent Sites: For traditional campers, "Tent Sites Available" are provided, complete with a picnic table and fire pit ring.
- Cabin Rentals: The park features "3 New Waterfront & Rustic Log Cabins Available for Rental Bookings," which include electricity, a refrigerator, fire pit ring, picnic table, deck, and chairs. (Note: Cabins generally do not include linens/towels/bedding, and some may have pet fees or not allow pets, unlike RV/tent sites).
- Full Hook-Ups: Most RV sites offer full hook-ups, including water, sewer, and electricity, providing maximum convenience for RVers.
- Bathrooms and Showers: Clean restroom and shower facilities are available to guests, described as being open 24/7. (Some reviews mention minimal hot water or unheated bathrooms in showers, which is a point for consideration).
- Dump Station: A dedicated dump station is available for RVers.
- Pet-Friendly Environment: The park is explicitly "Family and dog friendly," and allows "Maximum 2 dogs per site," with aggressive dogs not permitted. All pets must be kept on a leash at all times. (Some reviews indicate issues with barking dogs or rules not being followed by some pet owners).
- Docks for Boats: A significant service for boating enthusiasts, the park provides "Docks available for your boat," allowing guests to explore Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands directly from the campground.
- Kayak Rentals: Guests can rent kayaks to paddle along the scenic Chaumont River, offering a direct recreational activity on site.
- Firewood Purchase: Firewood is available for purchase at the front office, making it convenient for guests to enjoy campfires.
- Garbage and Recycling: The park is a "green park" with bins for garbage and recycling (bottles and cans), with money from collected bottles donated to a local charity.
- Manager Presence: Management (Carl and Paula are mentioned as friendly and always around) aims to be "on top of everything," providing a direct point of contact for guests. (However, some reviews contradict this, highlighting issues with rule enforcement for some campers).
Chaumont River RV Park & Campground offers several features and highlights that make it an attractive destination for New York campers and RV enthusiasts. These aspects contribute to its appeal and the overall guest experience:
- Waterfront & Water View Sites: A major highlight is the availability of "Waterfront or water view lots," providing stunning scenic backdrops and direct access to the Chaumont River and views of Lake Ontario.
- Excellent Fishing Opportunities: The park boasts of being in "one of the best fishing areas of the Northeast/Thousand Islands," with guests able to "Fish off our docks," making it ideal for anglers.
- Family and Pet-Friendly: The welcoming atmosphere for both families and pets (with a specific maximum of 2 dogs per site, on leash, and no aggressive breeds) ensures that all family members can enjoy the camping experience.
- Diverse Accommodation Options: Beyond RV sites, the availability of "Tent Sites" and "3 New Waterfront & Rustic Log Cabins" provides flexibility for different types of campers, including those seeking a more glamping-style experience.
- Proximity to Thousand Islands Attractions: Located near Clayton and other key Thousand Islands towns, the park serves as an excellent base for exploring the region's famous attractions, boat tours, and events.
- On-Site Water Activities: With docks for boats and kayak rentals available, guests have direct access to water recreation, encouraging exploration of the Chaumont River and Lake Ontario.
- Quiet and Relaxing Environment (Generally): While some reviews mention disturbances, the park aims for a "quiet time" from 10:00 PM - 8:00 AM, and its setting "nestled in the woods" contributes to a peaceful atmosphere for many guests.
- ADA Accessible Sites: The availability of ADA accessible RV sites demonstrates a commitment to accommodating all guests.
- Responsive Management (Mixed Reviews): Some reviews praise the managers, Carl and Paula, as "friendly, on top of everything and always around," contributing to a well-kept park. (However, other reviews present a contrasting view regarding rule enforcement and management's handling of certain issues).
It is important to acknowledge the contrasting customer reviews. While some praise the management and the peaceful nature of the park, others express significant concerns about loud neighbors, violations of park rules (e.g., number of people/items at a site, dog barking, property upkeep), and a perceived lack of consistent rule enforcement, with allegations of favoritism. The very serious claim about "pedos living there in 2022" is also a deeply disturbing concern that prospective visitors would need to address and verify with park management directly, as the safety and security of a campground are paramount.
Chaumont River RV Park & Campground, like most recreational campgrounds, primarily offers its sites and amenities at standard nightly, weekly, or seasonal rates. There is no publicly advertised information detailing specific "promotions" or "special offers" such as first-time visitor discounts, long-term stay specials beyond standard seasonal rates, or off-peak incentives. The park's website and listing services typically display their standard pricing for RV sites (30-amp, 50-amp, back-in, pull-through), tent sites, and cabin rentals, which vary by duration (short-term vs. seasonal).
