Cape Camping & RV Park

1900 N Kingshighway St, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701, USA

4.0
The campground itself was ok for the one night stay we needed while traveling through. The office was closed so we never met anyone. My only complaint was the boneheaded guys who were mowing during the evening while we were there. First of all who mows a campground in the evening? That would be bad enough but they were running around on their zero turn mowers blowing the grass all over the campsites and our motorhome. Why wouldn’t they mow away from the campers? I had grass all over the side of my motorhome and was scared to death that the rocks flying were chipping our paint. My sewer hose was crushed and it wasn’t even out in the grass so I assume one of the chowderheads with the weed eaters stepped on it. There were 4-5 of them running back and forth mowing and not one of them seemed to have any respect for the campers or their property. - William S

There is also a casino nearby for entertainment.

Cape Camping & RV Park offers a range of services designed to provide a comfortable and convenient stay for RVers, although some services may have limitations or receive mixed reviews.

  • RV Sites with Full Hookups: The park features 90 pull-thru sites, each measuring approximately 75x24 feet. These sites are equipped with full hookups, including 50/30/20 amp electricity, water, and sewer connections. This is a fundamental service for RV travelers, ensuring their vehicle's systems can operate fully.

  • Free WiFi & Basic Cable TV: Complimentary wireless internet is available at all sites, and basic cable channels are also provided. While the Wi-Fi bandwidth has been noted by some as low, making streaming difficult, it serves basic internet needs. Cable TV offers entertainment options.

  • Laundromat: A climate-controlled laundry room is available on-site, described as clean with well-functioning machines. This is an essential service for extended stays.

  • Bath Houses: The park features two bathhouses, which are noted as being handicap friendly and also serve as tornado shelters. Reviews on their condition are mixed, with some describing them as clean but older, and others citing issues with maintenance and cleanliness (loose toilets, wet/dirty floors, taped windows).

  • On-Site Store and Supplies: The office typically functions as a store offering ice, soda, snacks, firewood, select camping supplies, video games, movie rentals, and a pool table. This provides convenience for immediate needs.

  • LP Tank Refills: Propane services are available, which is a key convenience for RVers.

  • Dump Station with Air and Water: A dump station is provided for waste disposal, along with air and water services.

  • Rates and Discounts: The park offers various rates including nightly ($60.00), weekly ($350.00), and monthly ($650.00). Discounts are available for Good Sam members, military personnel, and seniors, priced at $54.00 per night. A $100 refundable deposit is required for certain stays.

  • After-Hours Support: An after-hours phone number (573-803-9343) is provided for urgent issues when the office is closed.

However, it is crucial to note that customer reviews indicate inconsistent availability of services and upkeep, with reports of the office being frequently closed (especially on Sundays and Mondays, and only 10 am-4 pm on other days), and amenities like the pool or mini-golf being closed during the off-season. There are also significant complaints about disruptive mowing practices and poor maintenance of sites and some facilities.

Cape Camping & RV Park offers a mix of features and highlights that cater to RV travelers, although some aspects have received critical feedback, which is important for prospective visitors to consider.

  • Pull-Through Sites: A significant highlight for RVers is the prevalence of pull-through sites. These are convenient for larger rigs, allowing campers to easily pull in and out without needing to back up, simplifying arrival and departure.

  • Full Utility Hookups: The provision of full hookups (50/30/20 amp electricity, water, and sewer) at each site is a core feature that ensures a comfortable and self-sufficient stay for RVers.

  • On-Site Amenities (Seasonal): The park advertises a swimming pool (seasonal), miniature golf (small fee), a playground, a walking trail, and a 2-acre fishing pond (catch and release). These amenities can enhance the recreational experience, especially for families, when they are open and well-maintained.

  • Pet-Friendly: The park is pet-friendly, offering a designated area for pets. This is a crucial feature for many RV travelers who bring their furry companions along.

  • Proximity to Local Attractions: The park's location provides easy access to Cape Girardeau's attractions, including museums, historic sites, shopping centers, and a casino. It is also close to Southeast Missouri State University. Restaurants within walking distance are also a plus.

  • Laundromat and Dump Station: The presence of a climate-controlled laundry room and a dump station with air and water are practical features that contribute to the convenience of long-term stays.

