Zilpo H Loop Introduce
For Kentuckians seeking a true escape into the heart of nature, the Daniel Boone National Forest offers unparalleled beauty and tranquility. Nestled within this expansive forest, along the shores of the breathtaking Cave Run Lake, lies Zilpo Campground – a cherished destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Among its various offerings, Zilpo H Loop stands out as an excellent choice for those who desire the convenience of electricity while immersing themselves in Kentucky's stunning natural landscapes. This specific loop provides a unique blend of rugged outdoor adventure and comfortable amenities, making it a highly desirable spot for locals looking to unplug and recharge.
Zilpo H Loop is particularly appealing for campers who require electrical hookups for their RVs, to power small appliances, or simply to keep their devices charged during their stay. The "Electric Only" designation means you can enjoy the comforts of home while still being surrounded by the forest's serenity. As a part of the larger Zilpo Campground, visitors to Zilpo H Loop benefit from the extensive facilities and wide range of recreational activities available throughout the Zilpo Recreation Area. It’s a place where the grandeur of Cave Run Lake meets the convenience of modern camping, creating an ideal setting for families, friends, and solo adventurers from across the Bluegrass State.
Zilpo H Loop is situated at Heron Rd Y, Salt Lick, KY 40371, USA. This address places it deep within the scenic Daniel Boone National Forest, on a peninsula extending into Cave Run Lake. While it offers a remote and peaceful atmosphere, it remains accessible for Kentucky residents. From major cities like Lexington or Louisville, the drive to Salt Lick typically involves navigating well-maintained state and U.S. routes. The journey, though "off the beaten path," is part of the charm, leading you through picturesque Kentucky scenery.
The campground’s remote nature means that visitors should plan to bring all necessary supplies, as nearby stores are limited. As one local visitor noted, "It's an hour to get any supplies." However, the journey is well worth it for the sense of seclusion and natural beauty. Roads leading into Zilpo Campground, including those to H Loop, are generally paved, making navigation for RVs and trailers manageable. While some sections might experience potholes as mentioned in reviews, the overall accessibility to the sites is good. Despite its remote feel, surprisingly, cell service is available in the H Loop due to a nearby tower, a welcome convenience for staying connected or for emergencies.
Zilpo H Loop, as an "Electric Only" section of Zilpo Campground, provides specific amenities tailored to this designation, while also offering access to the broader services of the main campground. Based on collective information and user reviews, campers at Zilpo H Loop can expect the following services:
- Electric Hookups: Each site in H Loop provides electrical hookups, typically offering 30 or 50 amp service, allowing campers to power their RVs, lights, and personal devices.
- Spacious & Level Sites: Campsites are generally large, with asphalt drives and compacted pea gravel railroad tie areas, making them "extremely level" and accommodating for various setups, including large RVs. Many sites offer two picnic tables.
- Potable Water Access: Drinking water spigots are centrally located within the loops, easily accessible for filling tanks or containers.
- Restrooms and Shower Houses: Flush toilets and hot showers are available in shared bathhouses throughout the campground. While user reviews mention some cleanliness issues (spiders, peeling paint, lint) and inconsistent lighting during the day, the availability of hot water is a definite plus.

- Lantern/Garbage Posts: Sites also provide metal posts with hooks for hanging laundry lines, lanterns, or garbage bags, adding to the convenience.

The true highlights of camping at Zilpo H Loop extend beyond the campsite itself, encompassing the vast recreational opportunities presented by its location within the Daniel Boone National Forest and on the shores of Cave Run Lake:
- Cave Run Lake Access: The campground offers direct access to Cave Run Lake, renowned for its size and beauty. It's excellent for kayaking, boating (with a concrete boat ramp available for camper use only), and fishing, with anglers often targeting muskie, large and smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. While fishing can be "peaceful," catching might be a challenge!
- Scenic Lake Views: Many sites, especially those "with great views of the lake," offer picturesque surroundings, contributing to a peaceful and enjoyable stay.
- Wildlife Abundance: The area is rich with wild animals, including raccoons, bears, and wild turkeys. This provides fantastic wildlife viewing opportunities but also necessitates strict food storage practices.
- Quiet and Remote Setting: The campground is described as "super quiet" and "very remote," ideal for those seeking a tranquil escape from urban noise and crowds.
- Hiking Opportunities: While some trails directly around the campground might be overgrown, Zilpo offers access to a network of trails around Cave Run Lake, including the 2.25-mile Zilpo Mountain Loop Trail, which connects to other trails for extended hiking or mountain biking adventures.
- Sandy Beach Area: Zilpo Recreation Area boasts a sandy beach with a roped swimming area, perfect for cooling off on warm Kentucky days, though pets are not permitted on the beach.
- Tater Knob Fire Tower: A nearby attraction, this fire tower is open to the public and offers outstanding panoramic views of the surrounding Daniel Boone National Forest and Cave Run Lake.

Zilpo H Loop Reviews
Well kept sites with great views of the lake. Definitely off the beaten path and peaceful. The shower houses on the other hand are full of spiders and other creatures which I normally don’t mind but they were literally everywhere so we didn’t use them. Trails were pretty overgrown. The camp host friendly and knowledgeable of the area. Pets are not permitted on the beach or in buildings. The store at the beach area was not open nor did it look set up to future business. Do not use styrofoam coolers as we witnessed a raccoon destroying one at of our neighboring sites. Overall, I would still return and recommend.
May 14, 2023 · AshleyHuge camp sites. Two picnic tables on most sites. Asphalt drive for site and then compacted pea gravel railroad tie areas for the rest of the campsite. They also provide metal posts with hooks to hang laundry line, lanterns or garbage. Extremely level sites. Lots of wild animals, racoons, bears and wild turkeys. Found a raccoon under our truck. Secure all food and supplies safely inside car or RV. You can not leave anything out at all. We came in May; only one other person camping.Bathrooms are institutional. Paint on floor peeling. Gross lint covering shower drain. However, the shower water was hot! Lights in the bathroom do not turn on during the day. There is no way to turn them on either. Thank God for the skylights!Cave Run Lake is amazing! We kayaked today. It's huge! We saw lots of fishing but no catching. Fisherman all said how peaceful it is. Totally agree! No laundry service. Had to drive an hour to Morehead, KY to find a laundromat, which was superfast, efficient with many machines to be done quickly!Super quiet campground. Very remote. Bring all the food, drinks and items you will need with you. None of the stores are open at the campground and it looks like they will not be opening any time soon. It's an hour to get any supplies. Thankfully, they answer the phone when you call the number on the map. Danny our camp host was super friendly and helpful. Told us of the impending tornado and to seek shelter in the shower stall. Thankfully, it was just a rain storm.Surprisingly, cell service is available. Up here in the mountains we did not expect to have any connection. There is a cell tower on the way out to H loop! Hallelujah!
May 18, 2023 · Maria Hidalgo DolanWe've stayed at Zilpo two times this summer. The first time was in F loop and this time in H Loop. H is the favorite so far because it has the best views. We love it here and are sure to come back every year.
Aug 06, 2023 · Shana BodnerWonderful primitive camp ground. Large and private sites. Many with direct access to the water. Nice beach, bath houses were clean, and all around very nice. It is pretty remote, so bring anything you need!
Jul 06, 2023 · Ronda ShultzmanCampsites are gorgeous. Each feels far apart with woods between.