Prospective campers are encouraged to visit the park's official website (if available and easily found, as some sources mention a website) or contact them directly via phone to inquire about current rates, seasonal availability, and any potential deals that might not be widely advertised. Given the competitive nature of the RV park industry in the popular Thousand Islands region of New York, it's always a good practice to ask if any special packages or discounts are available for extended stays or during specific times of the year.
For inquiries related to Chaumont River RV Park & Campground, including reservations, current rates, specific park rules, or to discuss any concerns, you can use the following contact details:

Given the mixed reviews regarding park management and rule enforcement, it is highly recommended that prospective campers, especially those considering a seasonal or long-term stay, engage in direct and thorough communication with the park managers. Clarifying all policies, particularly those concerning noise, pet behavior, site maintenance, and visitor rules, before booking a site can help ensure a more enjoyable stay.
Chaumont River RV Park & Campground offers a compelling and potentially ideal destination for New York locals seeking a scenic and amenity-rich outdoor experience in the Thousand Islands region. Its location on the Chaumont River, just a short distance from Lake Ontario, provides unparalleled opportunities for fishing, boating, and enjoying the serene beauty of the Northern New York waterfront. For those who own an RV, love tent camping, or prefer the rustic comfort of a cabin, the diverse accommodation options cater to a wide range of preferences.
The park's family and pet-friendly policies, coupled with amenities like a playground, showers, and dedicated boat/RV storage, enhance the convenience and enjoyment for all guests. Its proximity to charming towns like Clayton, Cape Vincent, and Alexandria Bay means campers have easy access to local culture, dining, and additional recreational activities, making it an excellent base for exploring the wider region. For New Yorkers who are passionate about outdoor adventures, fishing, and boating, this park's features align perfectly with those interests.
However, it is crucial for prospective visitors to be aware of the mixed reviews regarding park rule enforcement and the consistency of management's oversight. While some praise the managers, others highlight issues with loud campers, unkempt sites, and a perceived lack of fairness in applying rules. Given the very serious nature of some of these concerns, especially regarding safety, direct communication with the park to address specific questions and verify current policies is strongly advised before booking a stay, particularly for long-term or seasonal sites. For New York locals who value a prime waterfront location and a variety of camping options, and who are willing to engage proactively with park management to ensure their expectations are met, Chaumont River RV Park & Campground has the potential to be a wonderful retreat for memorable outdoor adventures.

Chaumont River RV Park &Campground Reviews
Was a nice place until they let the rowdies with the big truck. 6 kids, and old campers there. Like to rev their old dodge by the bathrooms, disturbing other at all hours. Supposed to only have so many people at the site but they have tons of famous and crap outside. Barking dogs because no one cares. One guy was tearing apart his camper and throwing cabinets out onto the lawn of his camp. People get away with things against the rules because they are friendly with the managers. Had pedos living there in 2022. It can be a nice park but managers don’t care sometimes.
Jun 15, 2025 · Loretta HowardWe have our trailer here on a permanent site. The park is well kept, the managers Carl and Paula are friendly, on top of everything and always around. Only 12 miles from Clayton and all the events on the river. I have been in other parks but this is by far the best.
Sep 30, 2024 · Rosemary SpitzerService was exceptional!! We are traveling with 2 other DRV Mobile Suites and have made all our reservations to accommodate our large rigs. We had reservations at another local campground for a couple of days. When we arrived at this other place they were full and had “lost” our reservation even though they had cashed our checks. We called Marla at Chaumont River RV and she went out of her way to accommodate all 3 of us which isn’t always easy. Marla graciously met us at the campground and walked the open spots to ensure that we would fit! She went above and beyond our expectations and we are so grateful. If you are in the area do give Marla a call and stay!!
Jul 25, 2023 · Carolyn KahlerOwners are friendly and wonderful little RV park right on the river. Can’t wait until next season and we get to enjoy the spot overlooking the river. They have been more than kind and accommodating. Very quiet and peaceful and rates are reasonable.
Aug 25, 2022 · Alisa PattersonThe park is tucked inside a wooded area that's right next to the water so it was great to have a nice, quiet view. The RV was very comfortable and appeared to be relatively new. My friend and I were able to have nightly fires, toast some marshmallows, and drink a couple of beers. The location was good and not too far from some of the places we wanted to visit.