However, customer reviews highlight several significant areas of concern that act as "lowlights" or significant drawbacks:

  • Maintenance Issues: Multiple reviews describe "nasty yards," "trash laying everywhere," and generally "ran down" conditions. Specifically, bathrooms were reported to be in "terrible shape" with loose toilets and dirty floors. Sites were described as "worn, uneven, bare of the gravel that is supposed to be there" and prone to flooding. Fire rings were often not cleaned.

  • Disruptive Mowing Practices: A major complaint involves "boneheaded guys who were mowing during the evening" and "blowing the grass all over the campsites and our motorhome," with concerns about "rocks flying" and damage to property like a "crushed sewer hose." This indicates a lack of respect for guests' property and a disruptive maintenance schedule.

  • Office Accessibility: The office and store are reported to be "closed on Sunday and Monday" and only open "maybe 3 days per week and then only 10-4 or so," making it difficult for guests to check in, resolve issues, or access supplies.

  • Overpriced for Condition: Several reviewers felt the $60 nightly rate was "way over priced" given the conditions and lack of accessible amenities, especially during the off-season when the pool and mini-golf were closed.

  • Poor Wi-Fi Performance: While advertised as free Wi-Fi, one review noted "the band width is so low that it will take one to two hours to stream a thirty minute television program."

For those considering a stay at Cape Camping & RV Park, whether for a brief stopover or a longer visit in Missouri, here is the essential contact information:

Given the mixed nature of the reviews, particularly concerning office hours and maintenance, it is highly recommended that prospective visitors call ahead to confirm availability, current rates, and the operational status of all desired amenities (such as the pool or mini-golf, especially if traveling during the off-season). Inquiring about current policies regarding site maintenance and property care would also be prudent. If possible, a brief in-person visit to assess the condition of the facilities and sites firsthand is strongly advised before making a reservation, particularly for extended stays.

When evaluating why Cape Camping & RV Park might be suitable for locals in Missouri, it's essential to consider both its advertised features and the feedback provided by previous guests. While the park has notable advantages, particularly concerning its location, the significant concerns raised in reviews indicate that its suitability hinges on individual expectations and the potential for improvements in management and maintenance.

From a purely logistical standpoint, Cape Camping & RV Park offers undeniable convenience for Missouri residents. Its location directly off I-55 and on a major street in Cape Girardeau makes it an exceptionally easy stop for RV travelers passing through the state. For locals in Southeast Missouri, it provides a very accessible base for exploring Cape Girardeau's vibrant city life, including its historic downtown, riverfront, and university attractions. The proximity to multiple dining options and basic services within walking distance is a clear benefit, allowing for easy access to necessities without having to unhook an RV. The provision of full pull-through hookup sites is also a major plus for RVers, simplifying setup and departure, which is particularly appealing for short, overnight stays.

However, the suitability for locals, especially for more than an overnight stay, becomes more nuanced when considering the recurring negative feedback. The consistent complaints about poor bathroom conditions, unkempt sites, and disrespectful maintenance practices (e.g., mowing incidents) suggest that the park's current upkeep may not meet the expectations of many Missourians seeking a comfortable and well-maintained camping experience. The perceived "overpriced" nightly rate relative to these conditions could deter locals looking for good value, especially if they are considering longer visits or frequent stays.

Furthermore, the reported issues with office accessibility (closed on Sundays and Mondays, limited hours on other days) could be a significant inconvenience for locals attempting to check in, resolve issues, or access on-site supplies. Responsive management is a key factor in a positive RV park experience, and the reviews indicate this might be an area of concern at times.

Despite these criticisms, for a specific type of local user, Cape Camping & RV Park might still be suitable. If you are an RVer in Missouri who primarily needs a quick, accessible overnight stop with full hookups and are less concerned about cosmetic imperfections or active on-site amenities during your brief stay, the park's convenient location makes it a practical choice. Similarly, if the park undergoes significant improvements in management responsiveness and site maintenance, its inherent locational advantages could make it a much more attractive option for a wider range of Missouri locals seeking a reliable RV park in the Cape Girardeau area.

In conclusion, while Cape Camping & RV Park offers the fundamental services of an RV park in a highly convenient Missouri location, prospective local users should set their expectations based on the mixed public feedback. It is most suitable as a very practical stop for short, functional stays, leveraging its excellent accessibility. For longer visits or those prioritizing pristine conditions and consistent amenity availability, direct inquiry and a pre-visit assessment would be essential to ensure it aligns with individual preferences for a Missouri RV experience.
