YMCA Camp Sherwin - Girard Introduce
Pennsylvania, with its rolling hills, vast forests, and proximity to the Great Lakes, offers countless opportunities for outdoor adventures. For those of us living in the Keystone State, finding a family-friendly spot to unwind and reconnect with nature is always a priority. YMCA Camp Sherwin – Girard, located in Lake City, presents itself as an option for campers seeking a variety of accommodations and activities. However, as local users, it's important to approach this campground with a clear understanding of what a stay here truly entails, particularly concerning amenity access during peak times.
YMCA Camp Sherwin, encompassing 70 acres along the banks of Lake Erie, has a long history, serving the region as a destination for family and youth recreation and outdoor exploration since 1912. It offers a mix of RV, tent, and cabin sites, alongside a swimming pool, a "Spray & Play Park," a catch-and-release fishing pond, and playing fields. While the natural setting and the potential for a wide range of activities are appealing, recent customer reviews highlight some significant considerations for local families planning a visit. Understanding these nuances from a local perspective can help manage expectations and ensure a more satisfying experience.
As one recent family noted, their "seven day family vacation with some friends" had both ups and downs. While the "cabin was pretty clean and the AC was cold," and the "staff is friendly and the sunset lake view is beautiful," a key point of contention was the limited access to amenities during weekdays. "We paid good money for our children to stand around in the hot sun all day watching those children enjoy the amenities," lamented a camper, referring to the busloads of local children attending YMCA day camp who have exclusive access to facilities like the pool, splash pad, bounce pad, basketball court, and playgrounds until 3 PM. This is a critical piece of information for any Pennsylvania family considering a stay, especially during the summer months.
YMCA Camp Sherwin - Girard is located at 8600 W Lake Rd, Lake City, PA 16423, USA. This prime location places it right on the shores of Lake Erie, between Elk Creek and Walnut Creek, and just minutes from Godfrey Run and Trout Run. For residents of Western Pennsylvania, especially those in the Erie area, the campground is highly accessible, offering a convenient drive to a natural escape.
Its position on West Lake Road means direct and easy access from major routes, making travel uncomplicated for both RVs and cars. Lake City itself is a small borough that provides local services and a quaint atmosphere. The campground's proximity to Lake Erie is a significant draw, offering stunning lake views and opportunities for fishing. While the beach access involves "103 steep stairs down a hillside," the natural beauty and the lake's presence are undeniable highlights. This accessibility to the lake and local creeks also makes it an attractive spot for anglers and those who enjoy water-based activities.
YMCA Camp Sherwin aims to provide a comprehensive camping experience with various accommodation types and amenities, though access to some amenities for campers is limited during weekday daytime hours due to YMCA day camp use.
- Diverse Accommodation Options: The campground offers a variety of choices including RV sites, tent sites, and cabins.
- RV/Tent Sites: Water and electric hook-ups are available for RVs and tents, with full hook-up sites also offered. All sites include a picnic table and a fire ring for traditional camping enjoyment.
- Cabins: Modern and rustic cabins are available, accommodating groups from 4 to 14 people. Each cabin is unique, and some (seven in total) include full facilities such as toilets, showers, and mini-kitchens. Others may have kitchenettes (refrigerator, microwave, electric burner, coffee maker) but no in-cabin bathrooms, requiring use of bathhouses. Linens, pillows, towels, and cooking utensils are generally not provided in cabins, so guests should plan to bring their own.
- Recreational Amenities (with access limitations):
- Lifeguarded Swimming Pool
- Spray & Play Park (Splash Pad)
- Air Jump Pillow / Bounce Pad
- Playgrounds
- Basketball Courts
- Catch-and-Release Fishing Pond: Accessible to campers throughout the day.
- Natural Beach Access: Via a steep staircase (103 steps) from the bluff.
Important Note on Amenity Access: During weekdays in the summer season, the pool, splash pad, bounce pad, basketball courts, and playgrounds are primarily used by YMCA day campers and are generally only accessible to paying overnight campers or cabin renters after 3 PM. Staff availability for supervision (e.g., for the bounce pad) can also affect access.
- Event Facilities: Halls and pavilions are available for rent, suitable for wedding receptions, family reunions, graduation parties, church picnics, company picnics, and other events.
- Security Access Gate: A security access gate with a unique PIN# for entry and exit has been installed for guests and childcare children's safety.
Despite the challenges noted by some recent campers regarding amenity access, YMCA Camp Sherwin does offer several appealing features that can make for an enjoyable outdoor experience for Pennsylvania locals.
- Picturesque Lake Erie Setting: The campground boasts "beautiful" sunset lake views and is located directly on the banks of Lake Erie, providing a stunning natural backdrop for your stay.
- Productive Fishing Pond: The "nicely stocked pond" offers year-round catch-and-release fishing opportunities, a popular activity for all ages that is accessible throughout the day for campers.
- Diverse Outdoor Spaces: Encompassing 70 acres, the property features playing fields and towering trees, offering ample space for outdoor activities and a sense of being immersed in nature.
- Variety of Lodging: With options for RVs, tents, and various cabins, the campground caters to different comfort levels and group sizes, making it versatile for different family or group dynamics.
- Friendly Staff: Many reviews acknowledge the "friendly staff," contributing positively to the overall atmosphere and guest experience.
- Proximity to Local Attractions: The campground is "pretty close to lots of other fun things to do" in the Erie area, including Presque Isle State Park, Waldameer Park, and other local sights, allowing campers to easily venture out and explore.
- Extended Season: Beyond the peak summer months, Camp Sherwin's extended camping season is ideal for hunters, fishermen, families, and groups looking for a quieter, off-peak experience.
As a YMCA facility, Camp Sherwin may offer various promotions, particularly outside of the peak summer day camp season or for extended stays. It is always recommended to check their official website or contact them directly for the most current and specific offers. Based on past promotions and general campground practices, you might find:
- Extended Stay Discounts: A common promotion is a discount for booking longer stays, such as a "stay 7 days while only paying for 5" offer, as seen in previous promotions. These typically have specific arrival days (e.g., Friday arrival) and may exclude holiday weekends.
- Off-Season Rates: Reduced pricing for bookings during the spring or fall, when the day camp is not in session and the campground might be quieter, offering more access to amenities for overnight guests.
- Group Rates: Special pricing for larger groups renting multiple sites or cabins, or for those utilizing the halls and pavilions for events.
- YMCA Member Discounts: While the facilities are open to the public without a YMCA membership (daily admission fee may apply for day use), members might receive preferential rates on overnight stays or certain programs.
Always verify promotions directly with YMCA Camp Sherwin to ensure applicability and availability for your desired dates.

YMCA Camp Sherwin - Girard Reviews
Extremely unhappy with my over priced in season (w/o amenities stay) in a FILTHY cabin. Have been camping at Camp Sherwin for over 13 years. It has really gone downhill. I had assumed that they hadn’t gotten around to cleaning for the season but their employee this morning promised she had cleaned it herself & also trained another employee who had also cleaned it. Do better YMCA, the dust & meds we had to take when our eyes swelled ruined our vacation. You sure charged me for it (including up charges that were not explained when my credit card was run but at check out) 😵
Jun 02, 2025 · Beth SimoniWe booked a seven day family vacation with some friends at YMCA Camp Sherwin. There were 14 adults and 4 children, ages 2-7. 3 RV’s and a rented pond cabin. (FYI the cabins have no cooking utensils, no trash bags, no pots or pans, no stove, no oven, just one electric hot plate,a microwave and fridge/freezer. Also most RV hook ups do not have septic.) We were very disappointed to learn that all the amenities such as the pool, splash pad, bounce pad, basketball court and playgrounds are not accessible to the paying campers or cabin renters during the weekdays because bus loads of local children come for YMCA day camp and are the only ones allowed access to them. Now, the children aren’t the issue. They are in controlled groups and seem to be having loads of fun. We paid good money for our children to stand around in the hot sun all day watching those children enjoy the amenities. The amenities were accessible to us at 3 PM. Except for the bounce pad because there never seemed to be staff available to supervise it. The natural beach is nice but it’s 103 steep stairs down a hillside. There is a nicely stocked pond that we were allowed to fish at all day. The cabin was pretty clean and the AC was cold. The staff is friendly and the sunset lake view is beautiful. Camp Sherwin is pretty close to lots of other fun things to do so our vacation was not a bust, but we are definitely going to look around for a more kid-friendly campground for next year. When you pay as much as we did to stay somewhere, you expect to get what you pay for.
Jul 04, 2024 · Michele GreeneNot recommended for families with children. Camp Sherwin hosts daily childcare groups, prohibiting access to playground, jump pad, bathrooms and public spaces during the daytime. We stayed here with our toddler and unfortunately had to LEAVE the camp to go find facilities elsewhere where she could play.Camp staff are consistently unpleasant and unhelpful. Pool was closed for the entire week of our stay. The bathroom in our cabin was dirty and had visible mold. The shower water temperature would alternate between freezing cold and scalding hot, without warning, making it difficult to shower. I could not allow my toddler to use the shower due to the unpredictability of the water temperature, and instead washed her with a cloth. The bed was uncomfortable and incredibly noisy, making it difficult to get a good night's rest.ONLY positive was the lake access, after taking the 100+ steps down, you did have pretty much exclusive access to the large lakeside shore area. All in all, we were happy to leave at the end of our stay.
Jul 10, 2024 · Allison LOur scout troop camped here for two nights while passing through the Erie area. This was the perfect location for us. Nice mature trees, well-maintained campsites, a pool and access to the lake. Staff were friendly and accommodating. There was a day of torrential (I really mean torrential) rain while we were there and the sites were well drained so that no water pooled in our tents. Highly recommend this campground!
Aug 10, 2024 · Heather MoiseBeautiful, well kept, quiet campground with RV parking, accommodating and clean cabins, tent sites. One side of campground backs up against a spectacular vineyard with great sunsets. Be sure to walk to the lakeside and down long staircase to the beach. Breathtaking viewsHighly recommendWill return
